<title>Awesome news! Lyft will begin providing free rides for cancer patients to appointments</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2018/6/21/1774146/-Awesome-news-Lyft-will-begin-providing-free-rides-for-cancer-patients-to-appointments</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;If you are desperately seeking good news, this one is for you. Lyft and the American Cancer Society are launching a new program that will give cancer patients&#xA0;free&#xA0;rides to appointments. This is such an amazingly kind use of company resources.&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p style=&#x22;text-align:start&#x22;&#x3E;Patients in need of a car can use the American Cancer Society&#x27;s Road to Recovery program, reports&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#xA0;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://philadelphia.cbslocal.com/2018/06/20/lyft-offering-free-rides-to-cancer-patients-going-to-treatment-appointments/&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;CBS Philadelphia&#x3C;/a&#x3E;. The program contacts Lyft&#x27;s concierge tool, a third-party web request platform, to grant the person a ride to their appointment. The best part? It&#x27;s completely free.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p style=&#x22;text-align:start&#x22;&#x3E;&#x22;Lack of transportation remains one of the biggest roadblocks to receiving high-quality cancer care,&#x22; an&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#xA0;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/2018/06/19/lyft-now-offering-free-rides-cincinnati-cancer-patients/714695002/&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;American Cancer Society spokesperson&#x3C;/a&#x3E; told Cincinnati Enquirer. &#x22;Our expanded partnership with Lyft will help us provide more cancer patients with access to potentially lifesaving treatments.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Fighting cancer is hard enough, but fighting cancer without reliable transportation to all those appointments is an obstacle nobody should face. Even those cancer patients with cars often leave appointments in a fog due to treatments and trauma. Drugs, chemo, painful procedures and/or a form of cancer-related PTSD often put people in a state of numbness, difficulties with concentration. Needless to say, this isn&#x2019;t always the best state to be driving in.&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;So, a big shout out of gratitude to&#xA0;Lyft and the American Cancer Society for partnering on this program.&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;In March, our patient advocacy organizations collectively urged Congress to ensure that any changes made to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) provide affordable, accessible and adequate coverage and do not result in a loss of coverage for any Americans. The AHCA would do the opposite, causing at least 24 million Americans to lose health insurance, according to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;div&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;As introduced, &#x3C;em&#x3E;the bill would profoundly reduce coverage for millions of Americans&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x2014;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;including many low-income and disabled individuals&#x3C;/strong&#x3E; who rely on Medicaid&#x2014;and &#x3C;strong&#x3E;increase out-of-pocket costs &#x3C;em&#x3E;for the sickest and oldest among us&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;. We are alarmed by recent harmful changes to the AHCA, including provisions that will &#x3C;u&#x3E;weaken key consumer protections&#x3C;/u&#x3E;. These changes include allowing states to waive the requirement for essential health benefits, which could deny patients the care and treatment they need to treat their conditions.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>February 19, 1986: America Is Moved by a Voice from the Grave</title>

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;dkimg-c&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;span class=&#x22;image_container&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;img src=&#x22;http://images.dailykos.com/images/130224/large/Yul_Brynner.jpg?1424380160&#x22; alt=&#x22;&#x22; width=&#x22;480&#x22; height=&#x22;360&#x22; /&#x3E;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
On this date in 1986, one of the most powerful public service ads in television history, featuring a beloved stage and screen actor speaking from the grave, was aired for the first time.
