Daily Kos: Greatest Hits

Some highlights of our big moments over the years.

  • Since Daily Kos launched, numerous distinguished writers and figures have used our platform to write about the issues that matter to them, including: Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, Elizabeth Warren, Jimmy Carter, Nate Silver, Marcy Wheeler, Harry Reid, Bernie Sanders, and more.
  • Since 2013, Daily Kos has raised $43,000,000 for endorsed candidates, allies, and causes; collected 225,000,000+ petition signatures; sent 50,000,000+ letters; made 1,000,000+ phone calls, signed up 250,000+ GOTV volunteers; and driven 100,000+ event RSVPs.
  • In 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a Republican-backed voter ID law that required North Dakota residents to provide documentation of a residential address in order to vote. Native Americans living on reservations often use post office boxes, so this law made it impossible for them to cast ballots. Daily Kos teamed up with North Dakota Native Vote to raise over $500,000 to help fund the organization’s efforts to reach every eligible Native American voter in North Dakota.
  • In 2018, the U.S. government implemented a policy that separated families seeking asylum in the United States, splitting thousands of children from their parents. Daily Kos helped raise over $600,000 for six charities advocating for migrant families and children.
  • When Hurricane Harvey devastated Central America, the Caribbean, and the southeastern United States in 2017, displacing over 30,000 people and inflicting $125 billion in damages, Daily Kos helped raise over $600,000 for 14 charities that were doing work for the storm’s victims.
  • In 2017, Daily Kos Elections raised $1 million for Democratic challengers in the 24 hours following the House Republicans’ vote to repeal Obamacare.
  • Daily Kos drove 2,370,638 actions to encourage the FCC to implement net neutrality through 2016. Daily Kos was cited by the Sunlight Foundation as a top driver of comments to the FCC regarding net neutrality, featuring our ultra-successful “personalize your own message to the FCC” action.
  • In 2015, we founded Daily Kos Liberation League, an email and on-site community that highlights intersections across identities, drives a progressive racial justice narrative, and uplifts marginalized voices.
  • In 2012, as winter loomed, the Daily Kos Community raised thousands of dollars to send heaters and propane to fill tanks on Native American reservations without heat—just one of so many instances showcasing how the Daily Kos Community drives action to support and lift each other up.
  • At the 2008 Democratic National Convention, Daily Kos collaborated with other progressive groups to create the “Big Tent”—a two-story tent with more than 9,000 square feet of work and stage space with necessities like beer, pizza, and WiFi to host bloggers covering the Denver confab.
  • In 2006, Daily Kos readers organized the first Yearly Kos convention in Las Vegas. Here, many Daily Kos community members and bloggers met in person for the first time. In 2007, bloggers moderated a debate among the 2008 primary contenders (including Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama) at the second Yearly Kos convention. This convention took on a life of its own and turned into the largest annual gathering of progressives, now known as Netroots Nation.
  • In May 2002, fed up with Bush and disgusted by the United States’ entrance into the Iraq War, Markos Moulitsas (under his pseudonymous nickname “kos”) founded Daily Kos as a personal blog.
