<title>This is What Needed to be Said: Representative Joe Neal&#x27;s Impassioned Speech to SC Assembly</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/7/9/1400850/-This-is-What-Needed-to-be-Said-Representative-Joe-Neal-s-Impassioned-Speech-to-SC-Assembly</link>
<description>
&#x3C;div class=&#x22;dkimg-r&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;span class=&#x22;image_container&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;img src=&#x22;http://images.dailykos.com/images/153127/small/SC_Rep_Joe_Neal.JPG?1436475178&#x22; alt=&#x22;&#x22; width=&#x22;250&#x22; height=&#x22;224&#x22; /&#x3E;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;
&#x3C;div class=&#x22;dkimg-cap&#x22;&#x3E;Rep Joe Neal (D) said what needed to be said.&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
It was a long day; a Wednesday that spilled into the early hours of Thursday, a day fraught with emotion that shattered the distinctions between the parties and drew new lines of conflict. On one side were bipartisans who wanted the Confederate flag down and out forever. On the other side were Republicans clinging to decrepit lies that no more hid the ugliness of the past than tattered netting.
&#x3C;p&#x3E;A simple, straight-forward bill to remove the flag from government grounds, passed the Senate 36 to 3. It was their final vote for the current session. They adjourned and went home. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;The bill then moved to the Assembly.&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
It should have been an easy bill to pass but this is South Carolina so it was anything but easy.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;The situation was this: in order for the flag to be taken down before the scheduled KKK rally on July 18, they had to pass a clean bill (no amendments) with a two-thirds majority. If the bill was amended in any way then action would be delayed, possibly for months. Those for the bill wanted it passed cleanly and without delay. Sounds reasonable to us, but...&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Those against the bill blockaded the vote with 68 amendments. As if that wasn&#x2019;t enough opposition, there were those who claimed they&#x2019;d been threatened with violence if the flag was removed. (SC Police are investigating.) Some Reps whined that they needed &#x201C;to take home something for their people&#x201D; meaning an amendment for those people who wanted to keep the flag. Some asked for &#x201C;grace&#x201D; on behalf of the Confederate soldiers.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;The debate dragged on and on with every hour weighed down by more and more amendments. Some were withdrawn; most were voted down, but then more would appear. It seemed endless. After some seven or eight hours of debate, Republican Rep Jenny Horne addressed the naysayers and time-wasters in her party. Her emotional speech has been &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/07/09/1400610/-Rep-Jenny-Horne-I-Have-Heard-Enough&#x22;&#x3E;diaried here&#x3C;/a&#x3E; and &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/07/09/1400692/-SC-Rep-Jenny-Horne-s-statement-on-the-confederate-flag&#x22;&#x3E;here&#x3C;/a&#x3E; and &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/07/09/1400655/-Must-see-speech-from-Rep-Jenny-Horne-descendant-of-Jefferson-Davis-on-the-Confederate-Flag&#x22;&#x3E;here&#x3C;/a&#x3E;. Its sincerity was arresting, not least because it was delivered by a Republican, but it wasn&#x27;t what most needed to be said. That defining moment came more than two hours later.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Charleston and SC&#x27;s Battle Flag: Are they connected?</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/6/21/1395261/-Charleston-and-SC-s-Battle-Flag-Are-they-connected</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a rel=&#x22;lightbox&#x22; href=&#x22;http://images.dailykos.com/images/149627/lightbox/GettyImages_via_PBS_online_Not_My_Flag_photo.jpg?1434917072&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;span class=&#x22;image_container&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;img src=&#x22;http://images.dailykos.com/images/149627/large/GettyImages_via_PBS_online_Not_My_Flag_photo.jpg?1434917072&#x22; alt=&#x22;South Carolina rally in Columbia: &#x26;amp;nbsp;Not My Flag!&#x22; width=&#x22;550&#x22; height=&#x22;379&#x22; /&#x3E;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;My short answer is &#x22;yes.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;But the larger picture and longer answer is more complicated and nuanced. &#x26;nbsp;We all, and particularly us Southern white folks, need to take the time to reflect on South Carolina&#x27;s long history of racial hatred and the influence of that hatred in the state&#x27;s political regimes, past and present.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;As the state&#x27;s NAACP President said during a special presentation on &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.wistv.com/story/29367465/latest-on-church-shooting-funeral-set-for-sen-pinckney&#x22;&#x3E;WIS TV&#x3C;/a&#x3E; last night, &#x22;it is sad that SC is first only in secession.&#x22; &#x26;nbsp;And no one has mentioned the influence of Sen. Strom Thurmond, &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dixiecrat&#x22;&#x3E;Dixiecrat candidate&#x3C;/a&#x3E; for US President. &#x26;nbsp;Thurmond represented South Carolina in the United States Senate from 1954 until 2003, at first as a Democrat and, after 1964, as a Republican.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;I just saw the first evidence of backlash against Charleston&#x27;s and SC&#x27;s leaders online, as there was graffiti scrawled on a &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.postandcourier.com/article/20150621/PC16/150629854/1005/confederate-statue-at-the-battery-defaced-by-graffiti&#x22;&#x3E;Confederate statue&#x3C;/a&#x3E; in downtown Charleston. &#x26;nbsp;A statue near The Battery memorializing Confederate defenders of the city was found vandalized Sunday with the message &#x201C;Black lives matter.&#x201D; It named both Mayor Joe Riley and &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/06/18/nikki-haley-charleston-shooting_n_7612398.html&#x22;&#x3E;Governor Nikki Haley&#x3C;/a&#x3E; in red paint.&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>ALEC - Hidden Memberships EXPOSED!</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/6/26/1103251/-ALEC-Hidden-Memberships-EXPOSED</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;This diary is a sneak preview of an article to be published at Voters Legislative Transparency Project - www.vltp.net - later this week...&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Over the past year, much information about the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) has come to light. &#x26;nbsp;The public learned of ALEC; model legislation, secret membership lists and denial of media access to ALEC events and meetings. &#x26;nbsp;A complete website dedicated to exposing &#x201C;everything ALEC&#x201D; has been created helping to inform about ALEC.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Daily Kos and VLTP Researchers have been continuously digging through thousands of pages of FOIA&#x2019;s, articles and documents. These efforts have revealed some important facts involving ALEC.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;In addition to the standard Legislative and Corporate memberships, ALEC offers several additional &#x201C;types&#x201D; of membership; Legacy, Full and Subscription memberships. &#x26;nbsp;Some individuals previously thought of as ALEC &#x201C;alumni&#x201D; are in fact important but undisclosed card carrying members &#x2013;foreign lawmakers may also hold such memberships.&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
