Founded in 2002, during a fit of Patriot-Actism, I can only imagine, the bi-monthly magazine covers all the opinions you would imagine a magazine started by Pat Buchanan would. Earlier Thursday, whoever was manning the social media posted a new article from the magazine positing that by calling Donald Trump “alt right” his critics were “empowering Real Racists.” The article was written by Jack Hunter—someone who worked for Rand Paul—who has written similar screeds with headlines like “What if Russiagate is the New WMDs?” and “Rand Paul Against the World.” If you want something to warm your heart you can read an article by him titled “Our Newfound Sympathy for Addicts,” or “Why Conservatives Ignored the Ferguson Report.” The American Conservative social media outlet sent out this tweet.</p> <div class="dk-editor-embed center-block" data-twitter-content='&lt;blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"&gt;&lt;p lang="en" dir="ltr"&gt;There are people with far, far more offensive racial views than Donald Trump or Tucker Carlson. I basically found one (above), which is from <a href="http://goodmenproject.com/tag/duke/" target="_blank">Duke's "Good Men" project</a> from 2014. Granted there was one bumper sticker that simply said “Political Correctness” and nothing else, but since it was from a right wing site, I suspect it was actually anti-PC; it just wasn’t very clear. I am also not including redneck jokes, which one or two places seemed to find a form of PC speech. Part of the difficulty is that so many of these jokes are actually generated within the redneck community, although there is resentment when outsiders use them, which forms an odd parallel to the use of the n-word in certain subsets of the African American community.</p> <p> In contrast to this one ad, there are literally hundred of Anti-PC and “Politically Incorrect” images. Virtually no one (with the exception above) is reaching out to the public with Pro-PC messages. This was borne out by a brief survey of books on Amazon. I employed the words “Political Correctness” in the search field for “Books,” then I tried to analyze which were pro or anti-PC I came up with the following (out of 108 results, which were the first nine pages of results):</p> <p> Pro-PC: 1 (maybe 2)</p> <p> Anti-PC: 53</p> <p> Books on the debate (both sides): 3</p> <p> Histories or speculations on the future of PC: 6</p> <p> Not relevant (novels, or just not about PC) 45</p> <p>The one unequivocally Pro-PC book in those nine pages of results was John Wilson’s <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Myth-Political-Correctness-Conservative-Education-ebook/dp/B00HG1LBRM/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1460834106&sr=1-1&keywords=myth+political+correctness" target="_blank">The Myth of Political Correctness</a></em>. Another one I might be able to add is Verna A. Myers, <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/What-Say-Wrong-Thing-Culturally-ebook/dp/B00NYCE44O/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1460834211&sr=1-1&keywords=myers+what+if+I+say" target="_blank">What If I Say the Wrong Thing</a>: 25 Habits for Culturally Effective</em> <em>People </em>(it was #108), although this is more of a how to book than about PC as such. If anything I have probably underestimated the number of Anti-PC books, simply because I ignored a few books that had no obvious bias, but were probably Anti-PC (for example a collection of Charles Krautzhammer’s essays—I have little doubt at least one of those essays could be characterized as Anti-PC).</p> <p>If Political Correctness adherents are all about suppressing speech, they certainly are doing a lousy job. In fact, what both these admittedly casual, subjective surveys seem to demonstrate is how easily Anti-PC speech can be commodified and turned into a profit. At least one book (which I admittedly have not read), seems to pick up this idea and make it explicit, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/How-Make-Money-Online-Correctness-ebook/dp/B0120OZ47W" target="_blank">Jack Hunter's How to Make Money Online</a><em>: Use and Abuse of Political Correctness (for Fun and Profit)</em>, which has the following description on Amazon:</p> <blockquote> <p><span>If you ever tried to make money online then you know that the biggest problem is always how to get traffic. This book tackles subject of traffic from a unique perspective. In it you will also find numerous suggestions as to how to monetize niches you perhaps never even thought of monetizing. Political correctness is boring and not very profitable. Be a rebel. Think different. Be cool. Make money, get unprecedented amounts of traffic and be politically incorrect. And above all, have fun doing it.</span></p> </blockquote> <p>Hunter has learned (possibly by doing what I just did), that Anti-PC is cool, rebellious, and sells. He also advocated against Hispanic immigration and in favor of white pride, warning that a “non-white majority America would simply cease to be America.”</p> </blockquote> Hunter (thankfully, not our Hunter!) carries with him a treasure trove of extremist statements, and it's pretty clear that The Free Beacon hopes that Paul's decision to hire him will define Paul's campaign before Paul gets a chance to define himself. The question I have is whether being branded as a conservative who tolerates neo-Confederate racism will be an asset or liability.
