<title>A Wealthy Nation Is A Working Nation</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/9/20/903451/-A-Wealthy-Nation-Is-A-Working-Nation</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Timothy Noah, a writer for Slate.com, has produced an extensive series on the income gap in the United States. According to his research, wealth inequality has been growing at a rather alarming rate. As he reported, in 1973, one percent of the population held 8 percent of the nation&#x26;rsquo;s income. &#x26;nbsp;Today, the richest 1 percent account for 24 percent of the nation&#x26;rsquo;s income.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Jane Dyer, a candidate in the Third Congressional District race, introduced a plan Wednesday to help identify &#x26;nbsp;military veterans and make sure they receive benefits and support they have earned.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Jane Dyer: Make Back to School Work for ALL Children</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/9/9/900519/-Jane-Dyer-Make-Back-to-School-Work-for-ALL-Children</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Today more than ever, we must focus on educating all South Carolina children. Our economic future depends on having a well-educated work force.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Providing a quality education requires shared responsibilities ... and the shared goal of educating ALL our children.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Investing in Infrastructure Creates Jobs Now... And For Long Term</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/9/7/899839/-Investing-in-Infrastructure-Creates-Jobs-Now-And-For-Long-Term</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I was reading Robert Reich&#x26;#8217;s thoughtful column this morning and was struck by this sentence:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x26;#8220;In the late 1970s, the richest 1 percent of American families took in about 9 percent of the nation&#x26;#8217;s total income; by 2007, the top 1 percent took in 23.5 percent of total income.&#x26;#8221;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Let me repeat: &#x26;nbsp;Only 1 percent receive almost a quarter of U.S. income.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;How does this income imbalance affect South Carolina working families?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Fripp Island</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/6/24/878992/-Fripp-Island</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Over the years as I was growing up, my family spent many wonderful weeks at Fripp Island. &#x26;nbsp;We watched it develop from an uninhabited island to one of the great treasures of our coastline. Its clean beauty never failed to mesmerize me.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;As I see the devastating effects of the BP Gulf oil disaster, I cringe at the possibility of tar balls rolling up on the shores of our beautiful beaches. &#x26;nbsp; &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>When You Are On Your Own ...</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/6/18/877371/-When-You-Are-On-Your-Own</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;This past week, as a FedEx pilot based in Memphis, I experienced the difficulty of being &#x22;on my own.&#x22; Once again.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;My 1995 Saturn&#x26;rsquo;s air conditioner broke down, and it is HOT in Memphis in June. I&#x26;rsquo;m flying at night from Laredo, TX, back to Memphis. From Laredo, I call ahead to see if the repair shop could take my car that next morning.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;My plan: &#x26;nbsp;I would land at midnight in Memphis and leave on my next flight that afternoon. I had from early that morning to 1:00 pm for my car to be fixed.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>The Military Shows Us The Importance of Teamwork</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/5/31/871576/-The-Military-Shows-Us-The-Importance-of-Teamwork</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;This nation needs to pull together. On this Memorial Day, we need to consider the power of teamwork represented by our military veterans&#x26;rsquo; efforts to keep us safe.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I learned this firsthand. I am veteran from a family of veterans. I served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force. My husband, John, is highly decorated Vietnam War pilot. My stepson has served three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan as an A10 pilot. My father served in World War II, as did an aunt and uncle. Another uncle served in Korea.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>College Graduation From A Mom&#x26;rsquo;s Perspective...</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/5/10/865312/-College-Graduation-From-A-Mom-rsquo-s-Perspective</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;As my husband John, my son Tony and I sat in the audience at the College of Charleston today, I started reliving some of my son Bill&#x26;rsquo;s school days -- the announcement of the 5th Grade Science Award, the years of his academic achievement, and his amazing artistic accomplishments.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Of course, those were interspersed with a few episodes of not turning homework in, not answering all the questions on an exam, and an occasional exclamation of how irrelevant the material is to real life.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/4/8/854602/-SC-republican-applauds-HCR-bill-in-writing-to-constitutent</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I can&#x27;t believe South Carolina&#x27;s U.S. House of Representative Gresham Barrett sent a letter to a local constituent, writing of the positive aspects of H.R. 3590, Patient Protection &#x26;amp; Affordable Care Act. &#x26;nbsp;I&#x27;ve seen it with my own eyes! After his introductory remark of &#x22;thank you for contacting me&#x22;, the letter continues with -
&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;As you know, one of the most pressing problems in health care is the large number of uninsured and underinsured Americans, 700,000 of which are located in South Carolina. I understand that you support health care reform legislation that will provide insurance coverage to all Americans.
