<title>SNLC, Vol. DCCXI / UDKCJ 70: Angels in STL Edition</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2019/9/14/1885506/-SNLC-Vol-DCCXI-UDKCJ-70-Angels-in-STL-Edition</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Last week, The Repertory Theatre of Saint Louis began its new season with its first-ever production of Tony Kushner&#x27;s Angels in America, the first time that the Rep has ever staged it. &#xA0;It also marks the start of the tenure of &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.repstl.org/about/hana&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;Hana S. Sharif&#x3C;/a&#x3E; as the Rep&#x27;s new artistic director, newly transplanted from Baltimore. &#xA0;So when it comes to getting started, you can&#x27;t accuse Sharif of thinking small.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p class=&#x22;is-empty-p&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;Angels in America&#x3C;/em&#x3E; is one of those theatrical works that is such a cultural touchstone, with respect to the treatment of homosexuals in &#x27;Amurrika&#x27;, and the AIDS hysteria of the 1980s during the time of Rap Master Ronnie. &#xA0;Since self the loser has never read the play, seen the HBO version of it, or seen a complete production, going to the Rep to see &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.repstl.org/events/detail/angels-in-america-parts-one-and-two&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;their production&#x3C;/a&#x3E; was a no-brainer, so to speak. &#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p class=&#x22;is-empty-p&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The word &#x22;complete&#x22; in the last sentence is a key here, though. &#xA0;This is because 3CM did see a while back the HD-cinema presentation of &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://ntlive.nationaltheatre.org.uk/productions/61491-angels-in-america-part-two-perestroika&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;Part II (&#x27;Perestroika&#x27;) of the National Theatre production&#x3C;/a&#x3E; of &#x3C;em&#x3E;Angels in America&#x3C;/em&#x3E;.&#xA0; However, self the loser did not see Part I because of a scheduling conflict at the time. &#xA0;I had asked some acquaintances about how it would be to see Part II without having seen Part I (&#x27;Millennium Approaches&#x27;). &#xA0;The gist of the replies was that one could see Part II and enjoy it on its own, but Part II makes a lot more sense with knowledge of Part I, perhaps stating the ridiculously obvious. &#xA0;I remember the performance of Part II from the National Theatre as being very good (this is British theater, after all). &#xA0;But now, having seen the entire production over 2 separate visits to the Rep, it became abundantly clear that one has to see both parts, in sequence, to appreciate the strands of the story and themes in full (or at least as full as one run-through can give).&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p class=&#x22;is-empty-p&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The thing about the Rep is that it is not based in the city of St. Louis, but at Webster University in Webster Groves, in the suburbs (albeit not too far from the city line). &#xA0;So there&#x27;s more than an element of safe, suburban, white-bread-ness about the organization, the setting, and the general atmosphere. &#xA0;While the Loretto-Hilton Center for the Performing Arts, the theater where the Rep is based, is indeed on a college campus, college students were exactly overflowing in the crowd, although there were some (no doubt Webster U.) students present at each show. &#xA0;Likewise, the audience was pretty much white and skewed older. &#xA0;There was a shudder of recognition towards the end when, as part of the video montage of late 1980&#x27;s TV footage around the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall, a fleeting glimpse of the Evil One appeared, from an &#x3C;em&#x3E;Inside Edition&#x3C;/em&#x3E; video clip (no voice, though, thank the FSM). &#xA0;However, to give equal mention of douchebags on both sides politically (without mentioning names), the script also briefly mentions the director of &#x3C;em&#x3E;Annie Hall&#x3C;/em&#x3E;. &#xA0;In fact, the portrayal of Louis in the play can almost be seen as a parody of said film director, in terms of the rather whiny self-flagellating nature of Louis, at least in this portrayal by Ben Cherry. &#xA0;That didn&#x2019;t hit me as much when I saw the National Theatre HD-cast, with a very different actor, James McArdle.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p class=&#x22;is-empty-p&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;For star-gazers who didn&#x27;t click through to the Rep&#x27;s page on the production and looked at the cast list, notable names in the case include Meredith Baxter, probably best known as Alex Keaton&#x27;s mom on Family Ties, and Barrett Foa, known as Eric Beale on &#x3C;em&#x3E;NCIS: Los Angeles&#x3C;/em&#x3E; (which self the loser has never seen). &#xA0;A highway billboard illustrates, literally, this point, as Instagrammed by Valeri Mudek here (VM is Harper Pitt in this production). &#xA0;MB certainly had more name recognition for me, even though I didn&#x27;t watch &#x3C;em&#x3E;Family Ties&#x3C;/em&#x3E; with any regularity. &#xA0;However, I didn&#x27;t know that MB had come out years ago. &#xA0;At least 3 members of the cast are gay to my certain knowledge, the 3&#x3C;sup&#x3E;rd&#x3C;/sup&#x3E; being Peter Frechette as Roy Cohn, and PF has a whale of a time playing said disgusting scumbag (no surprise that Cohn was affiliated with the disgusting Bernie-bro-enabled treasonous scumbag ensconced at 1600 PA Ave. now). &#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p class=&#x22;is-empty-p&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;But speaking of treason and condoning interference by Russia in US matter, the play still does kind of soft-pedal the fact that Ethel Rosenberg (played also by Meredith Baxter, as per Kushner&#x2019;s actor assignments) was a traitor who did pass US documents to the enemy, even if in terms of legal procedure, Cohn fatally hosed her. &#xA0;Ironically, Cohn exhibited the same fanaticism, trashing of rules of decent conduct, and ruthlessness, from the other ideological side, that the USSR used when liquidating its &#x2018;enemies&#x2019;; birds of a common rotten feather, it seems. &#xA0;But it&#x2019;s understandable that Kushner would want to use Ethel Rosenberg as a cudgel with which fictionally to beat up on Roy Cohn.