<title>Charter Schools&#x27; Dismal Failures</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/9/27/1425442/-Charter-Schools-Dismal-Failures</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Today, the Center for Media and Democracy is releasing a complete state-by-state list of the failed charter schools since 2000. Among other things, this data reveals that millions and millions of federal tax dollars went to &#x201C;ghost&#x201D; schools that never even opened to students. The exact amount is unknown because the U.S. Department of Education is not required to report its failures, where money went to groups to help them start new charters that never even opened.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;This data set also provides reporters and citizens of each state an opportunity to take a closer look at how much taxpayer money has been squandered on the failed charter school experiment in their states. The data set and the interactive map below are based on more than a decade&#x2019;s worth of official but raw data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;It&#x27;s me, Betsy, one of your many Twitter followers, a viewer of your program, and a person who was honored to hear you speak at the last Rebuild The Dream Convention. &#x26;nbsp;As an Educator, I am grateful for your sharing what is so real for our children. &#x26;nbsp; I too wonder how we as a society think that a child whose stomach is empty can possibly problem solve. &#x26;nbsp; I feel as if I know you, or at least you speak for me, which brings me to the subject of your Letter to Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, &#x3C;a target=&#x22;new&#x22; href=&#x22;http://on.msnbc.com/11KGWsJ&#x22;&#x3E;Rahm Emanuel, there&#x27;s a good reason people are mad at you .&#x3C;/a&#x3E; &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;I understand your cynical reference to &#x3C;a target=&#x22;new&#x22; href=&#x22;http://richardaily.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Rahmbo-Poster-2-RD.jpg&#x22;&#x3E;Rahmbo.&#x3C;/a&#x3E; &#x26;nbsp;I was not surprised that the Time magazine cover 2013, Chicago Bull evoked the sentiment &#x22;what you&#x27;re full of.&#x22; Although, admittedly for me, the comment comes too easily and could easily be dismissed as divisive rather than informative. &#x26;nbsp; However, that you saw &#x3C;em&#x3E;The New York Times&#x27;&#x3C;/em&#x3E; less frequent characterization of Rahm as &#x22;The Merlin to the President&#x27;s King Arthur&#x22; as definitive and delicious baffles me. &#x26;nbsp; In the another &#x3C;em&#x3E;Times&#x3C;/em&#x3E; article Rahm was deemed &#x3C;a target=&#x22;new&#x22; href=&#x22;http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/14/magazine/14emanuel-t.html?em&#x26;amp;_r=0&#x22;&#x3E;&#xE2;&#x80;&#x9C;The leading practitioner of the dark arts of the capital.&#x22;&#x3C;/a&#x3E; &#x26;nbsp;I think this reference tells the more consistent tale. &#x26;nbsp;In the &#x26;nbsp;latter essay, the selection of Rahm Emanuel for the position of &#x26;nbsp;the White House Chief of Staff was termed a &#x22;Faustian bargain.&#x22; I believe this speaks to what is seen today in Chicago. Mayor Emanuel makes decisions or offers policies that benefit friends and family. He has little regard for the consequences and how these affect the common folk or the greater good. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>What is Education?</title>

&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x22;Stay in School.&#x22; &#x22;An education will serve you well.&#x22; These are the words of a Mom, Dad, or Guardian who cares and perhaps, has yet to achieve their dream. Those persons who acquired what they thought they desired too will say the same. The paradox is the problem our progeny understand. Countless ask; is what I receive in a classroom, in a trade, or even on the streets an education? What is an education and does it currently serve our young. Could it?
&#x3C;p&#x3E;The questions are many. The answers are complex. There is much to consider.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Do we encourage our children to stay in school because we believe an education will serve them well or is that but only our hope, our dream. What we would want to be? &#x26;nbsp;If we home school or nurture a trade does the child learn more, less, what seems real and relevant to their unique hearts and heads, or again is the adult served by the decision?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Do we think school will save our youth, our teaching will do the deed, or do we think that our child will have that one Teacher who will save him from poverty, hunger, and the abuse he suffers at home? Is there such a Miracle Worker? &#x26;nbsp;Is that sensational Sage he, she, we, or some entity we pray to? Granted, an education enlightens us all. However the question is what is an education?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Is an education a battery of tests or is it, was it, that Art class that was cut from the curriculum due to costs? &#x26;nbsp;Is it a trip to the museum, the monument, time in the library or&#x2026;Is the question what we teach or how?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Very short reminder about the stakes of closing school.</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/10/27/1151328/-Very-short-reminder-about-the-stakes-of-closing-school</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;As of the posting of this diary, none of the big city megalopolis school districts -- Washington DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, or New York City -- have taken the preemptive step of cancelling classes in advance of Hurricane Sandy.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;I&#x27;ve seen a bunch of people trying to sound angry about this on social media, generally taking the angle that it&#x27;s irresponsible of these school districts not to close in light of the historic nature of the approaching storm.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt/community/pa_pre_k_counts/8742/student_on_free_reduced_lunch/522216&#x22;&#x3E;Somewhere between 20-30% of Pennsylvania students&#x3C;/a&#x3E; are on the free or reduced lunch program.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://articles.nydailynews.com/2010-12-13/news/27084281_1_lunch-program-nutritious-lunches-combat-childhood-obesity&#x22;&#x3E;680,000 NYC public school students&#x3C;/a&#x3E; are on the program.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dchunger.org/fedfoodprogs/lunch/lunch_index.htm&#x22;&#x3E;About 40,000 DC public school students&#x3C;/a&#x3E; are on the program.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;For many students in these districts, the free or reduced school lunch they get every day is the only meal they have all day. &#x3C;strong&#x3E;When schools close, many of these kids do not eat&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Officials keep this in mind when they have to make the decision to cancel classes, so they want to wait until they know that they absolutely cannot avoid closing schools.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Please keep this in mind when thinking about school closures in this and future storms.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;[/civil rant]&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Occupations by parents at two Glasgow schools threatened with closure have entered their second week&#x26;mdash;and put local councillors on the defensive.
