<title>WTF Is Happening In Africa? Did Navy Seals From Team 6 Murder A Green Beret In Mali? And Why?</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2017/10/29/1710813/-WTF-Is-Happening-In-Africa-Did-Navy-Seals-From-Team-6-Murder-A-Green-Beret-In-Mali-And-Why</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;What the Hell is our military doing in Africa?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;In Mali, which borders Niger, a Green Beret was strangled to death in the embassy being used for their housing.&#xA0;In Niger, an African American Green Beret was evidently left behind. Congress still hasn&#x2019;t provided answers on what happened.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Neither the Army nor the military&#x2019;s Africa Command issued a statement about Sergeant Melgar&#x2019;s death, not even after investigators changed their characterization of the two SEALs from &#x201C;witnesses&#x201D; to &#x201C;persons of interest,&#x201D; meaning they were trying to determine what the commandos knew about the crime and if they were involved&#x2026;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The uncertainty has left soldiers in the tight-knit Green Beret community to speculate whether the killing might have been the result of a personal dispute among housemates gone horribly wrong or whether Sergeant Melgar might have stumbled upon some illicit activity the SEALs were involved in, and they silenced him.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Revelations about Sergeant Melgar&#x2019;s death have surfaced against the backdrop of the deaths of &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/05/world/africa/green-berets-killed-niger.html&#x22;&#x3E;four American soldiers in an ambush in neighboring Niger&#x3C;/a&#x3E; this month&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/29/us/politics/navy-seals-team-6-strangle-green-beret-mali.html?smid=tw-nytimes&#x26;amp;smtyp=cur&#x26;amp;_r=0&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;www.nytimes.com/...&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p class=&#x22;is-empty-p&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Why are&#xA0;two members of the team that killed Bin Laden being looked at for murdering a Green Beret? Are they undisciplined&#xA0;enough to have murdered him&#xA0;over a personal beef? Was he being silenced? Is torture or murder of civilians&#xA0;back on our miltary&#x2019;s docket? Is that the big secret?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;What&#x2019;s going on in Africa under the white supremacist Trump administration sounds like it needs to be investigated by Congress and our intelligence agencies.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>9 young children killed in botched Yemen raid which Republicans call a successful, &#x22;winning mission&#x22;</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2017/2/9/1631802/-9-young-children-killed-in-botched-Yemen-raid-which-Republicans-call-a-successful-winning-mission</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Republican infighting continues over what to call the botched operation ordered by Republican president Trump in Yemen 10 days ago:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;McCain initially referred to the raid as &#x201C;a failure&#x201D; but later dialed back his criticism, saying in a statement Tuesday that some objectives were fulfilled in the mission but that he would &#x201C;not describe any operation that results in the loss of American life as a success.&#x201D; [...]&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Last week, Spicer stopped short of calling the raid an unqualified success, telling reporters:&#xA0;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x201C;I think it&#x27;s hard to ever say something was successful when you lose a life.&#x201D; &#x2014; &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2017/02/09/trump-attacks-mccain-for-questioning-success-of-deadly-yemen-raid/&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;WaPo&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;It&#x2019;s clear the only &#x201C;life&#x201D; Spicer thought worth mentioning&#xA0;is the Navy Seal who died during the operation. No Republican politician has the courage to confront the&#xA0;killing of civilians&#xA0;in the&#xA0;operation.&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Republican president Donald Trump called it a &#x201C;winning mission&#x201D;. What exactly was &#x201C;won&#x201D; by sending&#xA0;these nine children to an early grave? One of them &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/story/2017/02/07/1631013/-Hey-Dems,-this-8-yr-old-US-citizen-was-killed-in-that-failed-raid-in-Yemen-Thats-REAL&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;was a US citizen who&#x2019;s 16 year old half-brother (also a US citizen) had previously been killed in a drone strike&#x3C;/a&#x3E;.&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x22;But I think when you look at the totality of what was gained to prevent the future loss of life ... it is a successful operation by all standards,&#x22; Spicer added. &#x2014;&#xA0;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.latimes.com/politics/washington/la-na-essential-washington-updates-white-house-stands-by-assessment-of-1486061058-htmlstory.html&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;LA Times&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Yes, I&#x2019;m certain the families of these children&#xA0;will consider it a &#x201C;successful operation by all standards&#x201D; and take comfort in Sean Spicer&#x2019;s assurances that they were killed to&#xA0;&#x201C;prevent the future loss of life&#x201D;. What does that even mean?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

