<title>International Elections Digest: After stunning election, British prime minister hangs by a thread</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2017/6/11/1670734/-International-Elections-Digest-After-stunning-election-British-prime-minister-hangs-by-a-thread</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;The Daily Kos International Elections Digest is compiled by Stephen Wolf and David Beard, with additional contributions from James Lambert, Daniel Nichanian, Daniel Donner, and Julia van Hoogstraten, and is edited by David Nir.&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;h4&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Leading Off&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;/h4&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;#1&#x22; name=&#x22;1&#x22;&#x3E;&#x25CF;&#x3C;/a&#x3E; &#x3C;strong&#x3E;United Kingdom&#x2014;&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom_general_election,_2017&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;parliament&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E; (June 8)&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;In one of the most astounding political miscalculations in modern electoral history, &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conservative_Party_(UK)&#x22;&#x3E;Tory&#x3C;/a&#x3E; Prime Minister Theresa May is now only barely hanging onto office in the aftermath of a snap election she herself insisted on calling in April. Despite having a small majority in Parliament that could have lasted three more years, May ordered early elections be held, hoping to capitalize on the Conservative Party&#x27;s then-massive polling leads and her opponent&#x27;s supposed unpopularity.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;May had hoped a new, larger majority would allow her to handle the United Kingdom&#x27;s exit from the European Union (aka &#x22;Brexit&#x22;) as she saw fit and also enable her to pass other controversial policy proposals. Instead, she lost her majority and will have to rely on an alliance with a small troublesome party from Northern Ireland for the Tories to remain in power. May herself will trudge on as a dead woman walking, waiting for the inevitable day that her party comes and lets her know it&#x27;s time to go.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Meanwhile, &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labour_Party_(UK)&#x22;&#x3E;Labour&#x3C;/a&#x3E; leader Jeremy Corbyn has been vindicated as few politicians ever have been. After winning two leadership elections in the face of overwhelming opposition from fellow members of Parliament (MPs) in his own party, Corbyn ran the general election his way and won more votes than any Labour leader since Tony Blair in 1997. Labour ran an aggressive but positive campaign focused on left-wing economic issues and was rewarded across England, Wales and Scotland. While Corbyn&#x27;s party did not win the election, he decisively won the civil war within Labour and will be able to continue on as leader until the next election, which is now set for 2022.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