&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E; I should note that Gresham Barrett is currently running for South Carolina Governor. &#x26;nbsp;His House seat is open, with republican and Democratic primaries in June. &#x26;nbsp;The letter follows with a long paragraph giving factual information about the health care reform bill. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Afghanistan.</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/2/16/837730/-Afghanistan</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Recently, while I was in the midst of my workday routine (flying, sleeping, eating), I received an email from my stepson who is serving his second tour in Afghanistan. I was solemnly reminded of the high cost of war.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;My stepson described the procedure when the soldiers are notified of the loss of their fellow servicemen.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;At the airfield, the coffins of the fallen are moved across the tarmac to the aircraft that will carry their bodies&#x26;rsquo; home.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The date and time of this procession along the flight line are posted. &#x26;nbsp;Hundreds of service men and women line the path as they pay their final respects to our brave heroes.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;As we carry on our everyday lives, let&#x26;rsquo;s not forget our brave men and women fighting on our behalf. &#x26;nbsp;Let&#x26;rsquo;s remember those that have fallen -- the high price they paid, the personal loss to the families, and their commitment to our freedom and security. &#x26;nbsp;It is the very least we can do.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x22; One small step for man, one giant step for mankind.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E; &#x3C;p&#x3E;That statement by Astronaut Neil Armstrong as he became the first human on the moon signified the culmination of an entire decade of American scientific commitment.&#x3C;/p&#x3E; &#x3C;p&#x3E;Where is our commitment today? &#x26;nbsp;What kind of large scientific goal are we pursuing?&#x3C;/p&#x3E; &#x3C;p&#x3E;Actually, there is none. &#x26;nbsp;In fact, our lack of excitement toward science and technology is dragging us down in world competition.&#x3C;/p&#x3E; &#x3C;p&#x3E;Asia is booming ahead of us with South Korea leading the way in Research and Development.&#x3C;/p&#x3E; &#x3C;p&#x3E;The following is from the National Science Foundation:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Over the past decade, R&#x26;amp;D intensity--how much of a country&#x27;s economic activity or gross domestic product is expended on R&#x26;amp;D--has grown considerably in Asia, while remaining steady in the U.S. Annual growth of R&#x26;amp;D expenditures in the U.S. averaged 5 to 6 percent while in Asia, it has skyrocketed. In some Asian countries, R&#x26;amp;D growth rate is two, three, even four, times that of the U.S.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;

<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/1/20/827873/--SC-03-Jane-Dyer-Announces-for-3rd-Congressional-District-Seat</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;January 20, 2010, &#x26;nbsp;Easley, SC &#x26;#8211; Jane Dyer announced today that she is running for the open 3rd District Congressional seat. Dyer is a Democrat from Easley. This is her second campaign for the post.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Dyer is running because the 3rd District needs leadership, committed to economic recovery.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x22;While the rest of the United States is slowly pulling out of this awful recession,&#x22; Dyer commented, &#x22;South Carolina continues to suffer with growing unemployment numbers.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;The attack on Pearl Harbor ignited the soul of the United States. &#x26;nbsp;That spark inspired hundreds of thousands to join the military, and millions to labor back home in support. All Americans sacrificed. &#x26;nbsp;Because of our American spirit, the flame that became the US war machine succeeded in guaranteeing our freedom during those dark days.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Putting People Back To Work Must Be Our Priority</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/12/1/809805/-Putting-People-Back-To-Work-Must-Be-Our-Priority</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;With this week&#x26;rsquo;s White House Jobs&#x26;rsquo; Summit, the government&#x26;rsquo;s priority moves to where it should be: Putting people back to work. &#x26;nbsp;We face tremendous challenges with so many people losing their jobs, losing their homes, and going hungry.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E; &#x3C;ul&#x3E;&#x3C;li&#x3E;According to Associated Press, South Carolina&#x26;rsquo;s unemployment is a record 12.1%.