<title>The latest in media sucking up: AP mounts a spirited defense of presidential nepotism</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2017/4/26/1656399/-The-latest-in-media-sucking-up-The-AP-mounts-a-spirited-defense-of-presidential-nepotism</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;The Associated Press offers up &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://apnews.com/bc8b6d510d354caa92d5326237e25f48/Plenty-of-presidencies-have-been-family-affairs?utm_campaign=SocialFlow&#x26;amp;utm_source=Twitter&#x26;amp;utm_medium=AP_Politics&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;a pathetic defense&#x3C;/a&#x3E; of Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner&#x2019;s roles in Daddy&#x2019;s White House: Nepotism was historically common. The examples offered of the 18 sons and 14 daughters or daughters-in-law who helped presidential fathers:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Martha Johnson, daughter of Andrew Johnson, lobbied members of Congress for appropriations and helped set protocols still used at the White House. Webb Hayes, son of Rutherford Hayes, &#x22;virtually ran the White House for his father,&#x22; says Wead. John Eisenhower was a trusted adviser and protector of his father, Dwight Eisenhower. Anna Roosevelt went to Yalta to help with her father&#x27;s meeting with Joseph Stalin and Winston Churchill, Wead says.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Why, if you go back 65 years, you can find a clear example of a president&#x2019;s child serving as an aide. Although John Eisenhower, at the time an experienced Army officer, was not&#xA0;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/story/2017/04/05/1649882/-Joint-Chiefs-invite-Jared-Kushner-to-Iraq-because-Ivanka-s-husband-is-in-charge-of-everything-now&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;tasked with&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#xA0;his time&#x2019;s equivalents to reaching peace in the Middle East, restructuring the federal government, and solving the opioid crisis. But still, if Rutherford Hayes&#x2014;another popular vote loser!&#x2014;had his&#xA0;son virtually run the White House, then Donald Trump is&#xA0;&#x3C;em&#x3E;clearly&#xA0;&#x3C;/em&#x3E;on solid ground 140 years later. I don&#x2019;t know why we&#x2019;re even talking about the fact that the White House is now being virtually run by someone&#xA0;whose qualification is that he is a real estate heir who married a real estate heiress and hawker of branded products and sucked up to his father-in-law. Or the fact that the president&#x2019;s daughter&#xA0;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/story/2017/04/18/1653994/-Ivanka-Trump-s-company-granted-new-Chinese-trademarks-on-the-same-day-she-dined-with-President-Xi&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;got approval for Chinese trademarks the same day she had dinner with the Chinese president&#x3C;/a&#x3E;. Seriously, though. Why would we talk about this when Martha Johnson did stuff?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;This is a surprisingly short section at the moment, given the subject.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Other Presidents with Funny Names</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/12/12/672342/-Other-Presidents-with-Funny-Names</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Throughout the past 12 months, our President-Elect&#x27;s name has been the subject of silly and pointless controversy by both the mainstream media and the right-wing attack machine.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;His first name rhymes with &#x22;Iraq,&#x22; and he decided to go by that instead of Barry, his Anglicized childhood nickname. &#x26;nbsp;His middle name is the same as that of the fallen Iraqi dictator. &#x26;nbsp;His last name rhymes with Osama.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;How controversial! &#x26;nbsp;How foreign! &#x26;nbsp;How terribly un-American!&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Earlier this week, Barack Hussein Obama II announced that he would be sworn in as President using his full name, including his middle name of Hussein, on Inauguration Day.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;And guess what? &#x26;nbsp;Not a peep of outrage from the media.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Obama frequently joked throughout the primary campaign that in no other country but the United States could a &#x22;skinny kid with a funny name&#x22; grow up to become President. &#x26;nbsp;But our next President is not the only Commander-in-Chief in our nation&#x27;s history to have, for lack of a better term, a funny name. &#x26;nbsp;The &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.babynamewizard.com/voyager&#x22;&#x3E;Baby Name Wizard&#x3C;/a&#x3E; has some shocking new evidence that might surprise you!&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Here are the others, in alphabetical order:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>The Most Corrupt Presidents ...Ever!</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/3/28/316908/-The-Most-Corrupt-Presidents-Ever</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Here&#x27;s the second of several polls on the worst presidents ever.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Yesterday&#x27;s &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2007/3/27/14956/9687&#x22;&#x3E;poll&#x3C;/a&#x3E; covered the most incompetent presidents. And Buchanan edged out Hoover and Harding. Today&#x27;s poll covers the most corrupt. These are presidents who were personally rotten to the core or who presided over administrations that were rotten to the core. I exclude the current occupant because this is one poll he would surely max out and it wouldn&#x27;t be fair to the all of the other presidential malfeasors.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The rules are simple: pick a president from the list below or choose your own. Tell us why. No presidents after 1980 can be considered. Future polls will consider the most evil presidents and the ones who screwed things up the worst.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
