<title>SC lawmaker proposes law requiring a waiting period and counseling for Viagra prescription</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2016/4/25/1519793/-SC-lawmaker-proposes-law-requiring-a-waiting-period-and-counseling-for-Viagra-prescription</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Of course this bill would never pass a male-dominated legislature, but the &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.cbsnews.com/news/viagra-waiting-period-south-carolina-proposed-abortion-rules/&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;you have to love it anyway:&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;A South Carolina lawmaker is proposing that men who want to get Viagra or other drugs to help them have sex wait for 24 hours and get a sworn statement from their sexual partners detailing their problems.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Rep. Mia McLeod says her bill is a tongue-in-cheek response to all of the rules South Carolina&#x27;s male-dominated Legislature places on abortion&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Fair is fair, right? Oh, and the bill would require counseling:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;McLeod&#x27;s bill would require a 24-hour waiting period before an erectile dysfunction medicine could be picked up from the pharmacy and require patients to get counseling on celibacy as a valid life choice.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;

<title>Want Viagra? Fill out these forms. Oh, and you&#x27;ll need counseling ... and more counseling ...</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2016/1/8/1466673/-Want-Viagra-Fill-out-these-forms-Oh-and-you-ll-need-counseling-and-more-counseling</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Democratic South Carolina Rep. Mia McLeod&#xA0;has a straightforward idea. Take the restrictions her conservative colleagues have imposed on the state&#x27;s women in regards to abortion, and apply them to the menfolks. &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://rhrealitycheck.org/article/2016/01/05/south-carolina-bill-targets-viagra-get-people-talking-anti-choice-laws/&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;Specifically, to Viagra other erectile dysfunction&#xA0;medications&#x3C;/a&#x3E;.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;&#x201C;Oh, I don&#x2019;t think it&#x2019;ll pass,&#x201D; McLeod told South Carolina&#x2019;s NBC affiliate, WCBD. &#x201C;I really just want to broaden the discussion and get people thinking about and talking about some of the issues that women face who are seeking legal abortion services in this state.&#x201D; [...]
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Among the bill&#x2019;s many proposed regulations are a 24-hour waiting period for men seeking ED medication. A patient would also have to submit a notarized affidavit from a sexual partner affirming he has experienced symptoms of ED in the past 90 days.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x201C;I personally find it to be quite amusing,&#x201D; Carey told RH Reality Check.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/want-viagra-s-c-bill-would-make-men-go-through-n480741&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;Other requirements&#x3C;/a&#x3E; include an evaluation by a state-licensed therapist for &#x22;psychological conditions&#x22; and mandatory counseling sessions &#x22;for patients to pursue celibacy as a viable lifestyle choice.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;But no ultrasounds? It seems like a mandatory ultrasound would be, let&#x27;s face it, an obvious first step. And possibly a second and third step as well. Honestly, you want to make sure the menfolk know what&#x27;s going on there before they do something so radical as taking a little blue pill.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;We&#x27;ve had a few of these and they never seem to make it to the point where other colleagues will jump on and give the bill the ol&#x27; college try. I don&#x27;t see why not. If we&#x27;ve already established that the state can mandate medically unnecessary or medically damaging procedures in order to make a supposed moral point, then there&#x27;s no actual reason why you couldn&#x27;t do the same for any other condition. Unwanted pregnancies, deadbeat fathers, unwed mothers&#x2014;think of all the very good reasons the state has to make sure men aren&#x27;t having sex when they shouldn&#x27;t be having sex.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;We&#x2019;ve also established that states are free to require doctors to give their patients false medical information, so we should probably add in a requirement that menfolk are told that taking Viagra has a fifty-fifty chance of giving them, let&#x2019;s say&#xA0;elbow cancer.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Honestly, at this point I think we should be considering&#xA0;mandatory ultrasounds for all state legislators, period. When someone is elected to state&#xA0;office, we should start giving them mandatory ultrasounds on a weekly basis. It&#x27;s the only way to be sure sekrit terrorists haven&#x27;t squirreled themselves away in a legislator&#x27;s lower intestine, waiting to unleash sharia upon us all.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
