<title>Women&#x27;s March Founder Calls for New Leadership citing Farrakhan and anti LGBT sentiment</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2018/11/19/1814075/-Women-s-March-Founder-Calls-for-New-Leadership-citing-Farrakhan-and-anti-LGBT-sentiment</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;For those of you following the argument over the ties between the Nation of Islam and the National Co Chairs of the Women&#x2019;s March, this will come as no surprise. For those unfamiliar, I will do my best to summarize below.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;hr&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Star Date November 2016: A Maui lawyer posted a desire for the people to march on Washington to protest the election of Donald Trump to the US presidency. Overnight, a hopeful thought turned into an event with over ten thousand RSVPs.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/local/wp/2017/01/31/the-woman-who-started-the-womens-march-with-a-facebook-post-reflects-it-was-mind-boggling/?utm_term=.c51aa0cff2b3&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;When the election results became clear Nov. 8, Shook needed a place to vent. She turned to the pro-Hillary Clinton &#x201C;Pantsuit Nation&#x201D; Facebook page and posted that she thought a pro-women march was needed. Others agreed. &#x3C;span&#x3E;She hoped&#x3C;/span&#x3E; someone else would take the lead, but when no one did, she asked about how to make a Facebook group and did it herself.&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/local/wp/2017/01/31/the-woman-who-started-the-womens-march-with-a-facebook-post-reflects-it-was-mind-boggling/?utm_term=.c51aa0cff2b3&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;As she went to bed, a few dozen friends had said they would attend. By the time she woke up, 10,000 people had RSVP&#x2019;d to what would eventually become the Women&#x2019;s March on Washington.&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;

&#x3C;hr&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Fast forward a few years and the March co chairs have come under criticism for anti-semitism&#xA0;and anti LGBTQIA sentiment, mostly from their support for Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of Islam. I hope that this isn&#x2019;t new information, but if it is, check&#xA0;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2018/03/womens-march/555122/&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;The Women&#x27;s March Has a Farrakhan Problem The group refuses to be accountable for a high-level alliance with an open anti-Semite.&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#xA0;from the Atlantic.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Mass movements are sewn together from a wide variety of sources, so they often sweep in unwanted companions as they move toward their goals. No one, however, expected to&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#xA0;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://blogs.timesofisrael.com/the-feminist-farrakhan-fans-who-organized-the-womens-march/&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;discover&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#xA0;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;that three Women&#x2019;s March co-chairs&#x2014;Linda Sarsour, Carmen Perez, and Tamika Mallory&#x2014;had ties to Farrakhan. More mysterious and disturbing was the extended reluctance of the Women&#x2019;s March, nearly a year since it became public, to acknowledge Farrakhan&#x2019;s extremist views and disassociate themselves from them.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;It all came to a head last week, after Farrakhan delivered his&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#xA0;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DMPSt_IQac&#x22;&#x3E;address&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#xA0;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;to the annual Nation of Islam gathering for Saviours&#x2019; Day, the sect&#x2019;s three-day holiday honoring its founder, Wallace Fard Muhammad. Farrakhan denounced &#x201C;Satanic Jews,&#x201D; said that &#x201C;when you want something in this world, the Jew holds the door,&#x201D; and at the climax of his speech, proclaimed, &#x201C;White folks are going down, and Satan is going down, and Farrakhan by God&#x2019;s grace has pulled the cover off of that Satanic Jew&#x2014;and I&#x2019;m here to say, your time is up.&#x201D;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;

&#x3C;hr&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Here is Shook&#x2019;s Facebook post from today &#x2026;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p class=&#x22;is-empty-p&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;dk-editor-embed center-block&#x22;&#x3E;
