<title>Wisconsin Rep. pledges &#x22;not to collect one cent of per diem money ever&#x22;; Collects $10,560</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/3/3/1281742/-Wisconsin-Rep-pledges-not-to-collect-one-cent-of-per-diem-money-ever-Collects-10-560</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;When Republican representative Scott Krug was running for a seat in the Wisconsin Assembly in 2010, he was interviewed by the Wisconsin State Journal. Positioning himself as a fiscal conservative, he told the interviewer that he would forego all &#x22;per diem&#x22; payments available to legislators as reimbursement for travel, lodging, and other expenses when working in Madison, the state&#x27;s capital.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;In fact, &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://host.madison.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/elections/candidate-profiles-republican-primary-for-nd-assembly-district/article_4672b348-bda7-11df-bfc1-001cc4c002e0.html#ixzz2uuOrAC00&#x22;&#x3E;he pledged NEVER to take any reimbursement money&#x3C;/a&#x3E;:&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;Q: All three candidates have talked about cutting spending. Can you make specific suggestions for what you would cut out of the budget?
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Krug: The biggest area of spending cuts has to come from public and government services where private services can be used just as well for less cost, like Wisconsin Public Television and Radio ... Artificially-set prevailing wages and project labor agreements cut deep into taxpayer money as well. ... My first spending cut is promising not to collect one cent of (legislative) per diem money &#x3C;strong&#x3E;ever&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
You know where this is going, right?

<title>Palin faces more ethics charges related to per diems</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/7/10/751972/-Palin-faces-more-ethics-charges-related-to-per-diems</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Remember how Sarah Palin claims she was driven out of office by the costs of responding to ethics complaints? &#x26;nbsp;Well, Sarah better pull out the checkbook--&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/07/09/palin.ethics/index.html&#x22;&#x3E;she&#x27;s got another one&#x3C;/a&#x3E;.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;If Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin thought her decision to step down might end ethics accusations against her, she quickly found out she was wrong.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Just days after her bombshell resignation announcement, a new ethics complaint was filed with state authorities arguing that she should not be able to claim per diem funds when she stays at her Wasilla, Alaska, home instead of Anchorage or Juneau, where she has offices. The complaint says she was charging the state when she stayed in Wasilla and commuted to her offices.
&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Palin&#x27;s per diems aren&#x27;t a new issue for us. &#x26;nbsp;Last year, it emerged that Palin &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/9/20/10542/7899&#x22;&#x3E;might not have reported her per diems as income&#x3C;/a&#x3E;, as required (h/t to clammyc). &#x26;nbsp;Indeed, earlier this year, Alaska officials ruled Palin &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://voices.washingtonpost.com/44/2009/02/18/alaska_says_palin_owes_tax_on.html&#x22;&#x3E;owed $19,500 in taxes&#x3C;/a&#x3E; on those per diems.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Sarah Palin: &#x26;#160;Tax Cheat</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/2/18/698825/-Sarah-Palin-160-Tax-Cheat</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;You betcha! &#x26;nbsp;I said thanks but no thanks to those pesky per diem payments!&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.mcclatchydc.com/homepage/story/62380.html&#x22;&#x3E;Alaskan state officials have determined&#x3C;/a&#x3E; that Governor Sarah Palin does in fact own an undetermined amount of back taxes.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Gov. Sarah Palin must pay income taxes on thousands of dollars in expense money she received while living at her Wasilla home, under a new determination by state officials.

<title>Sarah Palin&#x27;s Tax Returns</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/10/4/620125/-Sarah-Palin-s-Tax-Returns</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I practiced before the U.S. Tax Court for 15 years, and have at least a modest understanding of current tax laws. &#x26;nbsp;Sarah Palin&#x27;s recently released tax returns understate her gross income by $17,000.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Palin Tax Return Problems?</title>

