<title>You can save a life today. This is how...</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2018/12/28/1822150/-You-can-save-a-life-today-This-is-how</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;As a public service announcement during the Holiday Season...&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Given the thoughtfulness and care for others&#xA0;of this community, I am quite certain there are many here, probably thousands that routinely donate blood. Those of you that do may have received a note encouraging donation recently. In general, people donate less over the holidays, and increasing demand is not uncommon.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;A few facts:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;1. The average healthy adult body&#xA0;contains&#xA0;10-12 units of blood&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;2. Donated blood is ABO and RH typed, and is tested for certain infectious pathogens&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;3. The most common blood type is O+, the rarest is AB-&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;4. In general, blood donations can be made 3 times per year&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;5. O- is known as the universal donor and is especially life-saving for trauma victims&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;6. Over 35,000 units of blood cells are transfused every day in the US&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;7. Sickle cell, trauma, and cancer patients depend on donated blood to save their lives&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;8.&#xA0;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.aabb.org/tm/donation/Pages/Blood-Bank-Locator.aspx&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;Here&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#xA0;is where you can donate blood or blood products, and eligibility requirements.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p class=&#x22;is-empty-p&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Thank-you for your gift of life.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Once upon a time in Chicago, Part IV: Norm Coleman</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/10/3/618822/-Once-upon-a-time-in-Chicago-Part-IV-Norm-Coleman</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;In the fourth and final part of my Once upon a time in Chicago fairy tale trilogy, I will finally tie Sen. Norm Coleman into this sordid tale of lies, possible plagiarism, incorrect first aid training and lack of due diligence. Remember that this whole tale illustrates Norm&#x27;s willingness and ability to conduct oversight. In other words, Norm is to oversight what bagels are to sushi ... they just don&#x27;t mix. To recap ...&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Once upon a time in Chicago, Part III: The Heimlich Maneuver</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/10/1/617321/-Once-upon-a-time-in-Chicago-Part-III-The-Heimlich-Maneuver</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;There is one final aspect to the fairy tale I&#x27;ve been telling you for the last two days that I need to relate before I can tie Sen. Norm Coleman into this mess: &#x26;nbsp;The Heimlich Maneuver. &#x26;nbsp;The Heimlich Maneuver is as well-known as Kleenex. &#x26;nbsp;Everybody knows its the thing you do when somebody&#x27;s choking. &#x26;nbsp;The only problem with the Heimlich is that the Red Cross no longer considers it &#x26;nbsp;the gold standard, but SALF still pushes it.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Below the fold I&#x27;ll provide a recap and details.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Once upon a time in Chicago, Part II (Updated)</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/9/30/616210/-Once-upon-a-time-in-Chicago-Part-II-Updated</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Yesterday, I told you a &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.mnblue.com/once+upon+a+time+in+chicago&#x22;&#x3E;fairy tale about a Chicago non-profit&#x3C;/a&#x3E;. &#x26;nbsp;Its founder lied about her credentials and her daughter&#x27;s death that led to the founding of the organization. &#x26;nbsp;The Save A Life Foundation&#x27;s (SALF) mission is &#x22;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.salf.org&#x22;&#x3E;to provide vital first aid skills to our nation&#x26;#8217;s youth&#x3C;/a&#x3E;,&#x22; but they are unable to account for how many kids they&#x27;ve actually trained in the Chicago metro and have made unreasonably high estimates, according to the head of the Chicago Schools. &#x26;nbsp;Furthermore, a temp has alleged that they plagiarized an EMT training manual.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I bring this fairy tale to your attention because I want highlight another fairy tale -- Senator Norm Coleman&#x27;s claim to the Republican Champion of Oversight. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;(Updated: &#x26;nbsp;see below)&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Once upon a time in Chicago</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/9/29/614949/-Once-upon-a-time-in-Chicago</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Once upon a time there was a Republican Senator from Minnesota who was a champion of oversight. &#x26;nbsp;He rooted out corruption, graft and waste at every level of our government. &#x26;nbsp;He was known throughout the realm for his endeavors. &#x26;nbsp;But this is a fairy tale, and Sen. Norm Coleman &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.mnblue.com/norm_coleman_weasel_meter_oversight&#x22;&#x3E;only believes in oversight under very limited circumstances&#x3C;/a&#x3E;. &#x26;nbsp;Before I can tell you the latest way that Norm doesn&#x27;t &#x3C;em&#x3E;&#x22;do&#x22;&#x3C;/em&#x3E; oversight, I need to set it up with another fairy tale.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Once upon a time in Chicago, a woman started a non-profit because her daughter had died tragically and preventably in a car crash. &#x26;nbsp;Carol Spizzirri&#x27;s response to losing her daughter is noble. &#x26;nbsp;The non-profit&#x27;s mission is &#x22;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.salf.org&#x22;&#x3E;to provide vital first aid skills to our nation&#x26;#8217;s youth&#x3C;/a&#x3E;.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Just remember that this is a Republican fairy tale ... little of what they claim is true.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
