Joe Biden takes out massive MSNBC ad buy for his "No Malarkey" tour through Iowa

So, I have been relatively laid up over the past 6 months or so. Had surgery on October 24th to deal with a chronic health issue I have been dealing with for decades. 6 weeks into recovery from surgery, things seem t be going well, I am pretty excited by the results so far. The reality is, it will take a year to know if this is a permanent solution to the problem, but better is better and I will take that either way.

One of the things it has allowed me to do is watch a bit of political coverage in the mornings. Over that time, I know from my deeper interest in politics in general that there are lots of Democratic candidates on various “Tours.”

I bet most of MSNBC viewers have never heard of Bernie Sanders “Worker Appreciation Tour” of New Hampshire he began in the last week or so though.

Elizabeth Warren toured through Georgia Kamala Harris took her For the People campaign on a bus tour through Iowa. Pete Buttigieg did a multi-day Bus Tour through Iowa as well. I doubt MSNBC viewers had any idea those tours occurred though.

Joe Biden, on the other hand, has had at least 8-minute blocks covering his “no malarkey” bus tour on every single show this morning anyway. I also find it interesting that even Joe Biden ignores mentioning Bernie while going after Warren and Buttigieg. I imagine the MSNBC centrist front runner campaign consultants told the Biden campaign that is he mentioned Bernie they would have to report that, and they really would prefer not to be forced into letting their viewers know Bernie still exists.

I mean, no other campaign has had a dedicated day of blocks talking about the launch of one of their various state tours, so Biden s getting a big corporate boost here. Not on the scale of the boost they gave Trump in 2016 for sure, but far more than they do for other Democratic candidates.

Observations & thoughts on the now completed bus tour

of which I was able to see, either in real time or on video, just about all of the events.

The most obvious thing to note is how comfortable Clinton & Kaine are together. That comes across, and helps to connect with the various audiences.

It is obvious both parties recognize the importance of the two states toured, because the two conventions were held therein. For the Republicans, none of their candidates has ever been elected without Ohio, and Pennsylvania has remained elusive for the last 6 elections. From the standpoint of the Democrats, hold both of those states and it becomes very difficult to imagine a path to 270 electoral votes for Trump. In fact, if Clinton were to win those states, lose FL, GA, NC, IA, VA, NH, NV & NM and all other states perform as they did in 2012, you would have a tie.

Let me note several things I observed reasonably consistently at the various events, and offer some thoughts about them.

Sarah Palin selling her tour bus

Sarah Palin has put her tour bus/motor coach up for sale - - - thought you'd like to know.

Here's an story about the sale.(Sorry, it's on Glenn Beck's website - - - Palin, Beck - - - birds of a feather).

I note she's selling it for a measly $279,000.

One of my wife's cousins is a VERY successful small businessman. He bought one of these about eight years ago, cost him around $650,000. He just traded in the old one for a new one -- $825,000. Here's a review of the beast.

Of course, it's no loss to Sarah - - - she bought the bus with campaign donations and that's likely how she's paying for the new down-sized one.

May I now go puke??

Read this one for a less-than-favorable commentary on Sarah, tour bus, Todd . . .

No Matter What, You Cannot Unfeel the Healthcare Pain in California

By Donna Smith, National Nurses United

It hurts. The stories hurt. The aching, pounding, insistent sounds of Californians telling the nurses where it hurts. This is what the Medicare for all for life bus tour is all about in California. And just as you cannot unring a bell, there is no way you can unfeel the pain people share as they demand change.

In Bakersfield last week, we heard about an 87-year old man who is extracting his own teeth because he was worried about the cost. He developed serious jaw problems, and only told his family when the pain became unbearable. They took him to the dentist, and they struggled to find a way to cover the $300 for each visit he needed to relieve his pain.

Sarah Palin disses Illinois State Fair

Sarah Palin's bus sneaked in and out Springfield, Illinois before I knew she was here. Apparently, she only stayed long enough to visit the Lincoln Presidential Museum, two blocks from the Old State Capitol building where Obama announced his campaign for President.

Just a few days ago Palin claimed she took her bus tour to the Iowa State Fair during the Republican straw poll, while all the national press happened to be there, to celebrate the historic importance of state fairs. She even said, "I love this all-American venue. I consider the Iowa State Fair very historical."