		&#x3C;/tr&#x3E;
	&#x3C;/tbody&#x3E;
&#x3C;/table&#x3E;
&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The list above was tabulated by journalists who interviewed a number of villagers. A&#xA0;17 year old child, Abdallah Ahmed Abad al Zouba, also died in the shootout, and the total civilian death count stands at 25.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;His son Ahmed was the first casualty. According to al Dahab the 11-year-old was woken by the commotion outside and went to see what was going on. &#x201C;When my son Ahmed saw them, he couldn&#x2019;t tell that they were soldiers because it was dark,&#x201D; he said. &#x201C;He asked them &#x2018;Who are you?&#x2019; but the men shot him. He was the first killed. No one thought that marines would descend on our homes to kill us, kill our children and kill our women.&#x201D; [...]&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Three witnesses said the commandos shot at everyone who left their homes. In these lawless parts of Yemen every home has a Kalashnikov and the residents reached for their guns &#x201C;to defend their homes and their honour,&#x201D; Abdelilah al Dahab said.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The villagers say 38-year-old mother of seven, Fatim Saleh al Ameri was fatally shot by special operators while trying to flee with her two-year-old son Mohammed. &#x201C;We pulled him out from his mother&#x2019;s lap. He was covered in her blood,&#x201D; said 11-year-old Basil Ahmed Abad al&#xAD; Zouba, whose 17-year-old brother was killed.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x2014;&#xA0;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.thebureauinvestigates.com/2017/02/08/nine-young-children-killed-full-details-botched-us-raid-yemen/&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;The Bureau of Investigative Journalism&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The al-Ameri family had previously lost fourteen members (including three children under the age of eight) in a &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/dec/12/air-strike-yemen-15-wedding-guest-killed-mistaken-al-qaida&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;drone strike on a wedding party&#x3C;/a&#x3E;. The US has yet to formally acknowledge that error.&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Villagers say the bombardment from the air continued after the soldiers had withdrawn. The Pentagon initially published a video of a man making bombs which it claimed had been recovered during the raid, but it was later &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-yemen-raid-idUSKBN15I2NT&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;revealed that the video had been published online in 2007&#x3C;/a&#x3E;.&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.newsweek.com/trumps-yemen-raid-killed-nine-children-what-went-wrong-554611&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;Newsweek&#x3C;/a&#x3E; and the &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/nine-children-including-three-month-9786359&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;Mirror&#x3C;/a&#x3E; are carrying the BIJ piece. <title>Yo Congressman Jason Chaffatz</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2017/2/2/1629341/-Yo-Congressman-Jason-Chaffatz</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;So tell us when are you going to start the investigation into the botched attack approved by Donald Trump in Yemen? &#xA0;I figure you&#x2019;re bored right now, after all, Hillary lost the election so investigating her for Benghazi and/or emails will do you no good since you can&#x2019;t impeach her. &#xA0;I mean, look at 2 of your fellow Congressman who got no where with their investigations. &#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Now, here you are with an actual botched attack that you can investigate with others who participated in the attack or have inside knowledge of what went on in the attack and who said this should never have taken place, killing one member of Seal Team 6 and injuring other members and murdering Yemi citizens including several children. &#xA0;Yet with the help of his son-in-law, Jared Kuschner, who&#x2019;s only knowledge of this subject is that he once sold a condo to a businessman from Yemen&#xA0;and that alt-white attached at the hip so he could whisper instructions in Dump&#x2019;s&#xA0;ear, Steve Bannon, who both know so much about the Middle East it makes you dizzy. &#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Come on Congressman Chaffatz, I&#x2019;m waiting for the date when the hearings will be held so I can book my plane reservation and make my hotel reservation (which WON&#x2019;T be at a Trump Hotel). &#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Oh, and by the way, I&#x2019;ll be coming down with Hillary Clinton who wants to see how long they last in the &#x201C;hot seat&#x201D; after the grillings she got.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>An Intercept Report on &#x22;the Crimes of SEAL Team 6&#x22;</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2017/1/12/1619860/-An-Intercept-Report-on-the-Crimes-of-SEAL-Team-6</link>
<description>

