<title>The Pennsylvania Report about Child Sexual Abuse by Catholic Priests</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2018/8/17/1789098/-The-Pennsylvania-Report-about-Child-Sexual-Abuse-by-Catholic-Priests</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I&#x2019;m almost 64 and a life-long Roman Catholic.&#xA0; I still regularly attend Mass on Sundays.&#xA0; I&#x2019;ve never known anybody who said he or she was sexually abused by a priest, and I certainly was not myself.&#xA0; For many years on this forum, when people have painted in broad brushes about how the entire Catholic Church is a den of pedophiles, I&#x2019;ve fought back and said I think the great majority of priests are completely honorable and holy.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The recent report from a Grand Jury in Pennsylvania about 70 years of sexual abuse by Catholic priests in the state has totally knocked me to the ground.&#xA0; The numbers are staggering!&#xA0; If it was 300 priests they could identify over 70 years in one state, then if you extrapolate it to all states, and to all countries, and back for centuries, you&#x2019;re talking about millions of victims!&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I can&#x2019;t believe I&#x2019;m saying this, but I&#x2019;m considering leaving the church.&#xA0; This will consume me with lots of prayer and worry.&#xA0; To me, leaving the church of my earliest childhood would feel almost like ripping my heart out.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Obviously, this should be the inflection point where the church abandons the rule of celibacy for priests.&#xA0; Incidentally, Jesus never preached that, and it&#x2019;s nowhere in the Bible.&#xA0; It was introduced as a church rule in the 1100s.&#xA0; It could be changed by a short order from Pope Francis.&#xA0; I&#x2019;m VERY disappointed that he hasn&#x2019;t spoken out clearly about this!&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I recommend this ferocious op-ed by James Martin, S.J., the editor of the prestigious Jesuit publication America:&#xA0; &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/15/opinion/the-virtues-of-catholic-anger.html&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;www.nytimes.com/&#x2026;.&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Retired Catholic Priests say ENOUGH! End Vatican Ordered &#x22;Celibacy&#x22;</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/5/12/1208637/-Retired-Catholic-Priests-say-ENOUGH-End-Vatican-Celibacy</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Yesterday in the wee morning hours, I watched a replay on CSPAN of 1 1/2 hours of commentary by refugees from the Roman Catholic Church. These whistleblowers are beseeching Pope Francis to end celibacy. Why? Because there is a &#x22;cloud&#x22; behind which 50% or more of Roman Catholic priests, with the full knowledge of the Vatican and most everyone in the church across the U.S and all over the world, live a lie of celibacy.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;When the sexual urges arise, it is common knowledge within the church that priests look for sexual release primarily with children and co-workers in the church. They prey on the vulnerable whose lives are filled with torment unless they turn to suicide and they do.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>The War on Women: US Catholic Bishops Investigating Girl Scouts</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/5/11/1090785/-The-War-on-Women-US-Catholic-Bishops-Investigating-Girl-Scouts</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;This is ridiculous, but it&#x27;s real and could end up harming many girls and women. &#x26;nbsp; &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;Long a lightning rod for conservative criticism, the Girl Scouts of the USA are now facing their highest-level challenge yet: An official inquiry by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
&#x3C;p&#x3E;At issue are concerns about program materials that some Catholics find offensive, as well as assertions that the &#x3C;strong&#x3E;Scouts associate with other groups espousing stances that conflict with church teaching&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;. The Scouts, who have numerous parish-sponsored troops, deny many of the claims and defend their alliances.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;snip&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;The new inquiry will be conducted by the bishops&#x27; Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth. It will look into the Scouts&#x27; &#x22;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;possible problematic relationships with other organizations&#x22; and various &#x22;problematic&#x22; program materials&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;, according to a letter sent by the committee chairman, Bishop Kevin Rhoades of Fort Wayne, Ind., to his fellow bishops.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;snip&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Girl Scout leaders hope the bishops&#x27; apprehensions will be eased once they gather information. But there&#x27;s frustration within the iconic youth organization - known for its inclusiveness and cookie sales - that it has become such an ideological target, with the girls sometimes caught in the political crossfire.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x22;I know we&#x27;re a big part of the culture wars,&#x22; said the Girl Scouts&#x27; spokeswoman, Michelle Tompkins. &#x22;People use our good name to advance their own agenda.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x22;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;For us, there&#x27;s an overarching sadness to it,&#x22; Tompkins added. &#x22;We&#x27;re just trying to further girls&#x27; leadership.&#x22;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/47376416&#x22;&#x3E;Girl Scouts under scrutiny from Catholic bishops&#x3C;/a&#x3E;