OK, that's cool. And since she's in Springfield today it makes sense that she would also stop by the Illinois State Fair that's happening here right now. But no! She totally skipped the Illinois State Fair!

What, our state fair isn't historical enough for you, Sarah Palin? But, the fair grounds are listed on the National Register of Historic Places! Springfield held the first one in 1853! Iowa has nothing on the Illinois fair! Our butter cow is just as good as theirs!

She gets to Illinois and all of a sudden she doesn't care about "historic" state fairs anymore. Whatever.

If you're really interested in the historical significance of state fairs, unlike Sarah Palin, check out the Illinois State Fair Museum Foundation.

A Tina Fey bus tour would put Palin's in perspective

Where is Tina Fey when we need her? This question sprang to mind when I saw a Washington Post story about Sarah Palin's latest publicity stunt:

...Unless Palin decides to formally explore a possible presidential run, she is free to spend the money raised by SarahPAC for “any lawful purpose” under federal law, experts said. That means it doesn’t matter whether the trip is a holiday, a political event or something in between...

Traveling in a brightly decorated bus — which is labeled “Paid for by SARAHPAC” — Palin kicked off the “One Nation Tour” Sunday with an appearance at the Rolling Thunder motorcycle rally on the Mall. Stops since then have included Mount Vernon in Virginia, the Gettysburg Civil War battlefield in Pennsylvania and the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor...

Reporters are being kept at bay throughout much of the trip, with even lodging details kept secret.

Palin Bus Fueled By PAC Donations

There are a lot of people who don’t like politicians. Or they say they don’t like them, since it seems that a lot of the population of our nation don’t actually know any politicians in a meaningful way. I grew up around them, so the idea of hating them seems a little bit like self loathing. Still there are times when the actions of high profile pols stain everyone in the business of government with a black mark.

That is where we are in regards to Sarah Palin. As trashy and unselfconscious as she is I don’t have problems with her being controversial to get more attention. That is part of the nature of politics, but this bus tour of hers is going to be one of those times where people see on politician doing something really distasteful and put it on the all of them.

You Sister Sarah is on vacation and her Political Action Committee are paying for it. That’s right all the bills for the bus, the driver, food and anything else is being footed by not by the Palin’s but by the donors who hope that she will run or support candidates or some such.

Just to rub salt in the wound, it is all completely legal. You see SaraPAC is what is called a “unconnected PAC” which means while it is a still a political action committee it is not associated with a campaign and does not have the restrictions on what it can spend money on. If the erstwhile half-term Governor wants to buy out the gift shop at the Statue of Liberty, then she can do it on the SarahPAC credit card.

The Old Redneck can't help but think Sarah Palin's "bus tour" is another phony grandstand play by the Wasilla Grifter. After all, she pulled the same stunt a couple of years ago.

Walker's Imperial Union-BUSting Tour - Update

I can't forget the look of disappointment on the faces of the elderly couple who asked us if we knew where Governor Walker was speaking. Trying to avoid saying anything cruel, I told them the Governor had higher priorities than speaking to people like us today. They had come, along with literally a few people to the Wausau stop in the second big day of Americans For Prosperity's "Stand Against Spending. Stand With Walker" bus tour of Wisconsin.

My journey with the tour, as protestor and (polite) provocateur, began early this morning at the Perkins Restaurant in Green Bay, with no expectations of actually catching a glimpse of Wisconsin's embattled Chief Executive.

We're Winning, Keep Fighting - My Three Days With AFSCME in LA & AR

I've spent the last few days after Netroots Nation with AFSCME's Highway to Health Care bus tour which is going to cross about 10 states in the month of August. What I've seen is pretty inspiring. During that time I've met a lot of Americans who've come out for rallies, concerts or who happen to walk by press events with elected officials talk about their desire for a public option and health insurance reform. In that time I've met very few people who oppose the public option, and no one that comes to mind who wasn't part of a local tea party group organized to disrupt the tour. And I was just on the bus for three days for the Arkansas and Louisiana legs of the tour.

Recommend QuickSilver's Diary & Help Stop Prop 8

Over an hour ago QuickSilver published an important diary about the "The Hate Talk Express". What's that? "The Hate Talk Express" is the pro prop 8 forces' statewide media bus tour scheduled to criss cross California beginning this coming Monday, October 20th in Sacramento California. The purpose of the tour is to influence Californians to vote for the odious Proposition 8. The diary has already fallen into DKos oblivion, but you can rescue it by recommending it.