&#x3C;div class=&#x22;remove-embed-content&#x22;&#x3E;x&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;a class=&#x22;iframe_placeholder facebook dk-embed&#x22; href=&#x22;false&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22; data-frameborder=&#x22;0&#x22; data-height=&#x22;270&#x22; data-src=&#x22;https://www.facebook.com/plugins/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FTeresaShookOfficial%2Fposts%2F2368957223146495&#x26;amp;width=500&#x22; data-width=&#x22;500&#x22;&#x3E;Facebook Content&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;p class=&#x22;is-empty-p&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span style=&#x22;text-align:start&#x22;&#x3E;Bob Bland, Tamika Mallory, Linda Sarsour and Carmen Perez of Women&#x2019;s March, Inc. have steered the Movement away from its true course. I have waited, hoping they would right the ship. But they have not. &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span style=&#x22;text-align:start&#x22;&#x3E;In opposition to our Unity Principles, they have allowed anti-Semitism, anti- LBGTQIA sentiment and hateful, racist rhetoric to become a part of the platform by their refusal to separate themselves from groups that espouse these racist, hateful beliefs. &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span style=&#x22;text-align:start&#x22;&#x3E;I call for the current Co-Chairs to step down and to let others lead who can restore faith in the Movement and its original intent. I stand in Solidarity with all the Sister March Organizations, to bring the Movement back to its authentic purpose. &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span style=&#x22;text-align:start&#x22;&#x3E;As Women&#x2019;s March founder, I am stepping up to bring focus back to the Unity Principles on which our movement began, and with the support of all of those who marched and have continued to march, I pledge to support grassroots, decentralized leadership promoting a safe, worldwide community devoid of hate speech, bigotry and racism.&#x201D;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;

&#x3C;hr&#x3E;
&#x3C;p class=&#x22;is-empty-p&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Sarsour, Mallory, Bland, and Perez responded with &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.facebook.com/1338822066131069/posts/2195261367153797/&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;their own FB post&#x3C;/a&#x3E;.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p style=&#x22;text-align:start&#x22;&#x3E;We want to thank&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#xA0;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.facebook.com/TeresaShookOfficial/?__tn__=K-R&#x26;amp;eid=ARBG93ysOt_fWd545ZnR0IuXXQX1Viy0TSE93CwGo_Qavp-_cFkuyYegAoYWHGngQQlqhJ5ExRgyowJ2&#x26;amp;fref=mentions&#x26;amp;__xts__%5B0%5D=68.ARB35F_s3UYAZcYuNU3rXxKMuphomVbqiwA-ffN4uISEXrPb3tq6NuTUHZjvpkwLaO003yj5LYphp6IYdFmQ4y4_Sxr0HoTfsIq7fQINbKwmFug9OxhS0j-AoeYIYKT3uGQm4e3zEUPD3-dlCCbgKtBZPKUsgrF6MwGXQnVyKHTpdSArYib-JtZAk0peQcAL1KOAZdMDbbnMSaSMJTmUIovf_Ux5tRnIZt0T0r9KGjPWfvmDEoIdGVfQy2xt6s9tuAX50Fngzk6k8riK5WgNBMGcoeWvNo53fZdCul86kpgCXe0q9Rg_cLZrZOT5a0x-2YfIB0f0rAIUJkf6-IzRkYCA&#x22;&#x3E;Teresa Shook&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#xA0;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;for her contribution to our movement, creating a Facebook event named the Million Women&#x2019;s March. That was the very beginning of the Women&#x2019;s March, which grew from a Facebook event into the largest single-day protest in US history, one led by women of color.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p style=&#x22;text-align:start&#x22;&#x3E;Today, Teresa Shook weighed in, irresponsibly, as have other organizations attempting in this moment to take advantage of our growing pains to try and fracture our network. Groups that have benefited from our work but refuse to organize in accordance with our Unity Principles clearly have no interest in building the world our principles envision. They have not done the work to mobilize women from diverse backgrounds across the nation.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p style=&#x22;text-align:start&#x22;&#x3E;We are imperfect. We don&#x2019;t know everything and we have caused harm. At times we have responded with hurt. But we are committed to learning. We will continue to work through the good and the bad, the impact and the harm &#x2014; of building an intersectional movement that our daughters, and our daughters&#x2019; daughters can be proud of.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p style=&#x22;text-align:start&#x22;&#x3E;We are grateful for people who HAVE been with us for the past two years, wrestling with the challenges and opportunities of what we are trying to build. Our ongoing work speaks for itself. That&#x2019;s our focus, not armchair critiques from those who want to take credit for our labor.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;

