&#x3C;b&#x3E;Leading Off&#x3C;/b&#x3E;:
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x2022; &#x3C;b&#x3E;SC-Sen-B&#x3C;/b&#x3E;: In a major shocker, the &#x3C;i&#x3E;Wall Street Journal&#x3C;/i&#x3E; broke the news on Thursday morning that South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323501404578161613763222762.html&#x22;&#x3E;will resign in January&#x3C;/a&#x3E; to become head of the Heritage Foundation, a conservative DC think-tank. While DeMint had previously said &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://thehill.com/homenews/senate/119115-sen-demint-relishes-role-as-kingmaker&#x22;&#x3E;he had no plans&#x3C;/a&#x3E; to seek a third term in 2016, he was only re-elected two years ago, so this news comes as a serious surprise, particularly since there had been no prior hints that he might bail.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;DeMint had long fancied himself a conservative kingmaker, meddling in many Republican primaries by means of his outside activist organization, the Senate Conservatives Fund. That had often set him at odds with GOP leadership, who viewed the SCF in the same way they might view the Club for Growth: a group devoted to making it harder for more electable Republicans to win their party&#x27;s nomination.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;But the fact that DeMint was himself Senator rankled his fellow members of Congress even more, to the point that he had to promise he would stop trying to unseat incumbents&#x2014;a promise &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0312/74264.html&#x22;&#x3E;he apparently broke&#x3C;/a&#x3E; earlier this year when SCF transferred $500,000 to the Club at the precise moment they were (successfully) trying to nuke Dick Lugar in Indiana.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Now DeMint will have a much freer hand to interfere in GOP internal politics as it suits him, though Heritage is surely not immune to political pressure either. Still, it&#x27;s easy to imagine how this kind of free agency would appeal to DeMint. And the job may appeal to his pocketbook as well: The outgoing chief of the Heritage Foundation earns a cool &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2012/12/06/jim-demint-gets-his-reward.html&#x22;&#x3E;$1 million a year&#x3C;/a&#x3E;. That&#x27;s quite the upgrade for DeMint, whose &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://apps.washingtonpost.com/politics/capitol-assets/member/jim-demint/&#x22;&#x3E;$40,000 net worth&#x3C;/a&#x3E; made him one of the least-wealthy members of Congress.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;So what happens next? Continue reading below the fold.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>SC-Gov: A Christian family man who won&#x27;t embarrass us</title>

<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Gresham Barrett is a &#x22;Christian family man who won&#x27;t embarrass us.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;object width=&#x22;450&#x22; height=&#x22;385&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;param value=&#x22;http://www.youtube.com/v/aCV6kH6voK4&#x26;amp;hl=en_US&#x26;amp;fs=1&#x26;amp;&#x22; name=&#x22;movie&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/param&#x3E;&#x3C;param value=&#x22;true&#x22; name=&#x22;allowFullScreen&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/param&#x3E;&#x3C;param value=&#x22;always&#x22; name=&#x22;allowscriptaccess&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/param&#x3E;&#x3C;embed width=&#x22;450&#x22; allowfullscreen=&#x22;true&#x22; allowscriptaccess=&#x22;always&#x22; src=&#x22;http://www.youtube.com/v/aCV6kH6voK4&#x26;amp;hl=en_US&#x26;amp;fs=1&#x26;amp;&#x22; type=&#x22;application/x-shockwave-flash&#x22; height=&#x22;385&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/embed&#x3E;&#x3C;/object&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Well, sure. Because everyone knows that electing a Christian family man as governor of South Carolina is a surefire way to avoid embarrassment.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>SC-Gov: The Haley Saga Not Over Yet</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/6/8/874206/-SC-Gov-The-Haley-Saga-Not-Over-Yet</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;For those who can&#x27;t get enough of the South Carolina GOP gubernatorial soap opera, &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/files/elections/2010/by_county/SC_US_Senate_0608.html?SITE=AP&#x26;amp;SECTION=POLITICS&#x22;&#x3E;you are in luck&#x3C;/a&#x3E;!&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The AP is reporting that tonight&#x27;s primary will result in a runoff between Nikki Haley and Congressman Gresham Barrett. Haley came tantalizingly close to avoiding the runoff (currently sitting at 49% of the vote), but the AP projects she will just miss clinching the race.