&#xA0; The further irony is that had she been sentenced to life imprisonment, rather than executed, she might well have ended up as much less of martyr historically.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p class=&#x22;is-empty-p&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Given that past productions have engaged in some spectacle (especially with respect to angels crashing the party, so to speak), the Rep mostly avoided major pyrotechnics, with the focus on the actors and thus the people, rather than stagecraft. &#xA0;For example, the National Theatre production showed an elaborate stage vision of Heaven as Prior Walter meets the various angels towards the end of Part II. &#xA0;At the Rep, there was just an old-fashioned 1940s era radio with mock BBC Radio-style voices talking about Chernobyl, and the other 7 actors as the angels circling around Prior Walter, as the stage turntable itself spun (the one use of &#x201C;stage trickery&#x201D;). &#xA0;So although this is an epic-length piece of theater, it&#x2019;s an intimate epic as it spools out the relationships between the various characters.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p class=&#x22;is-empty-p&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;In keeping with the epic theme, the Rep is offering seven &#x201C;Marathon Days&#x201D;, with both parts of the play performed in one day. &#xA0;This is primarily a marathon for the actors, of course, since the actors have to do the really hard work. &#xA0;The audience simply has to show up and listen attentively, with cell phones off. &#xA0;No, 3CM won&#x2019;t do a Marathon Day, since he has already seen both parts on separate days (yes, bad boy on carbon footprint there, even if the drive there for me isn&#x2019;t all that long, &#x26;lt;10 miles). &#xA0;But for those audience members who show up for a Marathon Day (or on separate days), good for them.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p class=&#x22;is-empty-p&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;With that, you can either:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;ol&#x3E;
	&#x3C;li&#x3E;Discuss the subject on hand (good luck to 3CM with that, of course). &#xA0;Or:&#x3C;/li&#x3E;
	&#x3C;li&#x3E;Observe the standard SNLC protocol.&#x3C;/li&#x3E;
&#x3C;/ol&#x3E;

&#x3C;p class=&#x22;is-empty-p&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Since the play does have varying degrees of loserness, maybe putting the two choices above together isn&#x2019;t so difficult&#x2026;.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Queen of the Dead-Enders</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2016/3/30/1508104/-Queen-of-the-Dead-Enders</link>
<description>&#x3C;div&#x3E;It was more than a little dismaying to watch one of my all-time favorite actresses, Susan Sarandon, mouth&#xA0;proto-Leninist nonsense about how if her man Bernie Sanders lost the Democratic nomination she&#x27;d rather Trump than Hillary in November because a Trump win would accelerate a progressive revolution. &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.msnbc.com/all-in/watch/extended-interview-with-susan-sarandon-653901891895&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;Chris Hayes&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#xA0;was visibly stunned by such a witless claim coming from someone seemingly so bright. His next guest,&#xA0;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.towleroad.com/2016/03/dan-savage-susan-sarandon/&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;Dan Savage&#x3C;/a&#x3E;, immediately jumped on her comment. Rightly identifying himself as a staunch Bernie&#xA0;supporter (he had dinged Hillary quite seriously when she made her comments about Nancy Reagan starting a national conversation about AIDS), Savage still said if it comes down to Hillary vs. Trump in November he&#x27;s voting for Hillary because even a choice of lesser evils results in less evil. He also called Sarandon on the dubious historical support for her claim that voting in a&#xA0;megalomaniacal&#xA0;strongman ever is a good thing for progressive politics. Last night Pulitzer Prize winning playwright&#xA0;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.msnbc.com/all-in/watch/tony-kushner-on-clinton-and-susan-sarandon-654667331754&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;Tony Kushner&#x3C;/a&#x3E; also registered his bafflement over her comments.&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div&#x3E;I have family and friends I love and respect who are ardent Bernie&#xA0;supporters&#x2026;and, hell, if he defies gravity and beats Hillary in big primary states to come by the margins he&#x27;s beating her in small&#xA0;caucus states, I may end up voting for him myself in June. I&#x27;m also confident that Bernie Sanders, an&#xA0;honorable man, will do everything in his power to deliver those 74% of his voters who tell exit pollsters&#xA0;that&#xA0;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.vox.com/2016/3/28/11319720/bernie-or-bust-sanders&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;they will support Hillary&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#xA0;if she&#x27;s the nominee. But every cause has its dead-enders, and unfortunately Susan Sarandon has&#xA0;chosen to make her very pretty puss the face of the Sanders dead-enders...so this one&#x27;s for her (with apologies to Carly Simon).