&#x3C;hr&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;This has been on my radar for a little while now, mostly because of Jewish friends who have been very vocal about the connection to Farrakhan. The issue also got some attention recently when Alyssa Milano refused to work with or speak at Women&#x2019;s March events until the organization distanced itself from Farrakhan and his remarks.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I am mostly saddened by this story. I was at the Million Man March. I wrestled with Farrakhan&#x2019;s ideology when Chuck D of Public Enemy told me: Don&#x2019;t tell me that you understand, until you hear the man! I wrestled with Farrakhan and the Nation when I read The Autobiography of Malcolm X. I wrestled with Farrakhan when the Nation of Islam&#x2019;s security teams were contracted for security in Baltimore public housing projects in the 1990s.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;At the end of the day, I&#x2019;ve got to side with Theresa Shook, Alyssa Milano, and the others who have called for the Women&#x2019;s March to distance itself from the Nation of Islam and Louis Farrakhan.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The response from Sarsour, Mallory, Bland, and Perez doesn&#x2019;t cut it for me. There is a certain defensiveness that I find telling. So I&#x2019;m adding my &#x201C;armchair critique&#x201D;.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;It&#x2019;s simple. You want to work for intersectional progress? Then everyone gets the same respect. Jews and the LGBT community are just as deserving of representation and respect as anyone else. Hell, I would be happy with a simple public statement from the national co chairs that they hear and understand the criticism. They have been given every chance and have done nothing.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;You want to drum me out of the Progressive movement for saying this? Go ahead. But I will not stand by and say nothing about this issue any longer. It is time to distance the Women&#x2019;s March from the Nation of Islam. Decisively.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;This is where the real work of a progressive intersectional coalition gets done. If you are going to take up the mantle of the People, you have to be for all of us.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Throughout the Middle East, gay, lesbian and transgender people face formidable obstacles to living a life of openness and acceptance in conservative societies.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Although Jordan decriminalized same-sex behavior in 1951, the gay community remains marginalized. Qatar, Sudan, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://lgbt-rights-hrw.silk.co/&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;all outlaw same-sex relations&#x3C;/a&#x3E;. In Saudi Arabia, homosexuality can be punished by flogging or death.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;In &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.amnesty.org.uk/actions/egypt-end-homophobic-persecution&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;Egypt&#x3C;/a&#x3E;, at least 76 people have been arrested in a crackdown since September, when a fan waved a rainbow flag during a concert by Mashrou&#x2019; Leila, a Lebanese band with an openly gay singer.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;If there is one exception, it has been Lebanon. While the law can still penalize homosexual acts, Lebanese society has slowly grown more tolerant as activists have worked for more rights and visibility.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;While I grew up in the Bay Area, I now live in Washington, D.C., with my husband and kids. Professionally and personally, being a little person is central to who I am, but it&#x27;s also one among many ways that I see and make sense of the world. For better and for worse, being different is hugely significant in my life, individually and with my family. And I think we should be more open with all kids about how being different can be a good thing, an important thing.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;The Trump Administration is getting into the holiday spirit by pushing a new regulation that would let restaurant owners steal workers&#x2019; tips, taking an estimated $5.8 billion out of minimum wage workers&#x2019; pockets.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Earlier this month, the Department of Labor released a proposed tip-stealing rule that would allow restaurants to mandate tipped workers, like restaurant servers or hotel bartenders, to share those earnings with non-tipped owners, like dish washers and cooks. Pooling tips allows restaurants to pay their &#x201C;back of the house&#x201D; employees less, potentially re-classifying these employees as tipped workers who can be legally paid less than minimum wage. That&#x2019;s not even the worst part.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;According to an analysis by the Economic Policy Institute, the tip-stealing rule would allow restaurant owners to confiscate the tips earned by waiters and waitresses, but it doesn&#x2019;t include a requirement that employers distribute those pooled tips back to any of their employees. In other words, under the proposed rule, employers could distribute tips to kitchen staff &#x2014; but they could also just pocket them.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;A woman on a repair crew was deliberately stranded on top of a 200-foot wind turbine by her male co-workers after enduring months of lewd taunts. Men dropped tools on female co-workers or deliberately turned on electrical power when they began working on lines.