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;If I told you I cut off a head after an operation, explaining that I got caught up in the moment, went over the line one time &#x2014; you&#x2019;d have sympathy for me. War is awful and it&#x2019;s human to go too far, but this isn&#x2019;t one time. This is multiple times on each deployment.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x2014;former SEAL team leader&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;In March 2002, during Operation Anaconda, Navy SEALs&#xA0;attempted a&#xA0;before-dawn helicopter insertion to establish an observation post on a mountain peak overlooking the Shah-i Kot valley in Paktia province.&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#xA0;These mountains had been&#xA0;important in the mujahideen war against the Soviet occupation.&#xA0;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;The helicopter touched down in a small saddle near the top of the ridge, and the&#xA0;SEALs&#xA0;moved into position at the rear door to get off. At the head of the line was Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Neil C. Roberts.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The chopper&#x27;s crew reported the presence of a heavy machine gun about 50 yards off the nose of the aircraft. But the gun appeared unmanned, a not uncommon site in&#xA0;Afghanistan, whose mountain ridges and caves are littered with seemingly abandoned tanks and antiaircraft guns. The&#xA0;SEALs&#xA0;announced they were leaving.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;At that moment, machine-gun fire erupted from several directions, ripping into the chopper. A rocket-propelled grenade came flaming in from the left, tearing through the cargo bay and exploding.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x22;I saw a big flash,&#x22; said Jeremy, a crew chief. &#x22;By the time I got my senses back, we were flying down the mountain.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Dan, the crew chief on the rear right, shouted to the pilot: &#x22;We&#x27;re taking fire! Go! Go! Go!&#x22; The pilot applied full throttle, but the grenade had short-circuited the aircraft&#x27;s electrical power and damaged its hydraulic system. The machine-gun fire had punctured oil lines and wires. The chopper wobbled and jerked as it lifted off.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;As it lurched, Roberts went flying off the back ramp.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/2002/05/24/bravery-and-breakdowns-in-a-ridgetop-battle/dce1eefb-d159-47e9-846c-2678b1615fee/?utm_term=.d058443af8b0&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;Bravery and Breakdowns in a Ridgetop Battle&#x3C;/a&#x3E;, Bradley Graham, Washington Post&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;When Neil Robert&#x2019;s body was recovered, during&#xA0;a battle killing seven&#xA0;&#x3C;span&#x3E;U.S. service members&#x3C;/span&#x3E;, it had been partially decapitated.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Matthew Cole at &#x3C;em&#x3E;the Intercept&#x3C;/em&#x3E; has published &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://theintercept.com/2017/01/10/the-crimes-of-seal-team-6/&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;a major investigation&#x3C;/a&#x3E; detailing a long pattern of&#xA0;&#x3C;span&#x3E;unjustified killings, mutilations, and other atrocities&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#xA0;by members of SEAL Team&#xA0;6. Cole has interviewed&#xA0;&#x3C;span&#x3E;18&#xA0;SEAL Team members, including four&#xA0;senior leaders, over two years.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;SEAL Team 6 is the subject of a very large amount of positive publicity emphasizing its elite nature. But it has been insulated, Cole says, from the scrutiny and military justice that lesser units would have faced for many of its darker, criminally brutal actions.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;The prevailing narrative about SEAL Team 6 in news coverage, bestselling books, and Hollywood movies is unambiguously heroic; it centers on the killing of Osama bin Laden and high-profile rescue missions. With few&#xA0;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/07/world/asia/the-secret-history-of-seal-team-6.html?_r=0&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;exceptions&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;, a darker, more troubling story has been suppressed and ignored &#x2014; a story replete with tactical brilliance on battlefields around the world coupled with a pattern of silence and deceit when &#x201C;downrange&#x201D; actions lead to episodes of criminal brutality. The unit&#x2019;s elite stature has insulated its members from the scrutiny and military justice that lesser units would have faced for the same actions.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;The day&#xA0;after the recovery of Neil Roberts&#x2019; mutilated body, the United States had opened fire on some vehicles in the Shah-i-Kot Valley. SEAL teams were then placed on the ground.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;One, led by an enlisted operator, took in the damage to one of the vehicles. Men, women, and a small girl, motionless and in the fetal position, appeared dead. Inside the vehicle were one or two rifles, as is customary in Afghanistan, but none of the men wore military clothing or had any extra ammunition. &#x201C;These were family weapons,&#x201D; said the retired SEAL.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;A SEAL team commander&#xA0;had shot an unarmed wounded Afghan, and mutilated his body. &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Cole places&#xA0;this early 2002 event as central in the development of a culture and a pattern of secrecy, silence, and impunity for crime&#xA0;within SEAL Team 6.