<title>Dear TN Lege: MORE Gateway Sexual Activities Revealed!</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/4/16/1083588/-Dear-TN-Lege-MORE-Gateway-Sexual-Activities-Revealed</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Bravo to you, TN Legislators, for taking a firm (though somewhat belated) stand against the holding of hands. &#x26;nbsp;I remember vividly my first experience with handholding as a gateway sexual activity. &#x26;nbsp;Well, I don&#x27;t really, but I do remember being with this studly guy I was already having sex with, sitting in a movie touching hands and getting hotter than an insider-trading stock tip. &#x26;nbsp;So, you&#x27;re right, all that touching definitely leads to sex, if you&#x27;re doing it right.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;During the past week I&#x27;ve thought quite a lot about this sexual gateway stuff. &#x26;nbsp;Your bill was eye-opening for me - I&#x27;d heard of gateway drugs, like marijuana and daddy&#x27;s beer stash, but never of gateway sex. &#x26;nbsp;After much deep rumination I&#x27;ve come to some startling conclusions, Number One being that human beings are &#x3C;strong&#x3E;born&#x3C;/strong&#x3E; to have sex! &#x26;nbsp;Think about it - we come into the world with gender specific genitalia (mostly), the hormone floods start in utero and continue throughout our lifetimes, despite the rumors that sex is NOT for old people. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;There doesn&#x27;t seem to be a topic that&#x27;s as hot (heh) as sex and sexuality, at least not in this country, and over the centuries we seem to have found more and more ways to make rules in an effort to control sexual behavior, without ever succeeding. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;This is a lost cause. &#x26;nbsp;Humans are hopelessly sexual, they strenuously resist all efforts to deny sexuality, and some of them appear to think about sex roughly every 5 minutes throughout their lifetimes. &#x26;nbsp;It&#x27;s an incredible waste of productive energy.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Just when you think the Catholic Church couldn&#x27;t be any more shameless...</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/3/21/1076573/-Just-when-you-think-the-Catholic-Church-couldn-t-be-any-more-shameless</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp; &#x26;nbsp; &#x26;nbsp; &#x26;nbsp;We&#x27;ve all been hearing ad nauseum about &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://content.usatoday.com/communities/Religion/post/2012/02/obama-catholic-bishops-contaception-abortion/1#.T2piRHjFUy4&#x22;&#x3E;the need of the Roman Catholic Church to deny women contraception&#x3C;/a&#x3E; to defend its deeply held principles, right? There&#x27;s been a huge kerfuffle from the right wing about the President&#x27;s war on religion. There&#x27;s fear being ginned up about an all powerful government dictating the most personal aspects of peoples lives. There&#x27;s charges about faceless bureaucrats wielding the power of life and death, people who answer to no one.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp; &#x26;nbsp; &#x26;nbsp; &#x26;nbsp; &#x26;nbsp;Funny that. If there&#x27;s anyone who knows the danger of letting faceless authoritarians free reign over the lives of others, it&#x27;s the Roman Catholic Church. &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-17453849&#x22;&#x3E;A story breaking in the Netherlands of child abuse covered up by the Church has taken matters to a new level&#x3C;/a&#x3E;.&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;Up to 11 boys were castrated while in the care of the Dutch Roman Catholic church in the 1950s to rid them of homosexuality, a newspaper investigation has said.
&#x3C;p&#x3E;A young man was castrated in 1956 after telling police he was being abused by priests, the newspaper reported.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x26;nbsp; &#x26;nbsp; &#x26;nbsp; &#x26;nbsp;This follows &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/dec/16/children-dutch-catholic-institutions-abused&#x22;&#x3E;revelations last year&#x3C;/a&#x3E; that tens of thousands of children were abused while in the care of Dutch Catholic institutions - and that the Church looked the other way while sweeping it under the rug.&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;An 1,100-page report from a commission led by a former education minister and Christian Democrat leader said it could identify 800 Catholic clergy and other church employees guilty of sexually abusing children in the 40 years from 1945 and that more than 100 perpetrators were still alive.
