<title>The Overlooked minority and the ADA</title>

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;dkimg-cap&#x22;&#x3E;Former Iowa Senator and ADA Sponsor Tom Harkin leads Disabiltity Pride Parade&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;If I asked you what is the largest protected class under civil rights law in the US, what would be your answer? &#x26;nbsp;African Americans or Hispanic citizens perhaps?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Would the very large minority group made up of those who have a legally recognized disability even be on your radar? &#x26;nbsp;Probably not, as I can find no one writing about this group on Daily Kos.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Here are the &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/facts_for_features_special_editions/cb10-ff13.html&#x22;&#x3E;2010 numbers&#x3C;/a&#x3E; from the US Census Bureau&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;54 million&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
Number of people who have a &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.ada.gov/cguide.htm&#x22;&#x3E;disability&#x3C;/a&#x3E;. They represent 19 percent of the civilian noninstitutionalized population.&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
That makes this group almost the same proportion of citizens as the Hispanic population in the United States.

<title>Obama, de Blasio and the Challenge of Inequality</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/12/11/1262088/-Obama-de-Blasio-and-the-Challenge-of-Inequality</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;The day after President Obama described inequality as the &#x201C;defining challenge of our times,&#x201D; fast-food workers walked off the job in 100 cities across the country, demanding to be paid $15 an hour and the right to unionize without employer interference.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;That evening, about 1,000 workers gathered in Foley Square in New York City, where they expressed hope for a better life under the administration of Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio, whose progressive &#x201C;tale of two cities&#x201D; campaign focused on the sharp inequality in the world&#x2019;s financial capital. After the rally, the protestors marched to Zuccotti Park, birthplace of the Occupy Wall Street movement.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Expand-Don&#x27;t Cut--Social Security</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/8/19/1232434/-Expand-Don-t-Cut-Social-Security</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;With a growing acceptance that millions of Americans will face a retirement crisis, the deficit hawks&#x2019; call for cutting Social Security is losing credibility.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;As the federal deficit continues to fall and the baby-boom generation enters retirement with insufficient savings to maintain their standard of living, the deficit hawks will be exposed as callous anti-tax advocates and drum majors for the 1 percent if they persist in their attack on Social Security. But the Right&#x2019;s campaign to reduce benefits has always been based more on a conservative and anti-government ideology than facts.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;As the United States continues to become more economically polarized, we should be talking about expanding Social Security rather than reducing benefits and forcing the cash-strapped poor and middle class to contribute more.&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>ENDA Hearing</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/5/11/1090712/-ENDA-Hearing</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;As nice as it was for President Obama to come out in support of same-sex marriage...and it was pleasant...people in the trans community have good cause to fear that focus will again shift away from something that would actually help more people: &#x26;nbsp;protection from employment discrimination.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) is chair of the Senate &#x3C;strong&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;. &#x26;nbsp;In that capacity &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.washingtonblade.com/2012/05/10/breaking-senate-committee-agrees-to-hold-hearing-on-enda/&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;he has announced that he intends to hold a hearing&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E; on the &#x3C;strong&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;Employment NonDiscrimination Act&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/strong&#x3E; (ENDA) on June 12.&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;Every American deserves an equal opportunity to earn a good living, judged by their talent, ability and qualifications free from discrimination. &#x26;nbsp;Workplace discrimination based on an employee&#x2019;s sexual orientation or gender identity is reprehensible and has no place in our nation.
&#x3C;p&#x3E;This upcoming HELP Committee hearing will provide an excellent opportunity to build on the Committee&#x2019;s previous work and help advance our shared goal of equal rights for all Americans. &#x26;nbsp;I am hopeful that working together, we will reach a point where lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons enjoy the same rights and protections, and full equality, as all our fellow Americans.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;--Sen. Harkin&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
There is no word at this time whether the witnesses will actually include any transpeople. &#x26;nbsp;At the last hearing about ENDA in 2009 Thomas Perez, assistant AG for the Justice Department&#x27;s Civil Rights Division testified in favor of the bill, but no transpeople were called to testify.

<title>New Push for ENDA</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/3/16/1075050/-New-Push-for-ENDA</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;In an effort that has been ongoing for about two-decades, &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.washingtonblade.com/2012/03/14/new-push-for-2012-senate-hearing-on-enda/&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;there is a new push&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E; for a Senate hearing and a committee vote on the &#x3C;strong&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;Employment Non-discrimination Act&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/strong&#x3E; (ENDA). &#x26;nbsp;I know I&#x27;ve personally been pushing an inclusive ENDA since 1995.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Yes, we know that it is unlikely to get any consideration at all in the House...unless it is negative consideration. &#x26;nbsp;But Tom Harkin is chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee and he is a longtime supporter of ENDA.&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;I hope he will use his chairmanship to organize an ENDA hearing this spring or summer.
&#x3C;p&#x3E;--Tico Almeida, president of &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.freedomtowork.org/&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;Freedom to Work&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;When there&#x2019;s nothing else going on, it&#x2019;s always good to try to get a hearing. &#x26;nbsp;It keeps the ball moving. It keeps reminding everybody that there are some issues that we all know we have to cover eventually.
&#x3C;p&#x3E;--Mara Keisling, executive director of the &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://transequality.org/&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;National Center for Transgender Equality&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Sanders, Harkin, Hightower Highlight Progressive Meeting</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/9/7/778509/-Sanders-Harkin-Hightower-Highlight-Progressive-Meeting</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Many of the top heavyweights in the progressive cause will gather together on Friday &#x26;amp; Saturday, September 11th and 12th, for the &#x22;Fighting Bob Fest.&#x22; The event is named, of course, for the late great progressive leader &#x22;Fighting Bob&#x22; LaFollette. &#x26;nbsp; Speaker/participants include Senators Bernie Sanders and Tom Harkin; Jim Hightower; John Nichols; Tammy Baldwin; Jeremy Scahill; Dr. Gene Farley and, Alfred McCoy. &#x26;nbsp;Here&#x27;s how the organizers describe the event:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Fighting Bob Fest is an annual Chautauqua featuring progressive speakers, networking opportunities, and entertainment. Fighting Bob Fest carries on the tradition of Robert &#x22;Fighting Bob&#x22; La Follette by providing a forum for progressive ideas on issues...

<title>Black Kos, Week In Review</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/6/19/742298/-Black-Kos-Week-In-Review</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;img vspace=&#x22;3&#x22; hspace=&#x22;4&#x22; align=&#x22;right&#x22; src=&#x22;http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj38/blackkos/sisspeak.jpg&#x22; /&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;Commentary&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;Robinswing, Black Kos Editor&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;In my sixth decade on this planet I am amazed that both of my parents are alive and well. &#x26;nbsp;Funny to be seniors together. &#x26;nbsp;Whenever my father calls me his baby girl I remind him that his baby girl is AARP. &#x26;nbsp;We both laugh at this.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I still call him Daddy. &#x26;nbsp;When I think of him, he is always young. &#x26;nbsp;I see him outside mowing the lawn, young handsome and strong. &#x26;nbsp;I forget until I see him that he has grown old and each time I see him he appears to me smaller. &#x26;nbsp;I see his frailty. &#x26;nbsp;I remember his strength. &#x26;nbsp;He and my mother are both strong people. &#x26;nbsp;Different strengths. &#x26;nbsp;Both strong.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Most of the young women in my generation were socialized to seek approval. &#x26;nbsp;My father taught me to seek respect. &#x26;nbsp;To insist upon it. &#x26;nbsp;I will always be grateful to him for this.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
