<title>The Republican Leadership&#x26;#8211;They Just Don&#x27;t Get it</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/2/19/699262/-The-Republican-Leadership-8211-They-Just-Don-t-Get-it</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;BENEATH THE SPIN &#x26;#8226; ERIC L. WATTREE&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The Republican Leadership&#x26;#8211;They Just Don&#x27;t Get it&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;It is completely unconscionable how far the Republican leadership has strayed from anything resembling responsible governance. While they thrive on their claim of patriotism, their petulant obstructionism during one of the most serious financial crises in American history betrays a total disregard for this nation, and an absolute disdain for the American people. Their childish behavior is nothing short of political malfeasance.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;But true to form, they claim that their attempt to sabotage President Obama&#x27;s rescue program is for America&#x27;s own good. They claim that they&#x27;re concerned about reckless spending, and the huge debt that the president&#x27;s initiative is going to leave our children. But that claim is disingenuous on it&#x27;s face. Where was that concern when they literally threw away a trillion dollars, off budget, in Iraq&#x26;#8211;a meaningless war that only served to enrich Republican cronies, and has caused so much wear and tear on the U.S. Military, that it&#x27;s going to cost us an additional trillion in order for the nation to recover.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>The Republican Party&#x26;#8211;a Threat to America</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/2/12/696544/-The-Republican-Party-8211-a-Threat-to-America</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;BENEATH THE SPIN &#x26;#8226; ERIC L. WATTREE&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The Republican Party&#x26;#8211;a Threat to America&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;One of the Republican Party&#x27;s most enduring talking points is that the Bush administration has kept America safe since 9-11, but what evidence do we have of that? Even as the Bush administration bragged about their security efforts, they left both our front and back doors wide open. The two primary entry points into the United States are all but short of a welcome sign.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;In testimony before the Senate Finance Committee on September 27, 2007, Greg Kutz of the Government Accountability Office testified that GAO investigators were able to cross into the United States from Canada with a duffle bag filled with contents resembling radioactive material on three different occasions during the fall of 2006. He went on to testify that they did so without encountering even one law enforcement official. And as everyone knows, our Southern border is an absolute sieve. If Jose Garcia can simply walk across the Mexican border into the United States, what&#x27;s to prevent Osama Abdul from doing exactly the same?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Solving The Crisis - 1:  Shooting That Elephant</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/11/26/666617/-Solving-The-Crisis-1-Shooting-That-Elephant</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;We&#x27;re in the middle of a financial crisis rescue plan. &#x26;nbsp;Unfortunately, we&#x27;re only at the beginning of a deepening, monstrous financial crisis, unless something more creative is done, soon. &#x26;nbsp;So far, I&#x27;m not overawed by the actions that Treasury, the Federal Reserve and FDIC have taken. &#x26;nbsp;They&#x27;re going to run out of money long before they have any real effect on the credit markets, housing, or the world equity market, if they keep following the current strategy.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Way back, two months ago, on September 23, Princeton University had an Economics Department summit, with luminaries Paul Krugman, Alan Blinder and others, analyzing and explaining the crisis. &#x26;nbsp;It&#x27;s still available on YouTube &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://es.youtube.com/watch?v=Wj_JNwNbETA&#x22;&#x3E;[click here for an hour-plus presentation]&#x3C;/a&#x3E;. &#x26;nbsp;To cut to the chase, though, I&#x27;d recommend &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.portfolio.com/views/columns/wall-street/2008/10/15/Credit-Derivatives-Role-in-Crash&#x22;&#x3E;this article from Portfolio.com&#x3C;/a&#x3E;, titled &#x22;The $58 Trillion Elephant in the Room,&#x22; which gives an excellent overview of how the creation and incredible spread of unregulated Credit Default Swaps have really caused this credit freeze.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;So, let me tell you one way to help fix the financial crisis...