<title>First Person: When People Rocked K.L. City, Authorities Claimed their Shame</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/7/11/993475/-First-Person-When-People-Rocked-K-L-City-Authorities-Claimed-their-Shame</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;By Jacelyn Johnson, Edited by Jim Luce&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;The Bersih 2.0 Rally&#x3C;/strong&#x3E; &#x2013; also called the Walk for Democracy &#x2013; was a demonstration in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia held on July 9, 2011 as a follow-up to the 2007 Bersih rally. &#x26;nbsp;The rally, organized by the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (&#x3C;em&#x3E;&#x201C;Bersih&#x201D;&#x3C;/em&#x3E;), was supported by the coalition of the three largest opposition parties in Malaysia, but was deemed illegal by the government. &#x26;nbsp;Bersih forces were pushing to ensure free and fair elections. &#x26;nbsp;The police vowed to stop any rallies from taking place on the planned date on the grounds that all public gatherings without police permits are illegal. &#x26;nbsp;They rallied anyway. &#x26;nbsp;The government officially estimates that 6,000 people attended. &#x26;nbsp; Independent assessments put the rally numbers at between 10,000 to over 20,000, while Bersih 2.0 claims a turnout of 50,000. &#x26;nbsp;Police arrested more than 1,660 protestors. &#x26;nbsp;&#x2013; &#x3C;em&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bersih_2.0_rally&#x22;&#x3E;Wikipedia&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;I started the day of July 9 wondering what &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://bersih.org/&#x22;&#x3E;Bersih 2.0&#x3C;/a&#x3E; would actually achieve. &#x26;nbsp; I supported the cause because I really wanted democracy to prevail. &#x26;nbsp;As a taxpayer and a voter, I wanted to have my say and I wanted my vote to be rightfully counted. &#x26;nbsp;People around me questioned the point of the rally, they mocked Bersih organizers, mocked Bersih supporters, mocked the government, mocked PDRM, mocked UMNO, and of course there were some well-deserved mocking for &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ibrahim_Ali_%28Malaysia%29&#x22;&#x3E;Ibrahim Ali&#x3C;/a&#x3E;, president of PERKASA (a Malay rights movement), but they were all comfortable within the confines of their own home. &#x26;nbsp;Many even cursed &#x201C;those Bersih people&#x201D; for the unnecessary roadblocks and shutting down the entire city.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Finding Nirvana in New York City: Delicious Restaurant with a Heart</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/11/28/808699/-Finding-Nirvana-in-New-York-City-Delicious-Restaurant-with-a-Heart</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;By John Lee, edited by Jim Luce. &#x26;nbsp;Photos by John Lee.&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.flickr.com/photos/oiww/4141138050/&#x22; title=&#x22;Fresh Sri Lankan shrimp were cooked to perfection by jimluce, on Flickr&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;img width=&#x22;500&#x22; alt=&#x22;Fresh Sri Lankan shrimp were cooked to perfection&#x22; src=&#x22;http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2629/4141138050_c4222d0ba7.jpg&#x22; height=&#x22;250&#x22; /&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Recently I met up with Creole singer Mayer Morissette, Maggie Metayer, and Jim Luce to dine at &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.nirvanany.com/menu.asp&#x22;&#x3E;Nirvana&#x3C;/a&#x3E;, on Lexington Avenue between 39th and 40th Streets. &#x26;nbsp;What a treat on a cool autumn night!&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Upon arrival, we were ushered upstairs to the main dining room by the friendly &#x3C;em&#x3E;ma&#x26;#238;tre d&#x26;rsquo;.&#x3C;/em&#x3E; &#x26;nbsp;Zarina Ahmed runs the first floor with grace and efficiency.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The ambiance is warm and inviting. &#x26;nbsp;Cozy, dimly-lit, with exposed brick and an elegant red rose and candle, fine china and elegant glassware on crisp white table linen in a fine dining setting.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Travel Abroad: Then and Now</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/11/8/657870/-Travel-Abroad-Then-and-Now</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I just received an upbeat colorful portrait of a Nov 4, &#x27;08 election-day overseas snapshot from a friend who is traveling in Kuala Lumpur, and Bangkok -- the same places I travelled five years ago. The differences in the way people responded to our &#x22;American-ness&#x22; is striking. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Who Got Water Boarded and Why: What Tortured CIA Detainees Had In Common.</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/12/17/423196/-Who-Got-Water-Boarded-and-Why-What-Tortured-CIA-Detainees-Had-In-Common</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;The ongoing controversy over the destruction of CIA torture tapes raises several more unanswered questions. &#x26;nbsp;The answers call into question the very basis of the Bush Administration&#x26;rsquo;s so-called Global War on Terrorism.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;These are questions about selection. Who and why, and why not others?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Why were four particular &#x22;high-value&#x22; detainees water boarded? &#x26;nbsp;But, why weren&#x26;rsquo;t the other 11 who were subjected to &#x22;enhanced interrogation techniques&#x22;, and why were these 15 tortured out of the nearly 100 prisoners the CIA acknowledges it has held in secret custody around the world? &#x26;nbsp;What characteristics or experiences do they have in common?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;MORE below . . .&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