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Sexual harassment has been endemic in blue-collar workplaces from the moment that women entered them and continues to this day, according to interviews with more than a dozen employment lawyers, academics and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission workers, as well as dozens of women who described such incidents. More than 80 women in these fields responded to a call for accounts of sexual harassment. They, along with several others interviewed, cited sustained, even dangerous, abuse in workplaces from &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://nyti.ms/2oLFdpI&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;factories&#x3C;/a&#x3E; to shipyards, mines to construction sites.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Anna Muzychuk, of Ukraine, turned down the chance to travel to the event despite modest signs of reform in the kingdom under the young &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/oct/24/i-will-return-saudi-arabia-moderate-islam-crown-prince&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman&#x3C;/a&#x3E;.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x201C;Exactly one year ago I won these two titles and was about the happiest person in the chess world but this time I feel really bad,&#x201D; said Muzychuk. &#x201C;I am ready to stand for my principles and skip the event, where in five days I was expected to earn more than I do in a dozen of events combined.&#x201D;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>some pre-Thanksgiving $27 Quotes</title>

<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Welcome once again to a&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#xA0;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/user/27%20Dollars&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;$27-group&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#xA0;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;/&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#xA0;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/user/The%20Political%20Revolution/history&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;Political Revolution&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#xA0;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;open thread &#x2014; &#xA0;a weekly place where you can sit back, relax, and enjoy some inspiring quotes, good music, and (most importantly) a picture or three of Noble Fur.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;I wasn&#x2019;t able to post last weekend, so there are no crypto-quote answers to post this week; and I&#x2019;m pressed for time and running late (as usual) this weekend, so no new crypto-quotes tonight &#x2014; all tonight&#x2019;s quotes will be in plain text and easy to read.&#xA0; For those who don&#x2019;t like solving codes, that could be something to be thankful for.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>$27 Quotes</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2017/10/22/1708906/--27-Quotes</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Welcome once again to a&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#xA0;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/user/27%20Dollars&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;$27-group&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#xA0;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;/&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#xA0;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/user/The%20Political%20Revolution/history&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;Political Revolution&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#xA0;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;open thread &#x2014; &#xA0;a weekly place where you can sit back, relax, and enjoy some inspiring quotes, good music, and (most importantly) a picture or two of Noble Fur.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I&#x2019;m running late again this week, and expect to be running even later next week, so not much time for cryptograms this week. But there are lots of good unencrypted quotes lying around. For instance:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;When you adopt from a shelter, it&#x2019;s not just dogs and cats who are rescued.&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;~ &#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;Wiley Miller&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;You can see that quote in color, as well as some more political quotes, in tonight&#x2019;s diary.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>So What&#x27;s the Truth About Sanders and the Women&#x27;s March Convention?</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2017/10/12/1706462/-So-What-s-the-Truth-About-Sanders-and-the-Women-s-March-Convention</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;There&#x2019;s an &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2017/10/12/1706364/-Bernie-Giving-the-Opening-Speech-at-the-Women-s-March-Convention-eye-roll&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;oh-so-helpful pie fight diary&#x3C;/a&#x3E; on the wreck list that claims Senator Sanders has been invited to &#x201C;give the opening speech&#x201D; at the Women&#x2019;s March Convention. Other comments to the diary claim it is the &#x201C;keynote address&#x201D; he was invited to give.