<title>RIP Michelle Caudle</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/9/5/1013717/-RIP-Michelle-Caudle</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://s169.photobucket.com/albums/u237/kimowahn/?action=view&#x26;amp;current=IMG_0969.jpg&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;img src=&#x22;http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u237/kimowahn/IMG_0969.jpg&#x22; border=&#x22;0&#x22; alt=&#x22;Photobucket&#x22; /&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;em&#x3E;Michelle Caudle&#x27;s quilt, &#x22;Flowers for Michelle&#x22;&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;One of our early community quilts was done for Michelle Caudle. &#x26;nbsp;Michelle was not a member of the Daily Kos community but her story touched the hearts of many Daily Kos readers. &#x26;nbsp;You may remember it -- her husband joined the Army in order to keep Michelle in cancer treatment even though that meant he would be separated from her for long periods. &#x26;nbsp;It was a &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.jsonline.com/news/wisconsin/64677772.html&#x22;&#x3E;story that put a tragic and very real human face on the dysfunction of our health care &#x22;system&#x22;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;, poignantly told by journalist Mark Johnson. &#x26;nbsp;We answered with a quilt filled with messages of love and support, something &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/11/25/808180/-Michelle-Caudles-Quilt-From-Daily-Kos-Community&#x22;&#x3E;that touched Michelle Caudle very deeply&#x3C;/a&#x3E;, even though we were strangers to her.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;It is with deep sadness that I relay the news that Michelle Caudle lost her battle with ovarian cancer on Friday. &#x26;nbsp;Mark Johnson &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.jsonline.com/news/obituaries/129173268.html&#x22;&#x3E;wrote a beautiful obituary&#x3C;/a&#x3E;. &#x26;nbsp;Here is a small piece of it, focusing on the positive effect Michelle&#x27;s story had on awareness of warning signs of ovarian cancer:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Kossacks Did a Good Thing - Journal Sentinel Update on Michelle Caudle </title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/12/27/819632/-Kossacks-Did-a-Good-Thing-Journal-Sentinel-Update-on-Michelle-Caudle</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;The Daily Kos community was deeply affected by the story of &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.jsonline.com/news/wisconsin/64677772.html&#x22;&#x3E;Michelle Caudle&#x3C;/a&#x3E; when it broke. &#x26;nbsp;You may recall that Mrs. Caudle&#x26;#8217;s husband joined the Army to keep his wife&#x26;#8217;s cancer treatments going. &#x26;nbsp;His decision was a torment because Army service took Bill Caudle from his wife&#x26;#8217;s side when she was so sick &#x26;#8211; but not to serve with the Army would have left her without health care. &#x26;nbsp;The bitter twist of necessary absence made the Caudle&#x26;#8217;s story seem like &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gift_of_the_Magi&#x22;&#x3E;it had been written by O. Henry&#x3C;/a&#x3E;.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E; You will also recall that we, as a community, did something in response.. &#x26;nbsp;A number of Kossacks commissioned a message quilt for Michelle Caudle, as well, &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/11/25/808180/-Michelle-Caudles-Quilt-From-Daily-Kos-Community&#x22;&#x3E;and we know it was received with grateful tears on a particularly hard day&#x3C;/a&#x3E;.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Michelle Caudle&#x26;#8217;s Quilt From Daily Kos Community</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/11/25/808180/-Michelle-Caudle-8217-s-Quilt-From-Daily-Kos-Community</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; href=&#x22;http://s169.photobucket.com/albums/u237/kimowahn/?action=view&#x26;amp;current=IMG_0969.jpg&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;img alt=&#x22;Photobucket&#x22; src=&#x22;http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u237/kimowahn/IMG_0969.jpg&#x22; border /&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;As part of an ongoing series of message-bearing community quilts, a quilt was commissioned for &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.jsonline.com/news/wisconsin/64677772.html&#x22;&#x3E;Michelle Caudle&#x3C;/a&#x3E; &#x26;#8211; the woman whose husband joined the Army in order to keep her cancer treatments going.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I sent the quilt (titled, &#x26;#8220;Flowers for Michelle&#x26;#8221;) to the reporter who broke her story, Mark Johnson. &#x26;nbsp;As many of you contributed messages for the quilt and to its cost, I thought you would want to know that I just received an email from Mr. Johnson. &#x26;nbsp; And here it is:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Community Quilt Update Diary</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/11/2/799869/-Community-Quilt-Update-Diary</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;This community has kindly commissioned some quilts. &#x26;nbsp;This is an update diary to let you all know where each of them stands.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The quilt for &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/10/20/795281/-Community-Quilt-for-Michelle-CaudleAction-Diary&#x22;&#x3E;Michelle Caudle&#x3C;/a&#x3E; is done. &#x26;nbsp;I&#x26;#8217;ve been in contact with the reporter who broke the story about her and will send the quilt to him to deliver.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Here is the quilt, &#x26;#8220;Flowers for Michelle&#x26;#8221;:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Community Quilt for Michelle Caudle &#x26;#8211; Action Diary</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/10/20/795281/-Community-Quilt-for-Michelle-Caudle-8211-Action-Diary</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;UPDATE: Call for messages is closed on this quilt. &#x26;nbsp;Thank you all!&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/user/Sara%20R&#x22;&#x3E;Last night I posted a diary about the quilts the Kossack community has commissioned&#x3C;/a&#x3E; for valued members. &#x26;nbsp;Three quilt projects were proposed &#x26;#8211; the first of which I am writing about tonight.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;We will make a quilt bearing messages of support with wishes for healing for &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.jsonline.com/news/wisconsin/64677772.html&#x22;&#x3E;Michelle Caudle who is fighting ovarian cancer&#x3C;/a&#x3E; (I&#x27;ll sew it -- you provide the messages). &#x26;nbsp;In order to maintain coverage for the care and treatment she needs, her husband, who was recently laid off, joined the Army for a four-year period of service. &#x26;nbsp;It&#x26;#8217;s an awful predicament for her because, in addition to facing a third round of chemo and caring for their kids, by necessity her husband will be hundreds of miles away. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Man joins Army to pay for wife&#x27;s cancer treatment</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/10/19/794933/-Man-joins-Army-to-pay-for-wife-s-cancer-treatment</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Maybe John Boehner can ask his opinion on government-run health insurance?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.jsonline.com/news/wisconsin/64677772.html&#x22;&#x3E;From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:&#x3C;/a&#x3E;
&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;In March, he was laid off from his job as a raw materials coordinator for a plastics company called PolyOne, where he&#x27;d worked for 20 years. His severance package had provided several months&#x27; salary, but by August the paychecks were winding down. Soon the cost of his family health coverage was going to triple, then a few months after that, nearly triple again. They needed coverage so Mom could fight her cancer.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Dad&#x27;s solution: a four-year hitch in the Army.
&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;More excerpts below. &#x26;nbsp;This seems like a perfect example of what is wrong with our health care system. &#x26;nbsp;In order to save his wife, he had to enlist.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