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;According to multiple SEAL Team 6 sources, the events of that day set off a cascade of extraordinary violence. As the legend of SEAL Team 6 grew, a rogue culture arose that operated outside of the Navy&#x2019;s established mechanisms for command and investigation. Parts of SEAL Team 6 began acting with an air of impunity that disturbed observers within the command. Senior members of SEAL Team 6 felt the pattern of brutality was not only illegal but rose to the level of war crimes.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Dave Cooper, Command Master Chief SEAL (Retired) for the Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU), has authored a threat assessment concluding TransCanada&#x2018;s Keystone XL tar sands pipeline is potentially at-risk of a terrorism attack.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;In the report, Cooper concluded operational security vulnerabilities for the pipeline have been overlooked by the U.S. government. Cooper &#x2014; &#x26;nbsp;most famous for overseeing the Abbottabad, Pakistan Osama Bin Laden raid as the commander of Navy SEAL Team Six &#x2014; wrote the report as a consultant for billionaire Tom Steyer&#x2018;s advocacy group NextGen Climate Action.&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>An eventful day on &#x22;The Hill&#x22;</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/7/25/1226389/-An-eventful-day-on-The-Hill-front-page</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Here are the most important articles on &#x3C;em&#x3E;The Hill&#x27;s&#x3C;/em&#x3E; front page tonight (June 24th), in approximately visual order:&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://thehill.com/blogs/on-the-money/domestic-taxes/313259-senates-tax-writers-offering-50-years-of-secrecy&#x22;&#x3E;Tax writers promise 50 years of secrecy for senators&#x27; suggestions&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
By Bernie Becker
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) and the panel&#x2019;s top Republican, Sen. Orrin Hatch (Utah), assured lawmakers that any submission they receive will be kept under lock and key by the committee and the National Archives until the end of 2064.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
Sounds like an open, democratic process to me.&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://thehill.com/blogs/defcon-hill/operations/313331-house-rejects-effort-to-curb-nsa-surveillance-powers&#x22;&#x3E;House rejects effort to curb NSA surveillance powers, 205-217&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
By Jeremy Herb
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Amash&#x2019;s amendment to the Defense Appropriations bill pitted liberal Democrats and libertarian Republicans opposed to the NSA&#x2019;s massive surveillance activities against both parties&#x2019; leadership and the Obama administration.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
Hey look, the people who care at least a little bit about governance principles and their utility to a free and representative society... versus the people who don&#x27;t give a damn about that malarkey and are just in it for the power.&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://thehill.com/blogs/global-affairs/human-rights/313391-no-love-for-snowden-among-nsa-critics-in-congress&#x22;&#x3E;No love for Edward Snowden among NSA critics on Capitol Hill&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
By Julian Pecquet
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Some say he should have raised red flags with Congress instead of going to the press.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
A fat lot of good that would&#x27;ve done. You jackasses (at least the ones on intelligence committees and the &#x22;Gang of Eight&#x22;) &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/06/13/1215698/-Congress-worried-too-much-is-kept-secret-Just-tell-us-what-it-is-already&#x22;&#x3E;already knew and didn&#x27;t tell us,&#x3C;/a&#x3E; other than a couple of Senators dropping hints. Tell me with a straight face you wouldn&#x27;t have just sat on it, just like many of your predecessors did in similar situations. Edward Snowden will go down in history as a national and global hero, and kids reading history books a generation from now will know your ilk for the cowards you are.&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://thehill.com/blogs/on-the-money/economy/313191-obama-talks-up-economy-hits-gop-focus-on-phoney-scandals&#x22;&#x3E;Obama dismisses scandals as &#x2018;phony&#x2019;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
By Justin Sink
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Obama&#x2019;s comments marked an inflection point in the way the administration has been dealing with a raft of controversies, many of which the White House has previously suggested were substantive.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
Perhaps the President should have done that before letting the IRS take so much damage and before dismissing the director. Or, say, before letting Shirley Sherrod go, or Van Jones, or...&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://thehill.com/blogs/global-affairs/europe/313315-snowden-fate-threatens-long-term-us-russia-relations&#x22;&#x3E;Snowden fate threatens to be long-term thorn in US-Russia relations&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
By Julian Pecquet