&#x3C;p&#x3E;When his lung cancer was diagnosed in June 1983, Yul Brynner, then 63, was one of the world&#x27;s most recognizable and respected actors. Defying his doctors&#x27; orders, Brynner continued to perform despite fatigue from radiation treatments and chemotherapy.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;In January 1985 Brynner went on the ABC television program &#x201C;Good Morning America&#x201D; and discussed his illness. He told of taking up smoking at the age of 12 and how he had smoked as many as five packs a day before quitting in the late 1960&#x27;s. He spoke with passion of his opposition to smoking after discovering it could cause cancer even 15 years after quitting. What he really wanted to do in his remaining time, he declared, was to film a commercial that implored others to quit smoking or never take it up.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;On June 30, 1985, Brynner retired from the stage, giving one final performance of his most famous role as the King of Siam in a revival of &#x22;The King and I&#x22; on Broadway.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;In health in rapid decline, Brynner never made the commercial he wished to make. But shortly after his death on October 12, 1985, officials from the American Cancer Society approached Brynner&#x2019;s widow, Kathy Lee, with a proposal. Actor William Talman, who played the district attorney on &#x27;&#x27;Perry Mason,&#x27;&#x27; had taped taped a spot for the American Cancer Society three weeks before he died of lung cancer in August 1968. What about using the footage from &#x22;Good Morning America,&#x22; the officials suggested, to create a similar public service announcement? Kathy Lee consented.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;The 30-second spot was produced for the American Cancer Society by New York advertising agency McCaffrey &#x26;amp; McCall.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;The announcement, which first aired on ABC-TV on February 19, 1986, is arresting from the start (the actual public service spot can be viewed &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNjunlWUJJI&#x22;&#x3E;here&#x3C;/a&#x3E;). Over a black screen with the inscription &#x22;Yul Brynner 1920-1985,&#x201D; an announcer intones,&#x22;Ladies and gentlemen, the late Yul Brynner.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;What follows is an excerpt from the &#x22;Good Morning America&#x22; interview. Brynner&#x2019;s advice against smoking is followed by his own statement: &#x22;If I could take back that smoking, we wouldn&#x27;t be talking about any cancer. I&#x27;m convinced of that.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x22;Now that I&#x27;m gone,&#x201D; he concludes, looking directly into the camera, &#x201C;I tell you: Don&#x27;t smoke. Whatever you do, just don&#x27;t smoke.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;The spot had a powerful impact on viewers, both smokers and non-smokers. The American Cancer Society was deluged with letters from viewers who said the announcement had moved them to quit smoking. Many told of how their children had seen the spot and implored their parents to quit, or how they&#x27;d convinced their friends or family members to quit. Within months of its debut, the announcement had been shown repeatedly on all three American television networks as well as in Australia, China, Japan and Israel. The International Film and Television Festival of New York awarded the spot a silver medal for achievement in the field of advertising.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Brynner&#x27;s anti-smoking ad ranks among the most striking and memorable efforts ever made to address a public health issue. It maintains its impact today. As a spokeswoman for the American Cancer Society &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.apnewsarchive.com/1985/Cancer-Society-May-Use-Tape-of-Late-Actor/id-9a49a4bf2d7b98388ce143ea2b45741e&#x22;&#x3E;said&#x3C;/a&#x3E;, &#x22;There&#x27;s nothing more forceful than when someone dead looks into the camera and says: &#x27;Don&#x27;t smoke. I did.&#x27;&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Aimee Belgard is Running for Congress in NJ-3</title>

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;dkimg-cap&#x22;&#x3E;Aimee Belgard&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
Congressman Jon Runyan has never had much influence in his two terms in Congress. As a former Philadelphia Eagles football player, he leveraged his popularity across the river in New Jersey&#x2019;s 3rd Congressional District to defeat the late John Adler in 2010 and was re-elected in 2012, defeating Adler&#x2019;s widow, Shelley.
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Although Runyan did not wear the Tea Party mantle, his voting record was not much different than if he had. Realizing the general distaste for Republicans among moderates and independents, the former NFL &#x201C;tough guy&#x201D; has decided to call it quits and not run for re-election.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;NJ-3 is a challenging district for Democrats. Except for Adler, the district has sent Republicans to Congress for decades. But this year is different. Because of the unpopularity of the sequester and government shutdown, many of the so-called &#x201C;safe&#x201D; GOP seats across the country are now up for grabs, and NJ-3 is one of them, especially with the popular Senator Cory Booker at the top of the ticket as he runs for a full term.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Even before Runyan&#x2019;s surprise announcement, Burlington County Freeholder Aimee Belgard started planning to run for that seat. According to a national Democratic congressional campaign staffer I spoke to, Runyan&#x2019;s exit improves the chances for the seat to flip Democratic, and today Belgard kicked off her campaign.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Before announcing, Belgard resigned from her law firm and from her position as a leader of the American Cancer Society in order to devote her full energies to the campaign. Today, she formally kicked off her quest at the historic Alice Paul Institute, the former home of its eponymous early 20th Century feminist and suffragist. Here are Belgard&#x2019;s remarks.&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

Today is 12/12/12, December 12, 2012.&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;12-12-12 is not just a triple date sequence on the calendar, it&#x27;s the last one we&#x27;ll see in our lifetimes.