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I took this at face value and opined in comments that this was wrong. The opening speech and keynote address should clearly be delivered by women. But I also opined that there&#x2019;s nothing wrong with Sanders filling a speaking slot at some other point. At least some folks in that pie fight agreed with that.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;But on&#xA0;following the links to the announcement, I can&#x2019;t find anything that says Sanders was actually invited to give either the opening speech or the keynote address. The &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.womensconvention.com/speakers.html&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;speaker page&#x3C;/a&#x3E; on the website shows 37 women and two men including Sanders. It does not say what time-slot he has. The twitter announcement:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;dk-editor-embed center-block&#x22; data-twitter-content=&#x27;&#x26;amp;lt;blockquote class=&#x22;twitter-tweet&#x22;&#x26;amp;gt;&#x26;amp;lt;p lang=&#x22;en&#x22; dir=&#x22;ltr&#x22;&#x26;amp;gt;We are so excited to have &#x26;amp;lt;a href=&#x22;https://twitter.com/SenSanders?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&#x22;&#x26;amp;gt;@SenSanders&#x26;amp;lt;/a&#x26;amp;gt; join us at the &#x26;amp;lt;a href=&#x22;https://twitter.com/hashtag/WomensConvention?src=hash&#x26;amp;amp;amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&#x22;&#x26;amp;gt;#WomensConvention&#x26;amp;lt;/a&#x26;amp;gt; October 27-29th in Detroit! &#x26;amp;lt;a href=&#x22;https://t.co/UssiTSe2IN&#x22;&#x26;amp;gt;https://t.co/UssiTSe2IN&#x26;amp;lt;/a&#x26;amp;gt;&#x26;amp;lt;/p&#x26;amp;gt;&#x26;amp;amp;mdash; Women&#x26;amp;amp;#39;s March (@womensmarch) &#x26;amp;lt;a href=&#x22;https://twitter.com/womensmarch/status/918455388357488640?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&#x22;&#x26;amp;gt;October 12, 2017&#x26;amp;lt;/a&#x26;amp;gt;&#x26;amp;lt;/blockquote&#x26;amp;gt;
&#x27;&#x3E;&#x3C;div class=&#x22;remove-embed-content&#x22;&#x3E;x&#x3C;/div&#x3E;&#x3C;blockquote class=&#x22;twitter-tweet&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;p&#x3E;We are so excited to have &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://twitter.com/SenSanders?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&#x22;&#x3E;@SenSanders&#x3C;/a&#x3E; join us at the &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://twitter.com/hashtag/WomensConvention?src=hash&#x26;amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&#x22;&#x3E;#WomensConvention&#x3C;/a&#x3E; October 27-29th in Detroit! &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://t.co/UssiTSe2IN&#x22;&#x3E;https://t.co/UssiTSe2IN&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;&#x2014; Women&#x27;s March (@womensmarch) &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://twitter.com/womensmarch/status/918455388357488640?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&#x22;&#x3E;October 12, 2017&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;only says Sanders will &#x201C;join us&#x201D; at the convention.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;And the&#xA0;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2017/10/12/bernie-sanders-speech-womens-convention/756825001/&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;USA Today article&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#xA0;linked in comments only says he is speaking on opening night, not that he has either position of honor in the speaking order.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;If there is some direct evidence that he was invited to either give the opening speech or the keynote address I&#x2019;d like to see it. Otherwise I think we&#x2019;re again due for some self-reflection around here as to what knee-jerk reactions we have and how we jump to possibly wrong conclusions. Also some self-reflection on whether falling for pie fight bait is useful or productive. We need unity. But there seem to be a lot of people who are dead-set on preventing unity.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2017/10/12/1706364/-Bernie-Giving-the-Opening-Speech-at-the-Women-s-March-Convention-eye-roll</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I mean, c&#x2019;mon.&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;There are so many kickass, hard working, articulate and brilliant women working to make our lives better out there.&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Dude called PP &#x201C;the establishment&#x201D; just last year.&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;He said HRC was &#x201C;unqualified&#x201D; to be president and ran a campaign that basically characterized her as an &#x201C;unqualified&#x201D; corporate whore for months and months. There wasn&#x2019;t enough difference in their policy ideas so he had to shit on her personally. It didn&#x2019;t work as he lost, but the effects were felt.&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Where I live in Wisco he won overwhelmingly in the primaries.&#xA0;I couldn&#x2019;t look at FB last year without a local &#x201C;progressive&#x201D; calling her a neoliberal bitch...so many refused to vote for her. But we&#x2019;re&#xA0;&#xA0;supposed to listen to his precious thoughts on Women&#x2019;s Issues? We&#x2019;re supposed to be inspired to take on leadership roles by...Bernie?