<title>Closing your bank account?</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/10/16/1026921/-Closing-your-bank-account</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;I have seen that November 5th has been designated as the day to close out accounts at the big banks. &#x26;nbsp;I used to work for a couple banks and have some suggestions on how to do this.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;1 - Open a new account at whatever community bank or credit union you have chosen.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;2 - If you have automatic deposits or bill payments, make arrangements to transfer them to the new account. &#x26;nbsp;Your employer may need a couple weeks to get the change processed.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;3 - Once your new account is established, check your balance on the old account, make allowances for any monthly fees the bank charges, and withdraw from an ATM (or write another check to the new account) whatever is left. &#x26;nbsp;If you are unsure about the amount of the fees, leave less than $50 in the account.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;4 - This is where YMMV. &#x26;nbsp;One bank I worked for would close out your account over the phone if the balance was less than $50, and mail you a check. &#x26;nbsp;Your bank may require you come into a branch to do so. &#x26;nbsp;When I closed out a personal account at one bank, I scheduled bill payments that brought my balance to 0, then called and closed out the account over the phone. Either way, you can still aim to do this on November 5th.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;I hope this helps you make a smooth transition to a new bank or credit union. &#x26;nbsp;Plan on choosing your new financial institution this week so you can be on schedule.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;We are the 99%&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>London is agog</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/11/3/651524/-London-is-agog</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E; I&#x27;ve never known so much excitement about a US election. Senator Barack Obama is already an inspiration to people throughout Europe. Black students at the University where I teach, soccer fans on a message board I visit, strangers on the street wearing Obama buttons and baseball caps - I have never felt an American election impinge on our consciousness in the way that this one has. The whole world is looking to the New World tomorrow, looking for leadership in the current crisis, looking for a moral centre that puts ordinary people and their needs at the heart of the hard decisions that we will face over the coming years.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Because the movement that you have created and the leadership that Senator Obama has shown has put the US at the centre of the radical movement again. &#x26;nbsp;We need your community activism, we need your energy. Most of all we need your hope.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Nov. 5th: Pre-emptive Retort to Republicans</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/10/31/647460/-Nov-5th-Pre-emptive-Retort-to-Republicans</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;If Barack Obama wins the election, one foregone response from some McCain supporters will be that Obama only won because of a tidal wave of black support. &#x26;nbsp;Their argument will be that elections are supposed to be based on the collective will of the people, but that this year one subset of the population had undue influence and distorted what would have been a collective will with an otherwise distinctly conservative bent. &#x26;nbsp;They will say that this is unjust and undemocratic, and there will be great gnashing of teeth. &#x26;nbsp;No one can doubt that such teeth will be gnashed; the only question is to what extent they will be gnashed by the &#x22;mainstream&#x22; of Hannity, Limbaugh, Fox, and the like. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