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x22;That date resonates with &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.wptv.com/dpp/news/local_news/water_cooler/december-12-2012-121212-a-day-full-of-events-with-an-easy-to-remember-date&#x22;&#x3E;the vibration and characteristics of beauty, love, laughter and fun,&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x27;&#x27; said Marcy Heller, a numerologist in Delray Beach . &#x22;Twelve is the energy of creativity, artistic beauty, harmony, celebration.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;The American Cancer Society recommends eating at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day to reduce the risk of many types of cancer. While all plant foods have plenty of health benefits, those that are more colorful have additional nutrients known to decrease the risk of disease. New research finds that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables containing carotenoids can lower the risk of breast cancer in women.&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
Eat some fruits and vegtables and do a self breast exam. Guys you too.

<title>One Last Fundraising Diary (Goal Met! Thank you all!)</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/6/14/1100120/-One-Last-Diary</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;UPDATE: We&#x27;ve met our goal, and the matching donation will be coming tonight! Thank you all for your help! Your support means so much, and rest assured that your donations are going to a wonderful organization. Thanks again for everything!&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;This is the absolute last time I will bother you. Even though it&#x27;s for a good cause, I feel guilty writing so many diaries about the American Cancer Society. See, tomorrow is our Relay for Life, and I have a matching donor. If I raise $750 then I&#x27;ll get a matching $250 donation from a very generous woman.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;As my diary yesterday said, she gave me a deadline of midnight last night. Luckily, I told her I could hit $750 by this evening and she agreed to extend the deadline to 8 p.m. Eastern. Please help me reach my goal and double your impact by donating &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?px=7186120&#x26;amp;fr_id=39840&#x26;amp;pg=personal&#x22;&#x3E;here&#x3C;/a&#x3E;.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Daily Kos, I Owe You Another One (Plus, A Challenge)</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/6/13/1099785/-Daily-Kos-I-Owe-You-Another-One-Plus-A-Challenge</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;As many of you know, every summer I participate in the American Cancer Society&#x27;s Relay for Life. It&#x27;s a great cause that raises lots of money for cancer research and patients, and it also brings the community together for a wonderful event.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;This year, I asked for your donations and you&#x27;ve come through to help me raise $500. I can&#x27;t thank those donors enough for their kindness, and whenever I hear anyone insult the liberal blogosphere, I point them to my fundraising diaries.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Now I want to ask for your help in meeting a final fundraising challenge. I have a &#x3C;strong&#x3E;matching donor who will double anything I raise before midnight&#x3C;/strong&#x3E; tonight (up to $250). Can you help me by donating &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?px=7186120&#x26;amp;fr_id=39840&#x26;amp;pg=personal&#x22;&#x3E;here&#x3C;/a&#x3E;?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;UPDATE, 10:57 P.M.: I only need $95 more to get the full matching donation, with one hour left to donate! Double your impact now!&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Monday Night Cancer Club: On Celebrating (more) Birthdays--and Anniversaries</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/1/23/1057746/-Monday-Night-Cancer-Club-On-Celebrating-more-Birthdays-and-Anniversaries</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;In a simple kind of way, I have a head for numbers. Tell me your birthday and odds are I&#x2019;ll remember it for years to come. (I won&#x2019;t usually remember to send you a card, but that&#x2019;s a different matter.) I remember lock combinations, phone numbers, addresses, passwords&#x2014;most of the time&#x2014;and, along with the birthdays, anniversaries.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;I&#x2019;m old enough at this point to have some crowded anniversary seasons. This stretch, from mid-January to mid-February, is one of them. Some of the dates have generally positive associations: my oldest daughter&#x2019;s birthday last week; my own birthday next week; my dissertation defense and corrections sign-off, to name a few. Others are more ambiguous, such as the anniversary of a former long-term relationship, and yet others are definitely unpleasant, such as the date of my D &#x26;amp; C, the news of my diagnosis, and then the staging surgery itself, which happened eleven months ago yesterday.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;If I&#x2019;m attempting to live more &#x201C;in the moment,&#x201D; which I am, it&#x2019;s likely counter-productive for me to give much energy or attention to these anniversaries, especially the ones with the worst associations. On the other hand, I spent a lot of time in my young adulthood deliberately not thinking about my past experiences, and that was not a useful strategy for me either.