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Needless to say, however, that since she needs only a fraction of a fraction of the votes of the vanquished, she is the overwhelming favorite for the runoff in a couple of weeks. The winner will face Democratic state senator Vincent Sheheen, who won by a surprisingly wide margin this evening.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>SC republican applauds HCR bill in writing to constitutent </title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/4/8/854602/-SC-republican-applauds-HCR-bill-in-writing-to-constitutent</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I can&#x27;t believe South Carolina&#x27;s U.S. House of Representative Gresham Barrett sent a letter to a local constituent, writing of the positive aspects of H.R. 3590, Patient Protection &#x26;amp; Affordable Care Act. &#x26;nbsp;I&#x27;ve seen it with my own eyes! After his introductory remark of &#x22;thank you for contacting me&#x22;, the letter continues with -
&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;As you know, one of the most pressing problems in health care is the large number of uninsured and underinsured Americans, 700,000 of which are located in South Carolina. I understand that you support health care reform legislation that will provide insurance coverage to all Americans.
&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E; I should note that Gresham Barrett is currently running for South Carolina Governor. &#x26;nbsp;His House seat is open, with republican and Democratic primaries in June. &#x26;nbsp;The letter follows with a long paragraph giving factual information about the health care reform bill. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>SC Democratic Gov Candidate Mullins McLeod&#x27;s email response to GOP Rep Gresham Barrett</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/11/4/800502/-SC-Democratic-Gov-Candidate-Mullins-McLeod-s-email-response-to-GOP-Rep-Gresham-Barrett</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Yesterday, Congressman Gresham Barrett sent Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Mullins McLeod an email asking him to sign a letter to President Obama demanding that he not move suspected terrorists to South Carolina or American soil as they await military trial. Barrett is a Republican candidate for Governor.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Below is McLeod&#x27;s response email to Congressman Barrett sent this morning. &#x26;nbsp;As the email clearly states, McLeod has chosen to decline Barrett&#x27;s request.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>How Do You Turn a Red State Blue?</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/10/4/789624/-How-Do-You-Turn-a-Red-State-Blue</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I live in South Carolina, and I don&#x26;#8217;t know the answer. Yes, I&#x26;#8217;m from the land of Jim DeMint, Joe Wilson, and Mark Sanford. Yes, I&#x26;#8217;m from the state that other Kos commenters constantly ask, &#x26;#8220;What&#x26;#8217;s wrong with them?&#x26;#8221; (oh, and I can tell you, asking that question doesn&#x26;#8217;t actually help). And yes, I&#x26;#8217;m from the land where it can feel awfully lonely being a liberal; where people walk over to the Democratic Party booth at town festivals just to make trouble; where running as a Democrat in some parts of the state is the mission of a martyr; where so few Democrats run that our primaries can be commandeered by libertarians (I&#x26;#8217;m looking at you former senate candidate Bob Conley).&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Schadenfreude Alert: Video of Carolina Wingnuts vs. the GOP</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/4/20/722177/-Schadenfreude-Alert-Video-of-Carolina-Wingnuts-vs-the-GOP</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;In what might be the funniest piece of Southern based comedy since the golden age of 1960s redneck comedies (Hee Haw, Green Acres, Beverly Hillbillies, etc.), watch as a group of South Carolina teabaggers go apeshit and let the hootin&#x27; and hollerin&#x27; fly as their congressman, Rep. Gresham Barrett, tries to appease the unruly horde at a local teabag rally.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The crowd is seen here reacting to the fact that Barrett had voted in favor of the $700 billion bailout. This, of course, raises the question as to why this two faced rep would appear at a teabag rally if he had voted for a stimulus bill. Opportunistic politics, anyone? Unfortunatly for Barrett, sometimes politics as usual blows up in one&#x27;s face.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