&#xA0;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;You walk into the Party like you&#x2019;ve been a Dem since just a tot&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;Your rage strategically dipped below Trumpism&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;Your scorn it was still quite hot&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;You had one eye on Hillary&#x2019;s neck as you schemed to garrotte&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;And all the Dems dreamed that you&#x27;d be their partner&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;You&#x2019;d be their partner, and...&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;You&#x27;re so vain, you probably think this election&#x2019;s about you&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;You&#x27;re so vain, I&#x27;ll bet you think this election&#x2019;s about you&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;Don&#x27;t you? Don&#x27;t You?&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;You had me several years ago when I was still quite naive&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;You said we&#x2019;d make history with Ralph Nader&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;And that we would never grieve&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;But we gave away votes that mattered and got George Bush instead&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;I had some dreams, they were clouds in my coffee&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;Clouds in my coffee, and...&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;You&#x27;re so vain, you probably think this election&#x2019;s about you&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;You&#x27;re so vain, I&#x27;ll bet you think this election&#x2019;s about you&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;Well I hear you went up to the caucus states and your man naturally won&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;Then you drove your Prius to Burlington, Vermont&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;To see the Bernie eclipse of the sun&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;Well you&#x27;re where you should be all the time&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;Except in November&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;You&#x27;re so vain, you probably think this election&#x2019;s about you&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;AlignCenter&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;You&#x27;re so vain, I&#x27;ll bet you think this election&#x2019;s about you&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

<title>Brothers and Sisters: A Defense of Agnosticism</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/5/27/1095179/-Brothers-and-Sisters-A-Defense-of-Agnosticism</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;For economic reasons, I am contemplating a 2,000-mile relocation. Such a thing would have been unthinkable only a few months ago, and here I am, investing considerable time and money to make it happen. I have only ever lived within two hours of the hospital where I was born. &#x26;nbsp;I am a little nobody, and I may well leave the only home I have ever known. I am in my 40s. If I relocate, it will be tantamount to dying out of one life and being born into another.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;We tend to invoke God at extreme moments. This is true even if God doesn&#x2019;t figure much in our consciousness otherwise. Whether they pray, people often curse, mouthing names of the Almighty, when big, unfathomable things happen to them, when catastrophes befall, when there are personally cataclysmic shifts of any kind. The general principle that people who are normally not so interested in religion, tap the Divine when they face something huge, may explain why I have been thinking about God with uncommon frequency and urgency these days.&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;Welcome to Brothers and Sisters, the weekly meetup for prayer* and community at Daily Kos. &#x26;nbsp;We put an asterisk on pray* to acknowledge that not everyone uses conventional religious language, but may want to share joys and concerns, or simply take solace in a meditative atmosphere. Anyone who comes in the spirit of mutual respect, warmth and healing is welcome.&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;