&#x3C;/li&#x3E;&#x3C;li&#x3E;The number of South Carolinians losing their homes is increasing. &#x26;nbsp;&#x22;One out of every 268 homes in the Palmetto State was listed as being in distress,&#x22; according to the Columbia Regional Business Report.&#x3C;/li&#x3E;&#x3C;li&#x3E;The most startling new finding is the number of Americans who are actually going hungry. &#x26;nbsp;A recent front-page story in the Philadelphia Inquirer reports US Department of Agriculture numbers that &#x22;America is hungry and getting hungrier, with 49 million people - 17 million of them children - last year unable to consistently get enough food to eat.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;With one in six of households experiencing hunger, the South has the highest numbers in the country. &#x22;Experts attributed the harsh statistics to the recent recession and to an American poverty that has persisted despite economic growth earlier in the decade.&#x22; &#x26;nbsp;

<title>[SC-03] Savannah River Site Fuels Third District Economy</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/11/18/805857/--SC-03-Savannah-River-Site-Fuels-Third-District-Economy</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;During the Cold War, I sat on Alert as I flew the KC-135 aircraft, the flying gas station that enabled nuclear-laden B-52s to make it to their targets. Many may not remember, but the B-52s were constantly armed so the US could respond within minutes to ensure mutual destruction should we be attacked by the Soviet Union.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Back then, the Savannah River Site (SRS) played an instrumental role in developing high-energy nuclear material needed for those weapons.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Nuclear power was important then, and it&#x27;s important now, especially in the Third District.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>[SC-03] Veterans Deserve Our Best</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/11/10/803147/--SC-03-Veterans-Deserve-Our-Best</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;One of my favorite traditions of the U.S. military is the lowering of the flag at 5:00 pm on all our bases. &#x26;nbsp;Patriotic music is played; military personnel stop where they are, salute and stand at attention with pride as the flag of the United States of America is slowly lowered, folded and retired until the next day.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;As a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, I was one of those proud, young officers who participated in this ceremony. It was an honor to pause and remember ... as it is today for us all to pause and remember.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Honoring our veterans involves more than special ceremonies. It obliges us to remember that they need our support during and after their service. Regrettably, meeting the needs of our veterans tends to happen only when Congress is prodded to action.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Sad to say, our leaders do not always show the care and concern needed to help those who gave so much.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Focus On...SOUTH CAROLINA!!! (#37 in a 50-diary series)</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/9/8/591152/-Focus-On-SOUTH-CAROLINA-37-in-a-50-diary-series</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E; Every State. Every race. Right here.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;This is number 37 in a planned series of 50 entries between now and November, looking at each of the 50 states in terms of every race on that state&#x27;s ticket--Presidential, Gubernatorial, Senate, House, State legislatures--the whole BBQ plate! Special attention paid to identifying and promoting the most important contests per state.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;It&#x27;s back to Dixie for us today, for a look at the Palmetto State: South Carolina!&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>[SC-03] No Soldier Left Behind</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/8/6/563852/--SC-03-No-Soldier-Left-Behind</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;South Carolina, more than some states of the union, has a cherished tradition of strongly honoring the men and women who put their lives on the line to defend this country. &#x26;nbsp;That tradition was born in the revolution and continues today in Iraq and Afghanistan. &#x26;nbsp;We honor our military and we make sure they are treated when they come home with the best of care and offered educational opportunities.