<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Shorter taxprof blog&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Per diems appear not to be included in income?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Family travel reimbursement issues?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Both conclusions seem problematic.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Not much in the mood for typing tonight, but did the best I could with the info below... Enjoy!&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Wow! The woman who calls herself &#x22;an everyday, working-class American&#x22; just got ratted out. This should prove to be interesting.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Add up the couple&#x27;s 2007 income and the estimated value of their property and investments and they appear to be worth at least $1.2 million.
&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;This all from a recent &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.adn.com/palin/story/543094.html&#x22;&#x3E;ADN&#x3C;/a&#x3E; article.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>AP: &#x26;#160;Palin&#x27;s travel reimbursements could be taxable (updated with Digg link)</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/9/12/595949/-AP-160-Palin-s-travel-reimbursements-could-be-taxable-updated-with-Digg-link</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Here&#x27;s another story you can file in the &#x22;Did McCain &#x3C;strong&#x3E;really&#x3C;/strong&#x3E; vet Palin?&#x22; department. &#x26;nbsp;The AP did a story on the furor over the travel habits of both Palin and Illinois&#x27; Rod Blagojevich. &#x26;nbsp;And today, it&#x27;s greeting Palin in her hometown paper, &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.adn.com/news/alaska/ap_alaska/story/523249.html&#x22;&#x3E;the Anchorage Daily News&#x3C;/a&#x3E;.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Here&#x27;s the money snippet:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Both the Republican candidate for vice president and Blagojevich, a Democrat, continued living in their homes outside the capital city after being elected to lead their states. And with reports that Palin took expense reimbursements while living at home and flies family members at state expense to events, both have been questioned about how and where they work.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;As with Blagojevich, at least one tax expert says Palin&#x27;s travel reimbursements raise questions about whether the Internal Revenue Service would consider some of them taxable fringe benefits.
&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;I figured the MSM would eventually jump on the possibility of IRS problems. &#x26;nbsp;But whodathunk the AP would be first?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Did Sarah Palin Falsify Expense Reports or Break the Law? </title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/9/12/595847/-Did-Sarah-Palin-Falsify-Expense-Reports-or-Break-the-Law</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I&#x27;ve seen a couple of posts on the emerging scandal of Sarah Palin&#x27;s per diem reimbursements for travel. After a bit of reasearch into the Sarah Palin&#x27;s own Division of Finance regulations on travel I can reach one inescapable conclusion: Sarah Palin falsified her travel reimbursement reports and broke the law of her own adminstative agency charged with oversight of the state&#x27;s Travel Office. That&#x27;s only half of the equation.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The second half asks the question: Did Sarah Palin report her travel expenses properly to the IRS and the Alaska Department of Revenue? If she didn&#x27;t, then she may have committed tax fraud which means she&#x27;s on the fast track to being booted from the Republican ticket. It&#x27;s a big deal when a candidate for any public office cheats on their taxes and I can&#x27;t imagine McCain retaining Sarah Palin if her tax returns don&#x27;t add up.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Sarah Palin Must Release Her Tax Returns Now - Obama gets it!</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/9/11/595296/-Sarah-Palin-Must-Release-Her-Tax-Returns-Now-Obama-gets-it</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;Sarah Palin turned over more than 7 years worth of tax returns to the McCain camp during the vetting process. &#x26;nbsp;Why haven&#x27;t those tax returns been released to the public?&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;Correction to prior Update: According to Politico, Biden is putting out 10 years of tax returns Fri morning. &#x26;nbsp;The Obama campaign are going after McCain and Palin on the transparency issue big time!&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0908/13397.html&#x22;&#x3E;Obama to Pressure McCain on Openness&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Update #2: Some question the importance of a potential VP&#x27;s tax returns. &#x26;nbsp;Selecting Sarah Palin was John McCain&#x27;s first presidential-level decision. &#x26;nbsp;The VP has little to do officially but be a president-in-waiting. &#x26;nbsp;Palin was a total unknown two weeks ago. Knowing Palin&#x27;s finances are above board is critical to knowing if she is an honest person who can be trusted with high office. &#x26;nbsp;We know how corrupt the polticial culture of her state is. &#x26;nbsp;We know about a very specific instance where she may have violated the law. &#x26;nbsp;From a strictly partisan standpoint, why would you &#x3C;em&#x3E;not&#x3C;/em&#x3E; demand to see the returns that every other candidate has dutifully supplied?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Palin&#x27;s &#x22;Sex on the City&#x22;?</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/9/10/593290/-Palin-s-Sex-on-the-City</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;(This started as a comment to an open thread but I figured it might deserve bigger play.)&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Remember &#x22;Sex on the City&#x22;? It was the brilliantly catchy name given to Rudy Giuliani&#x27;s practice of billing NYC taxpayers for his romantic trysts. I think it was this scandal more than anything else that sank his Presidential bid. And the catchy name no doubt helped give the story legs.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;How about a similar handle for Sarah Palin&#x27;s trick of collecting travel allowances for nights she spent at her own home? Ideas?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Mine: she stayed at the &#x22;Wasilla Waldorf&#x22;.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>This is what could bring her down</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/9/9/593029/-This-is-what-could-bring-her-down</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;The issue that will significantly damage Sarah Palin&#x27;s reputation, and by extension John McCain&#x27;s, has nothing to do with her rather extreme religious beliefs, her disregard for Polar Bears, Troopergate or most of the other things that bug us progressives. &#x26;nbsp;To undercut the mythology they have created for Palin, the attack must go directly at the image they have constructed-- the reformer who brings change by taking on the status quo, including her party. &#x26;nbsp;And the way to do that with a low-information electorate, as always, is to keep it simple, stupid.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