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Children in institutional care, regardless of religious affiliation, in the Netherlands were at substantial risk of being abused during the period, the molestation rate &#x2013; 20% &#x2013; being twice that of elsewhere. The investigation led by Wim Deetman concluded that several tens of thousands of children had suffered sexual molestation.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;With the Catholic church embroiled in child abuse scandals from Ireland to Austria and lay Catholics mobilising against the Vatican for root-and-branch reform of canon law to end celibacy in the priesthood and facilitate female ordination, the Dutch report was the latest damning verdict of serial abuse accompanied by persistent cover-ups.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x26;nbsp; &#x26;nbsp; &#x26;nbsp; &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.rnw.nl/english/dossier/Church-child-sex-abuse&#x22;&#x3E;Too much more here&#x3C;/a&#x3E;.

<title>Book Review: The Predictioneer&#x27;s Game by Bruce Bueno de Mesquita</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/4/12/856407/-Book-Review-The-Predictioneer-s-Game-by-Bruce-Bueno-de-Mesquita</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;My younger brother bought me this book for Christmas and I thought it was well done. Bueno de Mesquita is &#x22;a master of game theory&#x22; and professor of politics at NYU and a senior fellow at the Hoover Institute. According to the book flap one of his recent books was co-authored by Condoleezza Rice. His conservative leanings pop up once or twice in the book but it&#x27;s mostly a non factor.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I&#x27;m not quite sure how to write this review. Should I preview the book and let you read it for yourself or give you my full breakdown? I&#x27;ll do both and hope for comments to let me know which is preferred going forward.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Deliver Us From Evil</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/10/15/398403/-Deliver-Us-From-Evil</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;This &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.guardian.co.uk/italy/story/0,,2191311,00.html&#x22;&#x3E;sex scandal inside the Vatican&#x3C;/a&#x3E; that every chat show is yammering about (that&#x27;s what the news has become, a series of chat shows) is nothing so much as redundant. &#x26;nbsp;This one is sensational, as there&#x27;s actual videotape of the senior official propositioning the young man right inside his Vatican office, but it&#x27;s no different than the spate of cases that has sadly turned the profession of pious priest into a punch line.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Television viewers saw the Vatican official sit alongside his guest and say: &#x22;You&#x27;re very good-looking.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x22;Thank you,&#x22; replied the younger man, before putting it to his host that he was about to commit a sin.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x22;I don&#x27;t feel it is a sin,&#x22; said the official. When the other man insisted that it was at odds with the teaching of the church, the Vatican official brought the conversation to an abrupt end.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;When his guest bade farewell, saying &#x22;It&#x27;s been a pleasure,&#x22; the Vatican official replied: &#x22;Not for me, because you don&#x27;t fancy me.&#x22;

<title>Rome, married priest and homosexuals - Updated with links</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/11/14/271347/-Rome-married-priest-and-homosexuals-Updated-with-links</link>
<description>There were two interesting announcements today from the Roman Catholic Church. The first was the announcement that Pope Benedict XVI was calling together the power base in Rome to discuss the issue of clerical celibacy. The second was the declaration from the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops in which they declare that homosexuals are sinful people if they live a life of love with a committed partner, announce in any way their sexuality or basically take another breath. &#x3C;/p&#x3E;&#x3C;p&#x3E;
While the two announcements seem to have very little in common, I believe they are linked. They are linked through one common thread. The church has always taught this and thus it cannot be changed. &#x3C;br /&#x3E;

<title>An argument for alternatives to heterosexuality (w/poll)</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/2/5/184790/-An-argument-for-alternatives-to-heterosexuality-w-poll</link>
<description>There are, of course, many alternatives to heterosexuality. &#x26;nbsp;The ones that most people think of are homosexuality or bisexuality. &#x26;nbsp;And then there are other forms of sexuality that most people would regard as perversions, such as necrophilia or frotteurism. &#x26;nbsp;But what a lot of people don&#x27;t think about is asexuality or celibacy, which is practiced by a surprisingly large number of people for a remarkably wide variety of reasons, many of which are not religious. &#x26;nbsp;There are even some people who experience atrophy of the sexual organs because they don&#x27;t use them at all, and there is actually some truth to the adage &#x22;use it or lose it.&#x22;</description>
