<title>Shared Ideological Ground Between The Militia Movement and the Tea Party</title>

<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;I&#x27;m sure some very smart person has written about this topic and I didn&#x27;t see it. &#x26;nbsp;What the heck, I&#x27;ll plunge boldly ahead.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Manuel Castells&#x27; three volume study &#x3C;em&#x3E;The Information Age: Economy, Society and Culture&#x3C;/em&#x3E; includes a section, in volume two, &#x3C;em&#x3E;The Power of Identity&#x3C;/em&#x3E;, discussing the militia movement. &#x26;nbsp;Castells discusses the ideology, values and roots of the militia movement. &#x26;nbsp;The following quotes from &#x3C;em&#x3E;The Power of Identity&#x3C;/em&#x3E; describe the Militia Movement:&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Why Won&#x27;t the Teapartiers Stand up for Occupy Wallstreet?</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/11/19/1038208/-Why-Won-t-the-Teapartiers-Stand-up-for-Occupy-Wallstreet</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;As I watch the multitude of videos on the internet chronicling egregious acts of police brutality against Occupy WallStreet protesters around the county, I find myself wondering, &#x201C;where is the tea party?&#x201D; It seems that their worries about the &#x201C;jack booted thugs&#x201D; of the government are well founded when one witnesses the behavior of the police around the country. So where are the tea partiers defending our liberties? Aren&#x2019;t they all about protecting the rights of Americans? &#x26;nbsp;Logically, standing up to defend the OWS movement against police brutality would seem right up the tea party alley.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Tea Party Anti-Founders</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/8/3/1002705/-Tea-Party-Anti-Founders</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;Throughout the unnecessary and destructive debt-ceiling fiasco we&#x2019;ve experienced over the past few months, expressions of bafflement about the Tea Party fanatics have recurred. Essentially, the expressions amount to a puzzled lament about whether Tea Partyists know what they&#x2019;re doing.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;Quite bluntly, the response is: Yes, they know what they&#x2019;re doing; yes, they know the consequences; and yes, those consequences are what they&#x2019;re after. Which still leaves open the &#x201C;why.&#x201D;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;The reason for the ongoing intransigence of Tea Partyists and their Republican fellow travelers became clearer to me months ago when I realized that, for all their declarations about and paeans to constitutional originalism or strict construction or The Founders&#x2019; intent or &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gadsden_flag&#x22; title=&#x22;Gadsden flag&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;Gadsden flagism&#x3C;/a&#x3E;, the answer to &#x201C;why&#x201D; lies not in parsing The Founders&#x27; sentiments, but in an opposing source: &#x3C;i&#x3E;The Anti-Federalist Papers&#x3C;/i&#x3E;, available online (&#x3C;i&#x3E;e.g.&#x3C;/i&#x3E;, &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://thisnation.com/library/antifederalist/index.html&#x22; title=&#x22;The Anti-Federalist Papers&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;here&#x3C;/a&#x3E;, &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.utulsa.edu/law/classes/rice/constitutional/antifederalist/antifed.htm&#x22; title=&#x22;The Anti-Federalist Papers&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;here&#x3C;/a&#x3E;, &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://thefederalistpapers.org/anti-federalist-papers&#x22; title=&#x22;The Anti-Federalist Papers&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;here&#x3C;/a&#x3E;, and &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://constitution.org/afp.htm&#x22; title=&#x22;The Anti-Federalist Papers&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;here&#x3C;/a&#x3E;), in print (&#x3C;i&#x3E;e.g.&#x3C;/i&#x3E;, &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.loa.org/volume.jsp?RequestID=32&#x22; title=&#x22;Library of America - The Debate on the Constitution: Part One: September 1787 to February 1788: Federalist and Anti-Federalist Speeches, Articles, and Letters During the Struggle over Ratification&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;here&#x3C;/a&#x3E;, &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.loa.org/volume.jsp?RequestID=33&#x22; title=&#x22;Library of America - The Debate on the Constitution: Part Two: January to August 1788: Federalist and Anti-Federalist Speeches, Articles, and Letters During the Struggle over Ratification&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;here&#x3C;/a&#x3E;, &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/110335.The_Essential_Federalist_and_Anti_Federalist_Papers&#x22; title=&#x22;The Essential Federalist and Anti-Federalist Papers&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;here&#x3C;/a&#x3E;, and &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.betterworldbooks.com/the-anti-federalist-papers-and-the-constitutional-convention-debates-id-0451528840.aspx&#x22; title=&#x22;The Anti-Federalist Papers and the Constitutional Convention Debates&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;here&#x3C;/a&#x3E;), in e-book (&#x3C;i&#x3E;e.g.