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x201C;Perhaps he likes the cold? Perhaps he couldn&#x2019;t figure out how to get [to Latin America]?&#x201D; said Danielle Pletka, vice-president for foreign and defense policy studies at the conservative American Enterprise Institute.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x201C;Perhaps he felt it was enough to see his country slapped in the face, and he wants nothing more. Who knows.&#x201D;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x22;Foreign and defense policy studies&#x22;&#x2014;that a class in the fourth grade? Because that&#x27;s about the level of maturity of that little taunt.&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://thehill.com/homenews/house/313365-house-dems-warn-of-more-border-deaths-under-senate-immigration-bill&#x22;&#x3E;House Democrats warn of more border deaths under Senate immigration bill&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
By Mike Lillis
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Rep. John Carter (R-Texas), a member of the bipartisan group negotiating a comprehensive reform package in the House, is also wary of the heavy emphasis on the border fence. He warned earlier this month that anyone hoping to seal the Southern border entirely is dreaming.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x201C;I&#x27;ve been down there all my life, and I&#x27;m telling you, you can have a 40-foot wall and put machine guns on it, and you can&#x27;t secure the Southern border,&#x22; he said. &#x22;There&#x27;s too much wild country.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
No argument from me on that! Plus, wild animal habitat obstruction: how arrogant and destructive of us to wall off the movement of large land animals.&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://thehill.com/blogs/floor-action/senate/313343-senate-votes-81-18-to-approve-a-bipartisan-student-loan-bill&#x22;&#x3E;Senate approves deal on student loan rates&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
By Ramsey Cox
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Warren, along with Sens. Jack Reed (D-R.I.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) argued that they could not support the bill because it &#x201C;profits off the backs of students.&#x201D;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;According to the Congressional Budget Office, the Senate bill generates $184 billion in profit over 10 years for the government &#x2014; roughly the same amount as if the 6.8 percent rate remained in place.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
Ayup. What&#x27;s the rationale for the government to take money away from students?&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://thehill.com/blogs/global-affairs/global-economy/313373-republicans-to-boycott-obamas-homeland-security-pick-over-visa-probe&#x22;&#x3E;Republicans to boycott hearing for Obama&#x27;s Homeland Security pick&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
By Julian Pecquet&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Republicans say they&#x27;ll boycott Thursday&#x27;s hearing on President Obama&#x27;s pick for Number 2 at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) over allegations he misused his government position to help a Chinese firm get U.S. visas.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
I&#x27;m inclined to see how this one plays out&#x2014;not feeling much sympathy for either side of this particular fight.&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/senate-races/313361-mcconnell-challenger-criticizes-gop-senate-leaders-slash-and-burn-style&#x22;&#x3E;McConnell challenger criticizes GOP Senate leader&#x2019;s &#x2018;slash and burn&#x2019; style&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
By Alexandra Jaffe&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
Two points:&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;ul&#x3E;
&#x3C;li&#x3E;The most important thing about this is the way it influences McConnell&#x27;s policy positions, for better and for worse.&#x3C;/li&#x3E;
&#x3C;li&#x3E;Actually, forget that, the most important thing is to stock up on popcorn.&#x3C;/li&#x3E;
&#x3C;/ul&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://thehill.com/blogs/defcon-hill/policy-and-strategy/313159-report-pentagon-delays-fighter-sales-to-egypt&#x22;&#x3E;Pentagon delays fighter sales to Egypt&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
By Carlo Mu&#xF1;oz
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Earlier this month, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) introduced legislation to end all military funding to Egypt.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
Here&#x27;s another opportunity for a left-right policy alliance.&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://thehill.com/homenews/house/313039-congress-to-probe-lethal-seal-crash&#x22;&#x3E;Congress to probe lethal crash that killed SEAL Team 6 members&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
By Bob Cusack
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Shortly before the CH-47 Chinook helicopter took off on a rescue mission (operation Extortion 17), seven Afghan commandos who were on the passenger list were replaced by other Afghan military officials.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;It remains unclear why the manifest was incorrect, raising red flags among the victims&#x2019; families.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;[...] &#x201C;The body I saw didn&#x2019;t need to be cremated,&#x201D; Chaffetz said, adding that the Department of Defense&#x2019;s explanation of its failure to find the helicopter&#x2019;s black box seems &#x201C;awfully odd.&#x201D;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
Watch this one. I want Congress to get to the bottom of it too.