<title>Vows Taken Before an Angel</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/10/31/1031736/-Vows-Taken-Before-an-Angel</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;I witnessed a wedding yesterday. I didn&#x27;t actually know any members of the wedding party but it was one emotional ceremony that marked the joy in the fact that equal rights is coming to America. I saw a great deal of significance in the Angel Bethesda bearing witness.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f28/edc3/Central%20Park/DSC_8849.jpg&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;img width=&#x22;600&#x22; src=&#x22;http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f28/edc3/Central%20Park/DSC_8849.jpg&#x22; /&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f28/edc3/Central%20Park/DSC_8853.jpg&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;img width=&#x22;400&#x22; src=&#x22;http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f28/edc3/Central%20Park/DSC_8853.jpg&#x22; /&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f28/edc3/Central%20Park/DSC_8854.jpg&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;img width=&#x22;600&#x22; src=&#x22;http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f28/edc3/Central%20Park/DSC_8854.jpg&#x22; /&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;It was beautiful to watch. Congratulating two people I&#x27;d never met before, I felt it, the real progress. For me, it was an &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZaahjLSMrQ&#x22;&#x3E;Angels in America&#x3C;/a&#x3E; thing.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;This disease will be the end of many of us but not nearly all, and the dead will be commemorated, and we&#x27;ll struggle on with the living, and we are not going away. We won&#x27;t die secret deaths anymore. The world only spins forward. We will be citizens. The Time has come. Bye now, you are fabulous, each and every one of you. More life, the great work begins.&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;It took me back to the hate filled era when Tony Kushner put those words to paper. I remembered that political action had already changed acceptance in the time that passed before Stephen Spinella repeated those words on the stage. Great change had already come by the time Justin Kirk said it on our televisions. And yesterday, on a lovely Central Park day of autumn leaves over snow, I thought the the view seemed almost climactic.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;For everyone else, the people enjoying the view at the Bethesda Terrace, walkers throughout the rest of the park, people all across this great city, the state of New York State and this entire nation, that wedding and many others are a symbol of justice and equal rights. But seeing those vows before that Angel, that was inspirational.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Change does happen and yesterday&#x27;s view felt like healing waters washing across America.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Weisenfeld on Palestinians: &#x201C;People who worship death for their children are not human.&#x201D;</title>

&#x3C;p&#x3E;City University of New York trustee, Jeffrey Weisenfeld, expanded today on his decision to refuse to support a CUNY honorary degree for Tony Kushner. &#x26;nbsp; &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/05/05/973313/-CUNY-Strips-Tony-Kushner-of-Honor-Because-of-Views-on-Israel&#x22;&#x3E;David Mizner&#x27;s recommended diary&#x3C;/a&#x3E; of yesterday told this sad tale of CUNY&#x27;s Trustees bowing to Weisenfeld&#x27;s pressure to reject the request for Kushner&#x27;s honor because of Kushner&#x27;s critical views on Israel. &#x26;nbsp;CUNY&#x27;s decision has been met with derision and protest as an attempt to stifle discussion on the Palestine and Israel tragedy. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>CUNY Strips Tony Kushner of Honor Because of Views on Israel</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/5/5/973313/-CUNY-Strips-Tony-Kushner-of-Honor-Because-of-Views-on-Israel</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;CUNY -- which I and other New Yorkers support with our tax dollars -- won&#x27;t give &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/05/nyregion/cuny-blocks-honor-for-tony-kushner.html?_r=1&#x26;amp;ref=nyregion&#x22;&#x3E;Tony Kushner an honorary degree&#x3C;/a&#x3E; because of his unpopular views on Israel. Unpopular, at least, with one trustee, conservative activist Jeffrey S. Wiesenfeld, who spearheaded the reversal.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;In a rare move, the trustees of the City University of New York have voted to shelve an honorary degree that one of its campuses, John Jay College, planned to award to Tony Kushner, the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of &#x201C;Angels in America.&#x201D; The vote on Monday evening came after a CUNY trustee said that Mr. Kushner had disparaged the State of Israel in past comments, a characterization that the writer attacked on Wednesday.&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;

<title>So What? A Cinematic Tour of Philosophy</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/5/25/869769/-So-What-A-Cinematic-Tour-of-Philosophy</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;So many of us want to make things better: the world, our lives, the lives of others.&#x3C;/strong&#x3E; Some are driven by a vision; if not the lion and lamb cuddling up together, at least a greater harmony and wholeness. My generation of thinkers and activists is swathed in that desire. Looking back, I see this scene: I am painting a portrait of myself as earth-mother, with a child-sized globe swaddled in my arms; on the stereo, the Rolling Stones are singing &#x22;Angie,&#x22; and when they get to that line, &#x22;Sometimes I want to wrap my coat around you,&#x22; the painting is done.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;A few days ago, my friend told me that her daughter and her twenty-something activist cohort see life differently from their parents&#x27; generation. They gaze through open eyes at something terrible coming toward us, and are working with great commitment to limit the damage, to live with conviction and enjoyment despite it.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Perhaps we all want Arcadia. Even under the worst conditions, desire is free. But if history is any guide, I&#x27;m beginning to think the path of wisdom steers clear of disappointment when Arcadia doesn&#x27;t arrive.