&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Bush, the Republicans and the Lame Duck Session</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/11/15/661444/-Bush-the-Republicans-and-the-Lame-Duck-Session</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;To the frustration of almost all Americans and the entire world for that matter, Bush and many of the Congressional Republicans are entering into this &#x22;lame Duck&#x22; session in opposition to making government loans to the Big 3 auto makers which could save thousands of US jobs, and to any increase in US government aid to create jobs in rebuilding the nations failing infrastructure (water, sewer, bridges, etc.). &#x26;nbsp;They are hiding behind the classic Republican position of &#x22;Lass-e-fare&#x22; (probably spelled wrong) capitalism, that the private sector will fix all. &#x26;nbsp;But what are they really up to? &#x26;nbsp;Join me after the jump as I speculate on their true motivations.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Are We there Yet?</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/11/13/660281/-Are-We-there-Yet</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Have we achieved what we sought? Or are they going to slash and burn us on the way to the door?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I have read what you are saying, what your thoughts put to pen are saying to everyone. &#x26;nbsp;Victory!&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Seems we have forgotten that we elect so they can perform. &#x26;nbsp;That we elected a party of change and the victory is not yet ours. &#x26;nbsp;If it were, we would not be hearing about &#x22;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/11/12/MNCH143AFQ.DTL&#x22;&#x3E;Bailouts&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x22; and &#x22;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26994238/&#x22;&#x3E;rescue plans&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x22; Because once again, giving money to the rich, to eventually trickle down to the poor, DOES NOT WORK....&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Obama Shouldn&#x26;rsquo;t Dodge the Question About the Bailout&#x26;rsquo;s Impact on His Plans</title>

<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;The burning question the two debate moderators had for the candidates is: &#x26;nbsp;how will the costs of the economic bailout affect your proposed budget and spending? &#x26;nbsp;Why does Obama keep dancing around it? &#x26;nbsp;The answer seems simple to me: &#x26;nbsp;not that much. &#x26;nbsp;Here&#x27;s why . . .&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/10/3/618883/-The-bail-out-rescue-plan-and-why-I-hope-it-fails</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I do not wish the bail out plan to fail becuase I think it is not needed. &#x26;nbsp;I wish for it to fail because I do not think it is drafted correctly. &#x26;nbsp;Democrats have been forced into concessions that should not have been concessions.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>RetroVision Media: Senate Willing To Risk Pound of Flesh For Pound of Pork To Pass Bailout Bill</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/10/2/617928/-RetroVision-Media-Senate-Willing-To-Risk-Pound-of-Flesh-For-Pound-of-Pork-To-Pass-Bailout-Bill</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Last night the Senate passed it&#x26;#8217;s pork filled bailout bill, now being belatedly re-marketed as a rescue plan 74-25 with John McCain, Barack Obama and Joe Biden all present and all voting for it. With goodies like:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

* Manufacturers of kids&#x26;#8217; wooden arrows - $6 million.
* Puerto Rican and Virgin Is- lands rum producers - $192 million.
* Wool research.
* Auto-racing tracks - $128 million.
* Corporations operating in American Samoa - $33 million.
* Small- to medium-budget film and television productions - $10 million&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;We find all of the above, among many others we&#x26;#8217;ll discuss very troubling. With John McCain holding himself out to be a maverick, willing to travel the rough road to maintain his integrity, his convictions and his hard nosed stance against pork barrel politics, we find his vote to be another major contradiction of the image his handlers and marketers have fashioned for him.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Do They NOW Get Why &#x22;Big Speeches&#x22; Matter?</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/10/1/616384/-Do-They-NOW-Get-Why-Big-Speeches-Matter</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Ok, the McCain camp has had a pretty rough week so I won&#x27;t take any pleasure in rubbing salt into their wounds &#x3C;em&#x3E;(oh hell, who I am kidding-let&#x27;s go for it. They deserve it after all they have put us through)...&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;So here goes- &#x3C;em&#x3E;let&#x27;s start by reflecting on the all-important lesson that we learned this week: &#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The AMERICAN PEOPLE run this country, not the government. &#x26;nbsp;This is a democracy.
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;Legistlation will not pass without the people backing it. &#x3C;/strong&#x3E; It seems that some people may have forgotten that but they got a rude awakening this week.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Whether you were for the $700B bill or against it is irrelevant- the fact is that the bill did not pass because the American people stood up against it.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;So what does this have to do with Obama and &#x22;big speeches?&#x22; you may ask.