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;If I aspire to a greater level of &#x3C;em&#x3E;metta&#x3C;/em&#x3E;, or lovingkindness, directed toward myself, which I do, then I suspect I will be better off adopting a different perspective relative to anniversaries than has been my habit. Usually, I am very mindful of the date&#x2019;s approach (somewhat like the White Queen in &#x3C;em&#x3E;Through the Looking Glass&#x3C;/em&#x3E;, feeling the pain before the occasion for it arrives), but I don&#x2019;t do very much about it except remember and feel miserable. Perhaps the most helpful approach for me to take would be to explore what these events have signified to me, primarily to ask what use they are to me now&#x2014;and then to let them go. We&#x2019;ll see how well that works in the next few days and weeks, as I continue to pass through this heavy season.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Tonight I&#x2019;m interested in knowing: What do you do with your cancer-related anniversaries? Which ones do you note, if any, and what do you do about them? Do you celebrate? Do you mourn? Do you attend to the day or do you ignore it? Is it another kind of birthday for you? Or do I simply ruminate far too much about these arbitrary calendar marks?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;I have another, though I hope related, set of questions to ask you after the jump.&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Welcome to a celebration of the life of Kris Froland, our exmearden, who was taken from us too soon. &#x26;nbsp;She desired no funeral &#x26;#8211; only a celebration in the Spring when her ashes will be sprinkled in the wide outdoors, and this memorial here, in the place on the internet where her voice will always live in her written works &#x26;#8211; and there are no walls to a &#x22;room&#x22; that is as big as we need it to be.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;We gather to share stories and memories and to tell how she touched us, what that means going forward. &#x26;nbsp;Missing Kris, we come here to be with each other.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Dear Fellow Quitter!&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I&#x27;m very tired. &#x26;nbsp;I will write, nevertheless, as I promised.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Why am I tired? &#x26;nbsp;Family illness. &#x26;nbsp;My mother is very ill.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;From smoking.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;

<title>Cancer Sucks</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/5/28/870875/-Cancer-Sucks</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;We all, I think, know someone who&#x27;s been affected by cancer. Maybe even you were diagnosed yourself. Cancer sucks. It took my aunt in April, and I (at 16-years-old) had my own cancer scare. Five years later I still have a tumor in my head that can&#x27;t be operated on, but for now (according to my doctors) it seems to be stable and non-cancerous.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;So for the third (and probably my last) year, I&#x27;m participating in the American Cancer Society&#x27;s Relay for Life. Last year I did the Relay in honor of Senator Ted Kennedy (who was still alive at the time). This year I&#x27;m walking in honor of my aunt. She was the first person in my family that I know of who died from this horrible affliction.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I&#x27;ve asked for your help in the past and you&#x27;ve come through. In my first year you helped me raise over $300. Last year I raised over $200. Since this is my last year I&#x27;d like to raise even more. I&#x27;m setting my goal at $300, but my real goal is to hit $500. I realize that many people are still in tight financial situations, but any amount is more than welcome. If you&#x27;d like to donate, please visit my &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://tinyurl.com/katahdinrelay&#x22;&#x3E;donation page.&#x3C;/a&#x3E; I should add that donations ARE tax deductible.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;You can see some of the things that your money would be spent on below the fold...&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>I still need your help...</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/5/26/870310/-I-still-need-your-help</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;A few days ago I wrote a &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/5/23/869256/-I-need-your-help...&#x22;&#x3E;diary&#x3C;/a&#x3E; asking for help from Kossacks to raise money for the American Cancer Society through their Relay for Life. With your help, I&#x27;ve raised $185 so far, but I&#x27;m still short of my first goal of $300. I know that there are lots of candidates and political causes that are taking your hard-earned money, but if you &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR/RelayForLife/RFLFY10National?px=7186120&#x26;amp;pg=personal&#x26;amp;fr_id=23408&#x22;&#x3E;sponsor me&#x3C;/a&#x3E; then your money will go to things such as:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>I need your help...</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/5/23/869256/-I-need-your-help</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;There have been hundreds of diaries lately, asking for your money to Candidate X or Candidate Y. And Kossacks are always willing to donate to help elect more and better Democrats. But now I&#x27;d like to ask you if you could help me raise money for a different cause: the American Cancer Society.