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;So why, given that long unbroken tradition, do we find that Representative Barrett has other ideas about honoring our Vets? &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;a target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; href=&#x22;http://www.StandUpForVets.org&#x22;&#x3E;StandUpForVets.org&#x3C;/a&#x3E; has recorded his voting record. &#x26;nbsp;You can find it. &#x26;nbsp;Go to their site and you will discover that this so-called Representative of the People has &#x3C;a target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; href=&#x22;http://capwiz.com/dav/bio/keyvotes/?id=7965&#x26;amp;lvl=C&#x26;amp;azip=29860&#x26;amp;bzip=&#x22;&#x3E;voted against the interest of South Carolina Vets&#x3C;/a&#x3E; in almost 60% of the votes he has cast on Veterans issues in Congress. <title>[SC-03] Bush/Barrett at it again!</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/7/23/555514/--SC-03-Bush-Barrett-at-it-again</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Many of us in SC are ecstatic that Bush/Barrett were overridden on the Medicare Bill. &#x26;nbsp;Finally, their efforts to reward insurance company&#x26;rsquo;s profits at the cost of American citizens have been thwarted.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;According to the Los Angeles Times (&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.latimes.com/features/health/medicine/la-na-medicare16-2008jul16,0,7928843.story&#x22;&#x3E;link&#x3C;/a&#x3E;),
&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E; &#x26;nbsp; &#x26;nbsp;Bush issued the veto in the morning, declaring the bill &#x22;objectionable&#x22; because it would take funds from private health insurers to keep paying doctors and would be &#x22;fiscally irresponsible.&#x22;
&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Seniors have been faced with more and more doctors not accepting Medicare patients and what do our elected officials do? &#x26;nbsp;They want to cut payments to doctors by over 10%. &#x26;nbsp;Do they have any idea how tough it is for Medicare patients to find a doctor as it is?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;One of the most distressing parts of their attempts is that this bill also provides for mental health and other health services to veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom living in rural areas. &#x26;nbsp;Our elected officials opposed this effort to take care of our veterans.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;more after the jump...&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>[SC-03] Even though it may look that way, we are not all stupid in SC</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/7/16/552682/--SC-03-Even-though-it-may-look-that-way-we-are-not-all-stupid-in-SC</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Many people in SC are beginning to wake up and realize that we are in a train wreck (or &#x22;in a spin&#x22; for you pilots) with no one at the controls.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The latest publicity for our governor would suggest that South Carolinians just aren&#x26;rsquo;t very bright.
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;object width=&#x22;425&#x22; height=&#x22;344&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;param value=&#x22;http://www.youtube.com/v/ryPQJr1i9J8&#x26;amp;hl=en&#x26;amp;fs=1&#x22; name=&#x22;movie&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/param&#x3E;&#x3C;param value=&#x22;true&#x22; name=&#x22;allowFullScreen&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/param&#x3E;&#x3C;embed width=&#x22;425&#x22; allowfullscreen=&#x22;true&#x22; src=&#x22;http://www.youtube.com/v/ryPQJr1i9J8&#x26;amp;hl=en&#x26;amp;fs=1&#x22; type=&#x22;application/x-shockwave-flash&#x22; height=&#x22;344&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/embed&#x3E;&#x3C;/object&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The reality is that just like the rest of America, many of us in SC are fed up with skyrocketing gas prices, the mortgage crisis, the health care crisis, and looming bank uncertainty.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;In a time that we are paying $4.00 or more for gas, food prices are skyrocketing, and we are praying that our children don&#x26;rsquo;t get sick because we just cannot afford the smallest of doctor&#x26;rsquo;s bills, what are we to do?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Does it matter who we vote for?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;In my part of South Carolina, it does matter. We can make a difference.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Brand new in the world of politics, I believe whole-heartedly that America can deal with any problem, under one condition: We must all pull together and find solutions NOW!&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I have had the opportunity to serve as a pilot in the US Air Force, am now an airline captain, have two step-children, two sons and two grandchildren, and am married to a great guy. A product of my district and believer in the American Dream for all Americans, I have stepped forward to serve the people of the &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.janedyerforcongress.com&#x22;&#x3E;Third Congressional District in South Carolina&#x3C;/a&#x3E;.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