&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I am in total agreement with all the enraged commenters on FB.&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;There are two times as many Dem men than Dem women in the House and Senate for a reason. It is b/c women don&#x2019;t have the chance to run for office, they are too busy being the primary childcare parent, doing housework and supporting their families financially. Liberal men don&#x2019;t often make space for women to succeed in politics. Right now we have a cultural moment and momentum for women in leadership. Disappointed in the organizers of this event as they clearly missed the mark.&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Prog Media Host Thom Hartmann Shuts Down Criticism of #BLM Tactics, As AA Callers Defend Bernie</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/8/13/1411584/-Prog-Media-Host-Thom-Hartmann-Shuts-Down-Criticism-of-BLM-Tactics-As-AA-Callers-Defend-Bernie</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;For What It&#x27;s Worth, everybody should stop and &#x3C;em&#x3E;listen&#x3C;/em&#x3E; to what&#x27;s going down. It&#x27;s my view that the kerfuffle over the latest #BlackLivesMatter/Bernie Sanders media-concocted controversy will die down, because soon enough we will begin listening to one another, instead of finger-pointing accusations, bickering and tone deaf resentments. And as we start respectfully listening to one another, both coalitions will strengthen around one another, I believe, into the kind of bonded democratic socialist movement dreamed of by the previous civil rights movement. I&#x27;ve attended my share of #BLM panels, plenaries &#x26;nbsp;and discussions; I have no doubt the current movement gets it completely.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;On the media side, Thom Hartmann in my view is one of the most intelligent and well-rounded but moreover fair-minded, courteous and even-tempered hosts on radio or tv. It&#x27;s a pity he isn&#x27;t as well known as the talking heads on cable tv; he&#x27;s head and shoulders above all the Sunday morning and evening cable network shows.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;First, Hartmann shuts down a caller alluding to &#x22;those people&#x22; being part of &#x22;Friends of Hillary/Let&#x27;s Make Bernie Look Bad.&#x22; All the hoopla on progressive blogs surrounding this incident, Hartmann said, was a &#x22;reflexive white person&#x27;s response, not understanding that black people in this country have suffered for 400 years of genocide and the murders continue...and continue in much larger ways too, all the ruined lives, and suicides, and lost potential and lost opportunities, couldn&#x27;t into college and couldn&#x27;t get that job - all because of the color of their skin.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;He also defended their tactics, using the analogy of the Act Up movement in the 80&#x27;s, who similarly used confrontational means. Take a listen to the whole segment:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;iframe width=&#x22;560&#x22; height=&#x22;315&#x22; src=&#x22;http://www.youtube.com/embed/OdByuamfWOk&#x22; frameborder=&#x22;0&#x22; defang_allowfullscreen=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/iframe&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;It should be stated though many of you probably know, Hartmann has been hosting a Brunch With Bernie segment every Friday for years. He&#x27;s a staunch Democrat who supports the party, and will with Clinton, whom he calls a great candidate too (though I heartily disagree).&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Then, a self-identified African-American caller from Detroit, &#x22;who&#x27;s heavily involved with politics in Michigan,&#x22; had this to say:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x22;This whole issue of BlackLivesMatter (and Bernie) is causing a lot of confusion within the African-American community, based upon the kind of racist or insensitivity to AA&#x27;s concerns that they try to picture Bernie about being that type of person. I think it&#x27;s very important that AA&#x27;s get more involved in looking at the total issues instead of trying to characterize him as someone who&#x27;s insensitive to race and doesn&#x27;t have a clue...I&#x27;m 100% behind Bernie without trying to bring down Hillary; it&#x27;s nothing like that.&#x22;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;iframe width=&#x22;560&#x22; height=&#x22;315&#x22; src=&#x22;http://www.youtube.com/embed/r5IAq49zyFg&#x22; frameborder=&#x22;0&#x22; defang_allowfullscreen=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/iframe&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x22;Protest can be rude,&#x22; says another African-American Bernie supporter, but it&#x27;s reflective of an undercurrent that has come to the fore and must be reckoned with before it boils over.&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;iframe width=&#x22;560&#x22; height=&#x22;315&#x22; src=&#x22;http://www.youtube.com/embed/IdV5hMbgXSM&#x22; frameborder=&#x22;0&#x22; defang_allowfullscreen=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/iframe&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;And then another caller, who disagrees with the tactic in Seattle and has some words for the Clintons and their involvement in ruining black lives: &#x22;I mean, Bernie&#x27;s for everything African-Americans want, the minimum wage, this that and the other thing, I could go on and on.