<title>Daily KOS Cincinnati Meeting</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2017/3/4/1640220/-Daily-KOS-Cincinnati-Meeting</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;A bunch of folks who read DAILY&#xA0;KOS got together today in Cincinnati to discuss how to get our messages to our elected officials. &#xA0; The meeting was led by Rachel Colyer, Senior Campaign Director of DAILY KOS. &#xA0;David Akadjian&#xA0;spoke as well. &#xA0;It was wonderful to gather with a bunch of likeminded people. &#xA0;We did meet&#xA0;in the basement of an old pub in Over-the-Rhein, so it felt a bit like we were the resistance plotting against Hitler. &#xA0;Hell, maybe that&#x2019;s exactly what we were doing.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Late Night Thoughts: Framing</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2016/11/27/1604705/-Late-Night-Thoughts-Framing</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I am doing my best to follow the advice of some posters that I respect that we need to move forward and come up with plans for what we are going to do in the next four years.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;The Little Book of Revolution: A Distributive Strategy for Democracy&#x3C;/strong&#x3E; by David Akadjian is a useful place to start.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-little-book-of-revolution-david-akadjian/1120386704?ean=9780692220344&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;www.barnesandnoble.com/...&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Overview&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x2026; For all practical purposes, the government of the United States no longer acts in the interests of the people of our country.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Is the situation hopeless?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;No. But the game has tilted heavily in favor of money and corporate interests.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;How do we shift the direction of change in the face of this tremendous money disadvantage? The answer, I believe, lies in our strengths: our numbers, our values, and our story.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Trying to do it all at once, however, can appear daunting and even overwhelming.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The question I hear most often is: What can I do?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;This book focuses on this very basic question. It examines our options and describes several simple and practical steps that, if taken by enough people, create a system for change---a way to make the seemingly impossible task of restoring democracy possible.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;David sent me his book as a gift and it is easy to read in the format he uses.&#xA0; I have sticky notes all through it to review, now.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Pg. 194&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;I want to emphasize here that your end goal is trust and you should never say or do something you don&#x2019;t believe to pursue an ulterior motive.&#xA0; You will not be authentic and it will come back to haunt you.&#xA0; You want people to trust you and you want to be able to trust them.&#xA0; The way to do that is to be honest about your beliefs.&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;It&#x2019;s the same when you talk about values-authenticity is the difference between framing and spin.&#xA0; Framing is an honest expression of your beliefs, spin uses language to achieve a hidden agenda.&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;He has had several front page diaries that you might like to review if you missed them.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;David&#x2019;s page with his list of diaries is here:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/user/David%20Akadjian&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;www.dailykos.com/...&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Most people also think of George Lakoff&#x2019;s book &#x3C;strong&#x3E;Don&#x2019;t Think of an Elephant&#x3C;/strong&#x3E; when it comes to understanding the idea of framing ideas so people can hear them.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;George is easy to listen to so here are some videos and there are more on the page at YouTube.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;George Lakoff: Don&#x27;t Think of an Elephant&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;remove-embed-content&#x22;&#x3E;x&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;a class=&#x22;iframe_placeholder youtube dk-embed&#x22; href=&#x22;//youtube.com/watch?v=n4UfGZOPJjE&#x22; data-src=&#x22;//www.youtube.com/embed/n4UfGZOPJjE&#x22; data-width=&#x22;500&#x22; data-height=&#x22;281&#x22;&#x3E;YouTube Video&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#xA0;.&#x2026;&#x2026;..&#x2026;&#x2026;..&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Idea Framing, Metaphors, and Your Brain - George Lakoff&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;dk-editor-embed embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9 center-block&#x22;&#x3E;
&#x3C;div class=&#x22;remove-embed-content&#x22;&#x3E;x&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;a class=&#x22;iframe_placeholder youtube dk-embed&#x22; href=&#x22;//youtube.com/watch?v=S&#x22; data-src=&#x22;//www.youtube.com/embed/S_CWBjyIERY&#x22; data-width=&#x22;500&#x22; data-height=&#x22;281&#x22;&#x3E;YouTube Video&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#xA0;&#x2026;&#x2026;&#x2026;&#x2026;&#x2026;&#x2026;..&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I used to frame things for my night school students all the time.&#xA0; I used to tell them that education was a dangerous thing because they loved taking risks. (I know the real quotation is &#x201C;A little knowledge is a dangerous thing&#x201D; by Alexander Pope).&#xA0; I explained that it did change us and that was a good thing.&#xA0; My idea was not to deny thoughts that some of their parents and neighbors used to discredit school, but to acknowledge it and proclaim it as being good, and to bring it out in the light to talk about it.&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;So, now, I am thinking of things that I want to frame.&#xA0; I need some easy bumper sticker thoughts to share.&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