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;For the past two years I&#x27;ve participated in the ACS&#x27;s &#x22;Relay for Life&#x22;, an overnight walkathon that&#x27;s raised millions of dollars since 1986 to help fight cancer. And each year I&#x27;ve asked Kossacks to help me reach my fundraising goal. With your help, I raised over $500 the past two Relays. This year is, unfortunately, the last year I&#x27;ll be participating in Relay for Life and I want to make a statement. I want to double what I&#x27;ve raised in the past two years. So my goal this year is $500. I&#x27;d like to ask for your help once again. I come from a very small, lower-middle class town and I can&#x27;t do it without your generosity.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Instead of just joining a Relay team, I&#x27;ve decided to captain my own team this year in honor of my aunt, who lost her fight to cancer in April.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I have just under a month to reach my goal (the Relay is June 18-19), and I&#x27;m hoping you can help me. Please go to &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://tinyurl.com/katahdinrelay&#x22;&#x3E;my donation page&#x3C;/a&#x3E; to give to this great cause.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Cancer gets a makeover: Chanel and Mary Kay to the rescue!</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/1/15/825439/-Cancer-gets-a-makeover-Chanel-and-Mary-Kay-to-the-rescue</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x22;Hey, Ashley,&#x22; I said to my youngest daughter, &#x22;wanna come keep me company while I get a makeover?&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x22;Sure.&#x22; What a good daughter she is! But this isn&#x27;t just any makeover. This is a makeover sponsored by the American Cancer Society, the Personal Care Products Council Foundation and the National Cosmetology Association -- and its whole goal is to help cancer patients feel good about themselves.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Several years ago, some creepy plastic surgeon told me that I had just a touch of skin cancer on my face and then proceeded to cut off my entire top lip. &#x22;Oh you can&#x27;t even tell that it&#x27;s gone,&#x22; most of my friends said. But I can tell. So when this makeover class was offered I got all excited and pleased. I want one! I want my lip to &#x22;Feel good..Look better!&#x22; like the class brochure says.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>AJ&#x27;s encounter with &#x22;socialized medicine&#x22; Repost</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/8/13/766163/-AJ-s-encounter-with-socialized-medicine-Repost</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I have ben asked to repost this diary. This was very hard for me to post the first time but considering how the debate has evolved/devolved, it might be a good idea to remind some people of what is at stake here. If our experience changes one heart or mind of the decision makers, then it may well be worth it.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I&#x27;ve been listening with great interest the debate concerning health care reform. It is with utter amazement that I listen to some of the rationale of those against reform. Well, I have a little story to relate concerning my encounter with socialized medicine. I have related this story in comments in other diaries. However, I feel that my story is so germane to the debate I decided to try my hand at writing it in a diary. This is my first so be kind.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>I Need Your Help</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/6/18/744228/-I-Need-Your-Help</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;It&#x27;s that time of year again. The American Cancer Society is doing it&#x27;s annual &#x22;Relay for Life&#x22;, a walkathon used to raise money for their organization&#x27;s many pursuits. This is my second year participating in the Relay. Last year, I posted diaries (and was mentioned in Cheers and Jeers) about my fundraising. Kossacks donated over $300 to my fundraising page last year. This year, however, is different...&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;UPDATE 9:48EST: Wow! Thanks to everyone who has donated and/or given their support so far! I&#x27;m only $50 away from my goal of $200! Will I be able to reach that goal tonight?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Today is my Birthday: Here&#x27;s to Many More</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/6/10/740919/-Today-is-my-Birthday-Here-s-to-Many-More</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;As I first learned on Ted Kennedy&#x27;s Presidential campaign in 1980, the cause is everything. Win or lose, be a true believer. &#x26;nbsp;Spend yourself completely. Leave nothing on the table. &#x26;nbsp;It may be tough, but it is what I love to do. And today, I celebrate another year of it.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;For too many years I&#x26;rsquo;ve taken my birthday for granted, dreading this sign of getting older (and yes, I&#x27;m getting older). But birthdays are so much more than an &#x22;over the hill&#x22; Hallmark card. They are a celebration of life. &#x26;nbsp;A chance to reflect and hopefully look back and say, yes, I&#x26;rsquo;ve done something meaningful with my life that made a difference. &#x26;nbsp;And birthdays are also a chance to spend more time with the people we love &#x26;#8211; for me that means more time with my wife and kids.