<title>On This Day in History ... October 21, 1797
The Resistance @ the Village</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2018/10/21/1805892/-On-This-Day-in-History-October-21-1797-The-Resistance-the-Village</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;On this day in history, &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;u&#x3E;October 21, 1797&#x3C;/u&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;, the USS Constitution was launched.&#x200B;&#x200B;&#x200B;&#x200B;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Wait! &#xA0;Before some of you think, &#x201C;Neat. &#xA0;A ship.&#x201D; and read no further, come with me for a minute.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;No hyperbole, this ship speaks to my soul. &#xA0;For those who don&#x2019;t know (or haven&#x2019;t made that wild leap based on my previous diaries), I majored in History with a focus on U.S. Colonial history. &#xA0;Not only is this ship named after our Constitution, but it was named by President George Washington!&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Paul Revere actually created and forged the copper bolts and fastenings that were used on the USS Constitution.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;How cool is that? &#xA0;Paul Revere, who played an integral part of the American Revolution, forged part of the ship that was named after the very document our nation was founded on, named by the very General turned President who won key victories for our independence, that fought in the War of 1812 against the British. &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;There&#x2019;s a quick 6 minute video by &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://military.com&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;u&#x3E;military.com&#x3C;/u&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E; detailing, &#x201C;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://youtu.be/5pxFNWlV1i0&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;u&#x3E;5 Things You Don&#x2019;t Know About: The USS Constitution&#x3C;/u&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x201D; that will (hopefully) intrigue you.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Last week, the USS Constitution celebrated her birthday early in conjunction with the Navy&#x2019;s birthday (October 13th).&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Next time you&#x2019;re in Boston or near Boston (or trying to convince your significant other to take a special trip to Boston *cough*), be sure to visit the &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://ussconstitutionmuseum.org/history/&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;u&#x3E;museum&#x3C;/u&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E; and take a tour of the ship! &#xA0;My guess, you won&#x2019;t be disappointed.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>BREEZE AT SPITHEAD</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/2/1/1274256/-BREEZE-AT-SPITHEAD</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;I don&#x27;t believe 52 year old Vice Admiral John Griffith Colpoys (above) was an excitable man. He had served with honor in the Royal Navy through shot and storm since he was thirteen. But at about three in the afternoon of Sunday May 7, 1797, while floating peacefully at anchor and within sight of friendly shore, he threw a hissy fit. He lost his mind. His meltdown began just an hour earlier, when Edward Griffith, the Captain of the HMS London, who was also Colpoy&#x27;s nephew, entered the Admiral&#x27;s cabin and announced, &#x201C;Sir, I am very sorry to acquaint you, that everything appears as wrong as ever with the fleet...&#x201D; And at that instant, Colpoy&#x27;s stable universe seemed to collapse around him and he went a little nuts.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