<title>Murdochgate: Rupert to Air PRO-OBAMA Bin Laden Raid Film Nov. 4th. Stay-Out-of-Jail Ploy?</title>

&#x3C;p&#x3E;From &#x3C;em&#x3E;The Guardian&#x3C;/em&#x3E;:&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;Film producer Harvey Weinstein may prove to be the secret weapon of the Barack Obama re-election campaign thanks to a film about the killing of Osama Bin Laden that is set to air on US TV just 48 hours before polling day.
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama Bin Laden is the first high-profile dramatisation of the attack on the al-Qaida leader&#x27;s Pakistan hide-out. The incident, in May 2011, was widely regarded as a coup for the Obama administration, following former President Bush&#x27;s failed seven-year attempt to catch Bin Laden &#x22;dead or alive&#x22;.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Produced by the Weinstein Company, &#x3C;strong&#x3E;the film will be broadcast on the National Geographic Channel on Sunday 4 November&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;. &#x22;While some of the characterisations have been dramatised for creative reasons, the core story is an accurate portrayal of an event that ended the longest manhunt in American history,&#x22; the channel said in a statement.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

Depending on how well put together and written, that will be up to the historians and readers, as a direct first hand account of probably the most important mission, especially the one of abandoned as to why we sent our military into that region with the first drum beat pointed at Iraq and the countries almost total support of that, thus turning the Afghan conflict into a war, quagmire, of choice from that moment on.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Knowing sooner, rather then later, another book or books would be written and probably by a third person through interviews etc. and in their words and more then likely not a military, or veteran of, experienced in that community or operations of. Probably even a hollywood take and action film with all the bells and whistles for more dramatic effect.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Pentagon Considers Legal Action Against Seal Team 6 Author </title>

&#x3C;p&#x3E;From &#x3C;em&#x3E;AP&#x3C;/em&#x3E;:&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;The Pentagon&#x27;s top lawyer has informed the former Navy SEAL who authored a forthcoming book describing details of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden that he violated agreements to not divulge military secrets and that as a result the Pentagon is considering taking legal action against him.
&#x3C;p&#x3E;The general counsel of the Defense Department, Jeh Johnson, wrote in a letter transmitted to the author on Thursday that he had signed two nondisclosure agreements with the Navy in 2007 that obliged him to &#x22;never divulge&#x22; classified information. Johnson said that after reviewing a copy of the book, &#x22;No Easy Day,&#x22; the Pentagon concluded that the author is in &#x22;material breach and violation&#x22; of the agreements.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Johnson said the department is considering pursuing against him &#x22;all remedies legally available to us.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Will it be an Historic take, historically related to the 9/11 attacks on this country, by one of those attached to the Team that did the raid on the compound and not given to a third party to write a non witness report of? We&#x27;ll have to be the judges of that value to History.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Right now the author is getting slammed by some in the SEAL community, forget the other books some have written over the years or the consultations with Hollywood for movies or TV drama&#x27;s or the many episodes the Pentagon have put out and related to SEAL team training and ops, about their lives in, for possible outings of SEAL ops and in this case writing about One Of The Main Missions we sent troops into that region in the first place. Only to have all abandoned quickly after the invasion of Afghanistan with the first drum beats pointed at Iraq, not only the Missions but the promises of this country once again given to the Afghan people.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Some in my earlier diary kept trying to make that all about this clip I posted in it:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;center&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://security.blogs.cnn.com/2012/08/22/navy-seal-to-release-book-on-bin-laden-raid/&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;b&#x3E;Navy SEAL to release book on bin Laden raid&#x3C;/b&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/center&#x3E;
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;&#x3C;img width=&#x22;120&#x22; align=&#x22;left&#x22; src=&#x22;http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/jimstaro/t1larg-abbottabad.jpg&#x22; /&#x3E;A book company said Wednesday that it will release on September 11 a firsthand account of the raid that killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Christine Ball, director of marketing and publicity for Dutton, a subsidiary of Penguin Group USA, said the book was written by a Navy SEAL under a pen name.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;The book is entitled &#x3C;i&#x3E;&#x22;No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission That Killed Osama bin Laden.&#x22;&#x3C;/i&#x3E; &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://security.blogs.cnn.com/2012/08/22/navy-seal-to-release-book-on-bin-laden-raid/&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;b&#x3E;read abit more&#x26;gt;&#x26;gt;&#x26;gt;&#x3C;/b&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Knowing as little about this whole issue as I do or did.