<title>Reason #6/100 why we all should vote for HRC</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2016/8/4/1556623/-Reason-6-100-why-we-all-should-vote-for-HRC</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;95 days til the election, reason #6/100 why we all should vote for Hillary:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Her commitment to supporting people with disabilities and their families runs deep, and it&#x27;s not just lip service. Her platform contains &#x22;the most detailed policy document on autism in U.S. presidential election history.&#x22; &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/10/opinions/perry-autism-hillary-clinton-plan/&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;www.cnn.com/...&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#xA0; This is not new for her. As a Senator back in 2006, she sponsored&#xA0;a bill to improve support and services for individuals with autism and their families, the Expanding Opportunities for Individuals with Autism Act.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Washington Post gives Anti-Vaccine Advocate Full Article to Launch World Autism Month</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/4/2/1375181/-Washington-Post-gives-Anti-Vaccine-Advocate-Full-Article-to-Launch-World-Autism-Month</link>

&#x3C;div class=&#x22;dkimg-c&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;span class=&#x22;image_container&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;img src=&#x22;http://images.dailykos.com/images/136801/large/Autism_Awareness.gif?1428003328&#x22; alt=&#x22;&#x22; width=&#x22;545&#x22; height=&#x22;275&#x22; /&#x3E;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
Kim Rossi Stagliano, an autism advocate and mother of three autistic children has written a few fairly controversial books on the subject. &#x26;nbsp;She also takes care of a blog called &#x22;Age of Autism&#x22;; her blog - &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.ageofautism.com/&#x22;&#x3E;available here&#x3C;/a&#x3E;, is filled with the typical autism oriented conspiracy theories, linking Autism to Mercury in vaccines, a &#x22;vaccine epidemic&#x22; as well as continued celebration of now debunked scientist Andrew Wakefield.
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Kim&#x27;s article, published in the Washington Post today is simple: &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2015/04/02/my-three-daughters-are-autistic-i-despise-autism-awareness-month/?tid=sm_fb&#x22;&#x3E;My three daughters are autistic. I despise Autism Awareness Month.&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Arguing that Autism Awareness simplifies a tragic epidemic, Stagliano makes her point about her own experiences.&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;The feel-good frippery of Light It Up Blue cloaks an often debilitating disorder in an air of festivity, with balloons, sparkling lights and pep rallies. The campaign implies autism is a party, rather than a crisis. For families living with autism, reality is far more sober, and their needs extend far beyond &#x201C;awareness.&#x201D;&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
While I never deny any person their own experience with those who are autistic, I think it is equally important we do not brandish all of those with autism by the same brush, as debilitating poxes on families.
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Stagliano&#x27;s April 1 post on her own website marked her feelings on this issue:&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;I am against the outright celebratory tone of April. &#x3C;strong&#x3E;I always consider this a month of solemn commemoration.&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
While Stagliano is of course free to mourn through April (and probably beyond), her base argument seems to be denying the broad spread diversity that make up the autism spectrum.

<title>Doug Sanders, please talk to my daughter Kyla</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/11/17/1256201/-Doug-Sanders-please-talk-to-my-daughter-Kyla</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Autism Speaks cofounder Suzanne Wright&#x27;s recent blog post dehumanizes autistic children and labels their parents as victims. &#x26;nbsp;Autism Speaks raises nearly $60 million a year in the name of autism but only 4% goes toward direct services. &#x26;nbsp;They are widely disliked by autistic adults and many family members for their complete failure to include autistics in their organization. &#x26;nbsp;They use horrific negative stereotypes of autistic children to market their charity. &#x26;nbsp; I am an autistic adult and my daughter and my brother are autistic too. &#x26;nbsp;I&#x27;d like for my daughter to have the opportunity to talk with a major supporter of Autism Speaks, Doug Sanders, President of Sprout Markets, who has a grocery store here in my neighborhood. &#x26;nbsp; My daughter is a talented artist, passionate, and she&#x27;s better at public speaking than I am. &#x26;nbsp;If he got to know an autistic young adult, I thnk he&#x27;d be pretty impressed, and he just might rethink his views.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Have you ever wanted to scream so loud, the whole world can hear you?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;I have, and it&#x27;s a pretty long story, so get ya a cuppa joe and sit down.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;If it&#x27;s after 12:00 noon where you live, I won&#x27;t tell anybody if you grab a beer...&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;BUT, be ready to be deeply, deeply offended if you look to psychiatry to &#x22;save&#x22; your children. &#x26;nbsp;If you do, remember...it ain&#x27;t about you. Allow me to re-iterate...IT AIN&#x27;T ABOUT YOU...don&#x27;t make me have to slap some sense into you. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;By God, I will....&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;I&#x27;m NOT cynical...I&#x27;m angry! Mostly at myself. &#x26;nbsp;Learn from my mistakes, and save yourself the heartache&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;