<title>&#x22;It is about decency.&#x22;</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/6/27/747638/--It-is-about-decency</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;There are few things in the realm of the political world which are so difficult to speak about as the tragedy in Israel and Palestine. &#x26;nbsp;Both Jews and Palestinian Arabs rank among the most brutalized and despised minorities in the world. &#x26;nbsp;Catastrophic losses of life and of dignity among both populations are terribly recent and within living memory. &#x26;nbsp;And their tragedies are not their own, but have in a myriad of ways reached out to touch millions more.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;This burden of blood is difficult for even the best of us to bear. &#x26;nbsp;The stakes are terribly high; the lives of those which may be forsaken in the future from this conflict, our duty to those already dead, and the demand on every person that we satisfy our moral impulses weigh upon us. &#x26;nbsp;It is not surprising that our passions are inflamed and our humility dismissed or even that we often lack a logical consistency. &#x26;nbsp;We are small and the obligations on us loom ever larger. &#x26;nbsp;Not a month goes by where there are not new victims who cry out for justice and crimes which demand to be avenged.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>In His House at R&#x27;lyeh the Ronald Waits Dreaming</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/5/8/332497/-In-His-House-at-R-lyeh-the-Ronald-Waits-Dreaming</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I see via &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2007/5/8/161654/4407&#x22;&#x3E;Hunter&#x27;s frontpage diary&#x3C;/a&#x3E; and other sources that apparently the Republican candidates spent their recent debate going on and on about how great Ronald Reagan was and blah blah &#x22;Morning in America&#x22; blah blah &#x3C;em&#x3E;Ph&#x27;nglui mglw&#x27;nafh Cthulhu R&#x27;lyeh wgah&#x27;nagl fhtagn!&#x3C;/em&#x3E; blah.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Oh, Republican candidates. You silly creatures. You really should know better than that &#x26;#151; because now I&#x27;m going to have to &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.jhtml?xml=/arts/2007/05/02/btangels102.xml&#x26;amp;DCMP=EMC-art_04052007&#x22;&#x3E;open a can of Tony Kushner&#x3C;/a&#x3E; on you:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x22;I had a great degree of loathing for the Reagan administration,&#x22; he explains, &#x22;and I will hate Ronald Reagan&#x27;s guts until the day I die. You had this bizarre ideology predicated upon the idea that selfishness is generosity, that the best way to take care of society is to look after yourself as much as possible.&#x22;

<title>Why Politics and Purity Do Not Mix</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/2/24/305478/-Why-Politics-and-Purity-Do-Not-Mix</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I am going to post some excerpts from an interview with &#x22;playwright and radical gadfly&#x22; Tony Kushner that was published in the Jewish Magazine &#x3C;em&#x3E;Heeb&#x3C;/em&#x3E; and excerpted in the &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.utne.com/cgi-bin/udt/im.display.printable?client.id=utne&#x26;amp;story.id=11272&#x22;&#x3E;Utne Reader in the summer of 2004&#x3C;/a&#x3E;. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;As you may know, Tony Kushner wrote the &#x3C;em&#x3E;Angels in America (Part One: Millennium Approaches and Part Two: Perestroika)&#x3C;/em&#x3E; in 1993 and 1994. &#x26;nbsp;I am sure you have all heard about that Pulitzer Prize-winning play about AIDS and Reaganism that won two Tony awards and was remade into a HBO miniseries in 2003. &#x26;nbsp;Following that success, Tony Kushner became America&#x27;s leading left-wing gay pundit, tapped by &#x3C;em&#x3E;Newsweek&#x3C;/em&#x3E;, &#x3C;em&#x3E;The Nation&#x3C;/em&#x3E;, &#x3C;em&#x3E;The New York Times&#x3C;/em&#x3E;, and &#x3C;em&#x3E;The Advocate&#x3C;/em&#x3E; to speak on issues ranging from homophobia to socialism. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