The bus will visit Sacramento, Chico, Oakland, Modesto, Los Angeles, El Centro, Indio, and La Mesa, with another seven destinations yet to be announced.

— QuickSilver

Please recommend QuickSilver's diary so that folks will see the bus tour schedule. I hope DKosers will save the dates and plan to turn out in force.

Here's the inside scoop from the California "Yes on 8" campaign: a statewide bus tour next week to promote their discriminatory agenda.

They're driving the bus to Sacramento, Chico, Oakland, Modesto, Los Angeles, El Centro, Indio, and La Mesa, with another seven destinations yet to be announced.

They asked to spread the word, so I'm doing my part. Confirmed dates below...

News Unfiltered Digest: "Just More of the Same" website released by DNC, Dean's Bus Tour Continues

There are some items up on News Unfiltered that may interest the community.

DNC releases a new, compelling website on John McCain's More of the Same:

On the heels of President Bush passing the torch to the one candidate who has consistently promised more of the same failed Bush policies, the Democratic National Committee today launched a new website called http://www.JustMoreOfTheSame.com. The website features web videos and research on John McCain's support for the Bush agenda and his promise of more of the same, including McCain bragging about voting for the Bush agenda more than 90 percent of the time and noting that he agrees with President Bush on the transcendent issues of the day. The site also shows President Bush returning the favor, saying he'll do whatever it takes to help John McCain win and calling him the best candidate to "carry forth his agenda." Even President Bush knows that John McCain wouldn't change Bush's economic policies.

Obama needs to do a bus tour through Appalachia!

I know that many folks on this site may disagree with my suggestion in this diary, but I have to say it! As an ardent Obama supporter, about the only thing that I have been dissapointed with the Senator with during this campaign has been the fact he has not really made that much of an effort to reach out to Appalachia. Visiting Kentucky and West Virginia once or twice in the run up to each state's repspective primaries doesn't quite cut it in my opinion. This has to change between now and the general election, and here is why.

More below the fold.

NJ-07:Mike Ferguson's drive-by appearance *with pics and poll*

We had a little friendly competition with the opposition today. We found out Mike Ferguson's bus tour schedule and made sure we were there to welcome him in person. Karen Gaffney, our local DFA person and Township Committee candidate, got her a posse, er, welcoming committee to meet him at a local Hillsborough shopping center. We were so anxious to show our, um, support (for Linda, of course). We were a little afraid that the Republicans would shame us with greater numbers.

Well not to fear, Kossacks.
Here is the Republican contingent. All two of them:

And here was the Democratic response:
Trouble the Water Part III: A Closer Look at Gulfport

This is Part III of a series written by activist Mayaba Liebenthal and sponsored by The Opportunity Agenda. You can read Parts I and II here.

Today Diana and I took a break from the bus tour, so far it has been back-to-back community meetings and tours and listening sessions. We decided to take a day and have more in depth conversations with some of the women and families we met in Gulfport yesterday.

We first stopped to meet Freddie and Bobbie Nelson. We took the road along the shore, turned right, and their home was two houses in; their house is one street and three bushes away from the gulf. This home exudes hope, new sheet rock, and some new appliances, signs of regularity that are refreshing. They are fortunate to not have had to elevate their home; someone decided that they only had 49% damage. Bobbie walks with a cane, and so with the "49%" decision she is spared from having to go down and up nine feet of stairs every time she leaves the house.

Trouble the Water: Recovery and Resistance in New Orleans Part I

The Opportunity Agenda invited New Orleans writer and activist Mayaba Liebenthal to create a daily travelogue as she participates in this week's Gulf region "Hear Me Now listening tour" hosted by the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation.

From August 23 to 30, Mayaba will be riding a bus from city to city - from New Orleans to Mobile, AL, Gulfport and Moss Point, MI, Lafayette and Baton Rouge, LA, talking with communities of color as they rebuild their lives and communities. In this travelogue, she shares her thoughts and observations.

We boarded the bus in New Orleans early this morning and officially began our travels. I'm here with New York videographer Diana Nikkah, gathering stories and footage for an upcoming "Women of Katrina" documentary, being produced by The Opportunity Agenda, DeepDish TV, and several New Orleans filmmakers.