<title>Autism Speaks Hits A New Low</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/9/23/785559/-Autism-Speaks-Hits-A-New-Low</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;(cross-posted, with slight modifications, from &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://aut.zone38.net/2009/09/23/autism-speaks-hits-a-new-low/&#x22;&#x3E;my personal blog&#x3C;/a&#x3E;)&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;If you&#x27;ve been reading my blog or my diaries here, you probably know my stance toward the organization Autism Speaks by now. It&#x27;s an organization I&#x27;ve always had my share of issues with; see &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://aut.zone38.net/category/controversies/autism-speaks/&#x22;&#x3E;my past posts on the subject&#x3C;/a&#x3E; for some idea of why.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;But this time, they&#x27;ve really outdone themselves.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;But before I explain what they&#x27;ve done to make me say that, I have to provide a bit of background information...&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>An autistic says &#x27;mea culpa&#x27;</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/6/27/543198/-An-autistic-says-mea-culpa</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;As it turns out, those skeptical of the latest Autism Speaks controversy may have actually been right.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;First, some background: &#x26;nbsp;Recently a blogger designed a shirt with the slogan &#x22;Autism Speaks can go away&#x22;, referring to the autism charity which is not held in high esteem amongst the autistic community, and posted it to the online T-shirt store Zazzle. &#x26;nbsp;The shirt was pulled from the catalog not long after, due to an alleged intellectual property complaint. I covered this all in &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/6/22/16952/4019/740/540306&#x22;&#x3E;my previous diary&#x3C;/a&#x3E; here on DKos.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;But as it turns out, Autism Speaks did not specifically target that shirt with its trademark complaint; that was a mistake on Zazzle&#x27;s part.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Autism Speaks Against Autistic Free Speech and Fair-Use Parody</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/6/22/540306/-Autism-Speaks-Against-Autistic-Free-Speech-and-Fair-Use-Parody</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;NOTE: See correction under the fold; turns out Autism Speaks was &#x3C;em&#x3E;not&#x3C;/em&#x3E; responsible for the most recent takedown.&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;You might recall that a while back, I posted &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://codeman38.dailykos.com/story/2007/5/19/223159/715/116/336513&#x22;&#x3E;a diary criticizing some of the tactics of the autism charity Autism Speaks&#x3C;/a&#x3E;.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Well, let&#x27;s all be thankful that they haven&#x27;t (yet) forced DKos to take that post down&#x26;mdash; or, worse yet, sent a cease-and-desist notice to the hosting provider for my personal blog, &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://aut.zone38.net/2007/06/03/an-autistic-speaks-about-autism-speaks/&#x22;&#x3E;at which I also posted it&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x26;mdash; because of alleged intellectual property infringement. As utterly absurd as that may sound, it is precisely what they&#x27;ve done to &#x3C;del&#x3E;not one but &#x3C;em&#x3E;two&#x3C;/em&#x3E; autistic bloggers&#x3C;/del&#x3E; &#x3C;strong&#x3E;an autistic parodist&#x3C;/strong&#x3E; who &#x3C;del&#x3E;have&#x3C;/del&#x3E; &#x3C;strong&#x3E;has&#x3C;/strong&#x3E; dared to criticize that organization.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