&#x3C;/i&#x3E;, &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://books.google.com/books/about/The_essential_Federalist_and_anti_Federa.html?id=FxcN75XdGjkC&#x22; title=&#x22;eBook - The Essential Federalist and Anti-Federalist Papers&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;here&#x3C;/a&#x3E;), and in audiobook (&#x3C;i&#x3E;e.g.&#x3C;/i&#x3E;, &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://librivox.org/the-anti-federalist-papers-by-patrick-henry/&#x22; title=&#x22;audiobook - The Anti-Federalist Papers&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;here&#x3C;/a&#x3E; and &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.booksshouldbefree.com/book/the-anti-federalist-papers-by-patrick-henry&#x22; title=&#x22;audiobook - The Anti-Federalist Papers&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;here&#x3C;/a&#x3E;). Filtering the modern Tea Party through &#x3C;i&#x3E;The Anti-Federalist Papers&#x3C;/i&#x3E; rather than through The Founders yields, in my view, a better understanding of our current dilemmas and frustrations: the Tea Partyists are, essentially, carrying on the fight of those who, long ago, urged rejection of the Constitution itself. If your political DNA derives from the Anti-Founders and the Anti-Constitutionalists, why would intransigence and the diminution, possibly even the destruction, of the constitutional regime look like a problem to you? In the Tea Partyist world, intransigence, diminution, and destruction qualify as a feature, not a bug.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp; &#x26;nbsp; &#x3C;i&#x3E;Postscript&#x3C;/i&#x3E;: In looking for online versions of &#x3C;i&#x3E;The Anti-Federalist Papers&#x3C;/i&#x3E;, I was struck by the political tenor of the sources that popped up high in the search results: at best, an occasional neutral academic site, but mostly sites with a clear rightward tilt. None of the sites appeared to reflect a progressive or liberal or even modestly left-leaning viewpoint. So where are our one-stop repositories of historical documents competing with repositories hosted by right-wing authoritarian centers? We need repositories that (if hosted by popular sites like Daily Kos or a consortium of like-minded sites) will rise high in the search results and provide ready access to not only well-known documents, but to sources that reveal important threads of American history that too many people have forgotten or never learned and that right-wing autocrats and plutocrats would happily consign to the &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memory_hole&#x22; title=&#x22;memory hole&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;memory hole&#x3C;/a&#x3E;. A project &#x2014; a Library for a Real America &#x2014; for the next Netroots Nation to ponder, perhaps?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Schadenfreude is fine, but remember the bigger picture </title>

<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Let me begin by stating that I do not mean to be alarmist, I do not want to make people scared unnecessarily and I will not deny people the pleasures of &#x3C;em&#x3E;Schadenfreude&#x3C;/em&#x3E; at the misery that the Republicans have inflicted upon themselves.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;While campaigning with Senator John McCain today in Meza, Arizona, Sarah Palin &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/03/27/palin-heckled-at-mccain-r_n_515863.html&#x22;&#x3E;was interrupted&#x3C;/a&#x3E; by a heckler, but he was quickly overwhelmed by the roar of the crowd and eventually escorted from the rally.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Teabaggers Spending Their &#x22;Grassroots&#x22; Money on The Hate Boat!</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/2/5/834066/-Teabaggers-Spending-Their-Grassroots-Money-on-The-Hate-Boat</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I don&#x27;t ever watch CNN. &#x26;nbsp;But listening to Eugene Robinson stammering for a point on Morning Joe forced me over to the republican slanted network for a few minutes. &#x26;nbsp;(Mind you, I think Eugene is a literary genius, but he just can&#x27;t sew a sentence together on live TV without stumbling for a full 15 seconds first.) &#x26;nbsp;While I was there, I heard a report about a new, so-called &#x22;Teapartier Convention&#x22; that occurred recently on the high seas. &#x26;nbsp;And they loved their little Bag Voyage so much, its coordinator, Alan Keyes will be doing it again.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
