<title>Checking in on Ben Carson</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2017/8/6/1687197/-Checking-in-on-Ben-Carson</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;As we are bombarded daily&#xA0;with news stories,&#xA0;it&#x2019;s hard to keep track of all of&#xA0;the beasts of Satan that now lead our government departments and agencies. &#xA0;Some may be quietly doing more damage than we are aware, so I like to&#xA0;check-in on some of the henchmen, who haven&#x2019;t been front and center in the news,&#xA0;lately.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I started&#xA0;with&#xA0;Ben Carson, the Head of Housing and Urban Development.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Mr. Carson, who originally annouced he wasn&#x2019;t qualified for the job,&#xA0;and&#xA0;is also quoted as saying &#x201C;Poverty, to a large extent is also a state of mind,&#x201D; &#x2026;.&#xA0;is&#xA0;now being attacked by his own party&#x2019;s&#xA0;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;conservatives&#xA0;&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;because he hasn&#x2019;t rolled back the Obama administration policies&#xA0;regarding&#xA0;Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing Rule. &#xA0;This rule was finalized in 2015 and held&#xA0;that, areas&#xA0;receiving block grants must look for patterns of racial bias in local housing and design a plan to rectify the situation.&#xA0;&#xA0;Carson has used the Supreme Court 5-4 decision upholding the validity of claims under the Fair Housing Act, to justifly his position, saying &#xA0;&#x201C;I probably am not going to mess with something the Supreme Court has weighed in on.&#x201D; &#xA0;RWNJ are not pleased.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;However, not all the news is good, as&#xA0;there has been no&#xA0;pushback by Mr. Carson against the&#xA0;6.2 billion dollar cut to the HUD&#xA0;budget, targeting the&#xA0;elimination of block grants to help rehabilitate homes decimated by the 2008 crash. &#xA0;Perhaps, justified&#xA0;by his comment,&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x201C;The other thing to keep in mind is that the traditional view of HUD and government , is we ride in on a white horse with a bucket of money and go off to the next thing. &#xA0;That particular model has led us to the point where we have three to four times as many people in need of affordable housing and it&#x2019;s getting worse.&#x201D;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I have many thoughts about why people &#x201C;need&#x201D;&#xA0;affordable housing, and why it got worse, but I will hold my opinion&#xA0;for now. &#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;On Monday, Aug 7,&#xA0;&#xA0;Mr. Carson will be in East Chicago with Illinois State Representatives&#xA0;to discuss the fate of the lead contaminated West Calumet public housing complex. &#xA0;The complex&#xA0;was ordered closed a year ago. &#xA0; Scott Pruitt has already indicated this is a priority for the EPA as part of the Superfund Sites clean-up program. &#xA0; If it is to be demolished, it will be the first to be so, under the program. &#xA0;Residents in the area are concerned about the effects the demolition and clean-up may have on the surrounding residential area. &#xA0;So far, they have received no answers.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;On Tuesday, Carson heads for Cairo, Illinois to see&#xA0;and hear from residents the effects closing the housing complexes,&#xA0;will have on the community. &#xA0;There is a&#xA0;shortage of affordable housing in the area, for those forced to move. &#xA0;Many fear, this will&#xA0;mean the end of the entire city. &#xA0;Mr. Carson, thus far, has not shown any initiative to remedy their situation but has simply declared the city of Cairo is &#x201C;dying&#x201D;. &#xA0;That&#x2019;s it.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;So, no &#x201C;white horse&#x201D; then? &#xA0;Okay, how about a couple of pack-mules?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;So, Mr. Carson?&#x2026;.&#x201D;&#x3C;em&#x3E;Meh&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x201D;. &#xA0;&#xA0; &#xA0;May we quote you?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p class=&#x22;is-empty-p&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Next up&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Sec. of Agriculture, &#xA0;George Ervin Perdue aka &#x201C;Sonny&#x201D;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p class=&#x22;is-empty-p&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