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;So, rather than groaning about aging another year, I&#x26;rsquo;ve decided to do something meaningful to mark this birthday &#x26;#8211; I&#x27;m declaring the American Cancer Society the official sponsor of my birthday.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>UNDERinsured: Have Health Insurance &#x26; Still Screwed (Health Care Thursday)</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/4/17/497165/-UNDERinsured-Have-Health-Insurance-Still-Screwed-Health-Care-Thursday</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Sure we have all heard about the uninsured, the 46+ million and growing... but hey &#x22;I have insurance&#x22; you say, &#x22;so I am okay.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Or maybe not!&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The American Cancer Society has been collecting stories of people with cancer unable to afford care even with insurance, and &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://waysandmeans.house.gov/hearings.asp?formmode=view&#x26;amp;id=6865&#x22;&#x3E;they testified&#x3C;/a&#x3E; to Congress this week:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Much of the public debate today is about the need to cover the 47 million uninsured, and the American Cancer Society fully shares that concern. However, we need to recognize more fully the very significant problem of underinsurance. &#x26;nbsp;Health plans vary enormously in their deductibles, co-pays, benefits covered, and exceptions. &#x26;nbsp;Insurance plans are written in very detailed legalistic language that very few lay people can begin to comprehend, and the summary plan documents that are provided to enrollees almost never begin to convey the adequacy of coverage.
&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Below are stories from Tom, Doreen, Randy &#x26;amp; others...&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Cancer Sucks But You Can Help</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/2/18/458895/-Cancer-Sucks-But-You-Can-Help</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;It&#x26;rsquo;s hardly news to anyone that cancer sucks. &#x26;nbsp;In the course of a lifetime, American men have a slightly less than 1 in 2 risk of developing cancer in their lifetimes. &#x26;nbsp;American women&#x26;rsquo;s lifetime risk is slightly more than 1 in 3. &#x26;nbsp;Given these rates, it&#x26;rsquo;s likely that you or someone you know has already faced a battle with cancer. &#x26;nbsp;If so, you know how devastating this illness can be to individuals and their families. Cancer wreaks havoc on the physical, emotional and financial health of those who must face it. It is also damaging to our communities and to our nation for many reasons, one of which is the premature loss of people who might have contributed greatly to our national history. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Jump over the fold with me to learn areas where greater support is needed and how you can make a difference in what for me, and for many of you, is a very personal issue.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Right wing targeting The American Cancer Society</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/9/24/389339/-Right-wing-targeting-The-American-Cancer-Society</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Deadly serious deja vu here.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Time to go mano a mano with the right wing extremists determined to stick a knife in the back of the &#x3C;strong&#x3E;American Cancer Society&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;First, some critical history about how the right wing killed the Clinton Health Plan in 1993/1994.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;It&#x27;s happening all over again. Today, they&#x27;re targeting the &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.cancer.org/docroot/home/index.asp?level=0&#x22;&#x3E;the American Cancer Society.&#x3C;/a&#x3E; Tomorrow, as sure as day follows night, they&#x27;ll be targeting &#x3C;strong&#x3E;&#x3C;ins&#x3E;all&#x3C;/ins&#x3E;&#x3C;/strong&#x3E; the Democratic healthcare reform plans.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;This carefully orchestrated campaign of lies, deceit, fear, smears, swiftboating and disinformation is being led by the very same people who crushed the 1993 Clinton Reform Plan.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Please keep the name &#x3C;strong&#x3E;Elizabeth McCaughey&#x3C;/strong&#x3E; in mind as you read.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;A new ally has just joined the battle for healthcare reform.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E; &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.cancer.org/docroot/home/index.asp&#x22;&#x3E;The American Cancer Society&#x3C;/a&#x3E; announced today that it will devote its &#x3C;ins&#x3E;entire&#x3C;/ins&#x3E; advertising budget to educating the American people about the collapse of our healthcare system.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Going forward, at least through the 2008 election cycle, you won&#x27;t see the usual American Cancer Society advertising advocating smoking cessation programs, and the importance of screening tests like mammography and colonoscopy. Instead, the esteemed organization will warn the American people of the dire consequences if we fail to repair our broken American healthcare system.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