&#x22;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;iframe width=&#x22;560&#x22; height=&#x22;315&#x22; src=&#x22;http://www.youtube.com/embed/mT6PpxP5fKM&#x22; frameborder=&#x22;0&#x22; defang_allowfullscreen=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/iframe&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;But what I&#x27;ve really noticed missing from Daily Kos&#x3C;/strong&#x3E; are actual #BlackLivesMatter voices. There&#x27;s a real dearth of new radical black voices here and it shows in times like these. It is in this spirit that I submit some of the following discussions (which I had the privilege of attending in person). We&#x27;re not hearing these voices on mainstream media so it should be incumbent on us that we ought to be considering doing a better job with that here.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;So please consider spending some time with the following clips:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;(These panels are from the Left Forum 2015. As usual it held a great many excellent discussions, but with a clear and distinct emphasis this year on the black struggle in America and the emerging movements, and attracted many activist leaders, as well as family members of the most well-known who&#x27;s children were murdered by the police.)&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;This panel is called &#x22;Outcomes for the &#x27;Black Lives Matter&#x27; Movement and Progressive Empowerment &#x2013; Insights of Black Women Activists,&#x22; and features Jim Vrettos from John Jay&#x27;s Sociology Department, Carmen Perez, the Executive Director of The Gathering for Justice, Danny Aguilar of the Union Theological Seminary, Tamika Mallory, the Executive Director of National Action Network, Sabaah Jordan, and organizer and advocate and the Reverend Osagyefo Sekou, from the Fellowship of Reconciliation.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;The personal stories shared here are deeply moving and profound, and a take on a broad range of philosophy, experience and tactics generated by the BlackLivesMatter movement, from on the ground.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;iframe width=&#x22;420&#x22; height=&#x22;315&#x22; src=&#x22;http://www.youtube.com/embed/PtpydB6r0QE&#x22; frameborder=&#x22;0&#x22; defang_allowfullscreen=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/iframe&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;And Part 2, a must-see also:&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;iframe width=&#x22;420&#x22; height=&#x22;315&#x22; src=&#x22;http://www.youtube.com/embed/REEtSITGTro&#x22; frameborder=&#x22;0&#x22; defang_allowfullscreen=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/iframe&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;This one was called &#x22;Liberation Politics in the Post Obama World,&#x22; hosted by Black Agenda Report. It&#x27;s an incisive view into the realities of the struggle of black radicals under a black president.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;iframe width=&#x22;560&#x22; height=&#x22;315&#x22; src=&#x22;http://www.youtube.com/embed/PHX7JgVWTYE&#x22; frameborder=&#x22;0&#x22; defang_allowfullscreen=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/iframe&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;And for extra credit and the more radical among us, I leave you with &#x22;Beyond Democracy, Capitalism, and Scarcity: The Possibilities of a Natural Law-Resource Based Economy.&#x22;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;iframe width=&#x22;560&#x22; height=&#x22;315&#x22; src=&#x22;http://www.youtube.com/embed/NipG3Eu75qY&#x22; frameborder=&#x22;0&#x22; defang_allowfullscreen=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/iframe&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;As Hartmann says, &#x22;as white people we have got to get that understanding. When for 400 years you&#x27;ve been ignored, and you disrupt one political event? Big deal...You&#x27;ve got legitimacy.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;We can use with a lot more progressive white voices like his that clearly get it.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;But more importantly we&#x27;re not hearing enough voices from those on the ground.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;I hope I&#x27;ve given a bit of both, for our edification. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
(For What It&#x27;s Worth, Public Enemy with Stephen Stills: &#x22;it might feel good, it might sound a little somethin&#x27;, but fuck the game if it aint&#x27; sayin&#x27; nothin&#x27;&#x22;)&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;iframe width=&#x22;420&#x22; height=&#x22;315&#x22; src=&#x22;http://www.youtube.com/embed/7FmPskTljo0&#x22; frameborder=&#x22;0&#x22; defang_allowfullscreen=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/iframe&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