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;A heckuva lot. &#x26;nbsp;Follow me after the fold...&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Wednesday Night Senate Vote on Bailout/Rescue Plan (w/update)</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/9/30/616218/-Wednesday-Night-Senate-Vote-on-Bailout-Rescue-Plan-w-update</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I haven&#x27;t seen much on this here at DKos, and I find that kind of surprising. I&#x27;m not even going to pretend that I know what the hell I&#x27;m talking about when it comes to Wall Street. I have a retirement account with TIAA-CREFF that&#x27;s been sucking wind for the entire year; that&#x27;s about it. Don&#x27;t ask me if I understand it because I don&#x27;t. It&#x27;s not because I can&#x27;t, I just haven&#x27;t put the energy into it.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Anyway, having said all that, I really do not know what to believe and what not to believe about this whole bailout/rescue plan. Obama&#x27;s taking it seriously, and I guess that means that we should too, but I still have my doubts. If I&#x27;m reading this right, it&#x27;s a lose-lose proposition for Democrats. &#x26;nbsp;I know the Progressive caucus has put forward an alternative, but I don&#x27;t know enough on financial matters to really be able to judge it. I hope someone with some background will provide us with some analysis soon.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;My biggest concern right now, however, lies with the scheduled Wednesday vote in the Senate on a beefed-up Paulsen, Pelosi, Frank...et al bill. I don&#x27;t understand it. Maybe someone can help me, but I don&#x27;t understand why the House Dems have added this package of taxbreaks to the bill. They seem almost unrelated to the problem at hand.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>All You Can Eat Politics...It Doesn&#x27;t Get Any Better Than This!</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/9/25/610046/-All-You-Can-Eat-Politics-It-Doesn-t-Get-Any-Better-Than-This</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E; &#x26;nbsp; &#x26;nbsp; Whats worse, in a sense, than a slow news day, or even a &#x22;no news&#x22; day?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E; &#x26;nbsp; &#x26;nbsp; A twenty-four hour period where the stories hit so fast and furious, and in such a way that you could almost compare the news cycle to something of a &#x22;controlled demolition&#x22;.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E; &#x26;nbsp; &#x26;nbsp; Yesterday, into today, has been exactly that kind of situation.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E; &#x26;nbsp; &#x26;nbsp; &#x3C;strong&#x3E;Johnny McNewsBlackout &#x3C;/strong&#x3E;tried to further limit media access to &#x3C;strong&#x3E;Casper The Friendly Running Mate.&#x3C;/strong&#x3E; The Media revolted, and said that if John Boy&#x27;s &#x22;Stealth Veep&#x22; wouldn&#x27;t come out from under her sheet...what was left of the relevant media bubble wouldn&#x27;t have to wait for the public to burst. The Networks would be only to happy to do it for them.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>SEND MORE MONEY, OR THE RICH WILL SCORCH THE EARTH!</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/9/23/608337/-SEND-MORE-MONEY-OR-THE-RICH-WILL-SCORCH-THE-EARTH</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Abstract: The Treasury and Federal Reserve plan of September 23 2008 is a scheme to save and please many of the richest institutions and individuals of the USA, the very authors and beneficiaries of the present crisis. The People of the USA should instead insist to nationalize all and any financial institution that needs help and is of public interest (like AIG). Others should be left to fail (like Lehman).

<title>Henry Paulson Is The Problem. Not The Solution</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/9/23/608219/-Henry-Paulson-Is-The-Problem-Not-The-Solution</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Since when do we hire &#x26;nbsp;the arsonist to put out the fire?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Henry Paulson is not the solution. He is the problem. Paulson was CEO of Goldman-Sachs, the former investment bank. He made $700 million dollars, much of it still invested in the firm. &#x26;nbsp;Goldman is one of the firms that will be rescued by the plan he proposes.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;This is the guy who is going to save us from the banking catastrophe? What is more in Paulson&#x27;s interest? Saving the value of his stock by preventing Goldman from going under? Or figuring out a way that Joe Sixpack can keep his house ?
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;img alt=&#x22; title=&#x22; src=&#x22;http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e16/organicdemocrat/paulson.jpg&#x22; /&#x3E;
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;Paulson is exactly the kind of robber baron that has become rich by gaming the system. Now he wants unchecked authority to save the country from the crisis he helped create.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>A Modest Proposal to Make the Bailout Plan Fair (and Maybe even Profitable)</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/9/21/605586/-A-Modest-Proposal-to-Make-the-Bailout-Plan-Fair-and-Maybe-even-Profitable</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;Buying illiquid mortgage-backed securities from financial firms might make sense - if the institutions are forced to include equity positions or stock options as part of a package deal.&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;Sopranos Translation: if we&#x27;re going to bail these crooks out, at least let&#x27;s get a piece of their action.&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