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;CBS News just did a report on, right now waiting for that report to be posted hopefully with the video, but most of the time their reports are close to transcripts of the actual TV report.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Navy Seal Writer of upcoming Bin Laden book revealed by FOX</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/8/23/1123424/-Navy-Seal-Writer-of-upcoming-Bin-Laden-book-revealed-by-FOX</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;On September 11, the book, No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission That Killed Osama Bin Laden,&#x22; will be released. &#x26;nbsp;It was penned by a Navy seal, who wished to be anonymous. &#x26;nbsp;From the accounts, it seems that he didn&#x27;t do much to protect his anonymity, as ha apparently wrote of his life in Alaska, before going into detail on the secret mission that led to killing of Bin Laden.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Today, &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/08/23/author-bin-laden-raid-insider-account-idd-could-face-legal-trouble/&#x22;&#x3E;FOX released his identity&#x3C;/a&#x3E;. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Many important accounts have been released through secret sources.. many books written by those with a pseudonym have made a difference. &#x26;nbsp;However, did he compromise National Security?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Seal Team 6 Author Outed by Fox News</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/8/23/1123394/-Seal-Team-6-Author-Outed-by-Fox-News</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;I just wanted to post a short note about this since I didn&#x27;t see it anywhere else. The &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.theatlanticwire.com/global/2012/08/fox-news-outs-navy-seal-team-6-author/56115/&#x22;&#x3E;Atlantic Wire&#x3C;/a&#x3E; has reported that Justin Fishel of Fox News has outed the author of the soon to be released &#x22;No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission That Killed Osama Bin Laden&#x22;. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Supposedly there were multiple sources confirming the identity. &#x26;nbsp;I don&#x27;t want to put his name here although it&#x27;s already out there... including the link I gave. I&#x27;m not sure how much danger this puts the author in or what kind of legal trouble he will face. I do wonder since Fox News did the outing if the book was flattering to the president.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Anyone who doubts that President Obama has a solid lead, should simply watch This Week this morning.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;The media desperately wants a close election, don&#x27;t you think?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Well, if you had any doubts about either of the above, find a clip of this show.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;I need to scream - figure I&#x27;ll do it here...&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Targeting Bin Laden Documentary</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/9/6/1014124/-Targeting-Bin-Laden-Documentary</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;I just finished watching Targeting Bin Laden on the History Channel. For anyone in farther-west time zones than Philadelphia, PA, PLEASE, don&#x27;t waste another minute reading this, go watch it.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;It is fascinating, detailed, thoughtful, thorough and honorable... but one point is profoundly disturbing: Why ISN&#x27;T this documentary playing on every major network on the television tonight?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Why did I only stumble upon it by a lucky happenstance of channel surfing?&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Jon Stewart warns of big media corporations seeking more power</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/5/17/976725/-Jon-Stewart-warns-of-big-media-corporations-seeking-more-power</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Jon Stewart had a &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-may-16-2011/well--that-was-fast---comcast-nbc-merger&#x22;&#x3E;good segment&#x3C;/a&#x3E; on last night that highlights the recent trend of big media companies trying to gain even more power, from Disney trying to trademark &#x22;Seal Team 6&#x22; to the Comcast/NBC Universal merger.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;Disney isn&#x27;t the only big media company making the moves.
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;BRIAN WILLIAMS (1/18/2011): Federal regulators today approved the purchase by Comcast of a majority stake in NBC Universal from General Electric. ... This merger will create a $30 billion media company, with cable, broadcast, Internet, motion picture, and theme park components.&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Oh thank God, now if I have my cable go out, and I go to a theme park and choke on a giant fried turkey leg, right before I find out my favorite show got cancelled, I only have to call one number to complain. &#x26;nbsp;This monopoly&#x27;s awesome! &#x26;nbsp;I don&#x27;t know why this doesn&#x27;t happen more often. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;b&#x3E;Oh right, &#x27;cause it&#x27;s illegal.&#x3C;/b&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Video and transcript below the fold.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
