From California to New York, the notion of “electability” is on the minds of many Democratic voters, with state polls demonstrating support for candidate X from voter group Y being zealously shared by followers trying to bolster the position of their horse in the race.</span></p> <p><span>No matter who is nominated for 2020, California’s liberals will likely coalesce around almost any Democratic Party nominee. Here’s an exploration of why they’ll be so eager to do so.</span></p> <h2>It all comes down to ousting Trump</h2> <p><span>The easiest way to explain why liberals across California and the broader United States will coalesce around any nominee is by demonstrating that the 2020 election will be entirely centered on the notion of ousting President Trump for office. Polls may continue to find the presidential race in California is wide open, but the truth of the matter is it won’t make a huge difference who’s nominated; voters across the state are more concerned about removing Trump and “restoring civility” than they are about policy details or left-leaning agendas.</span></p> <p><span>For proof of that, look no farther than the case of Joe Biden, someone who’s campaign has been defined by continuous gaffes but who’s maintained tremendous amounts of support across the nation. Billionaires have injected huge sums of money into the race while left-leaning candidates have assembled massive grassroots coalitions, yet Joe Biden’s massive lead in the primary has been retained and doesn’t appear to be going anywhere. This is because voters are buying his message of “civility” and restoring things to their normal balance, despite the fact that many voters and candidates to Biden’s left are infuriated by that message.</span></p> <p><span>The truth of the matter is that large swathes of the country are chiefly concerned with restoring “balance” to our political order and removing the tumultuous commander-in-tweet who’s continuously demonstrated his unfitness for office. That’s why liberals in states like California will find themselves agreeing with moderates in battlegrounds like Ohio; they may have a desire to see left-leaning policies implemented, but they, like the moderates, mostly just want Trump gone and will take that over anything else.</span></p> <p><span>Any realistic analysis of American democracy has to contend with the fact that most voters are simply not that tuned into what’s occurring around the nation. People don’t ceaselessly consume the news, and are instead preoccupied with jobs, bills, families, and hobbies. As such, they don’t care too much about left-leaning policies largely because they’re usually ignorant of their existence in the first place – they want a “better chance at a brighter future” and a leader who will tell them everything is going to be okay. That’s why the 2020 Democratic nominee will enjoy widespread support regardless of their left-leaning policy chops. I do have some sympathy with the argument that DACA rightfully ought to be the domain of Congress.</p> <p>That said this executive order has been shown to conform to precedent and needs to be in place until such time as Congress acts. We all know they will not act while Republicans control that body however. That is fundamentally why we are where we are at today.</p> <p>I believe Obama would agree this ought to be the purview of Congress as well.</p> <p>Republicans are taking the legalistic approach on this issue. These kids are not properly documented, therefore they are in violation of the law. I would love the thoughts of an attorney on this point I am about to make.</p> <p>if you take the legalistic approach does that not make the young people that fall under the protections afforded by DACA the victims of a crime rather than the perpetrator?</p> <p>their legal guardian brought them here before they had any legal standing in our system to chose otherwise after all.</p> <p>Under our system of laws, what ought to be the status of the victim of such a crime?</p> <p>I am not aware of any other instance in our system where the victim, under the law, is held culpable for that crime at any point. This election is bigger than republican vs democrat, Clinton vs Trump, even the Supreme Court — this election is about much more than that — the most evil and awful of all — hate.</p> <p>I don’t know why I didn’t realize the depth of the message earlier, especially when we watched the Democratic convention that let the world see a sea of “Love trumps hate” signs. I don’t know why it didn’t crystallize after Hillary delivered her speech about Breitbart and alt-right being at the core of Trump’s message. But yesterday it became absolutely clear to me that we have finally entered the phase in this election when the real meaning of this election, the purpose which Clinton campaign understood and embraced, is to defeat the message of the deplorable: racist, xenophobic, homophobic agents of hate. </p> <p>I’m surprised at myself, a person of color, and an immigrant, that I could not articulate this point so clearly before. I’ve always felt that way but for some reason I could not find the proper words to define what’s at stake in a simple answer. I know what that answer is now. Hate must be defeated this election as strongly as we can as a nation, as people, as fellow human beings to ensure that it does not stay the norm it has become in during this campaign. </p> <p>To me this election is of existential importance. I know what will happen to people like me if Trump were to win. I really do not want to spell it out because even thinking about brings extreme pain. So with that understanding the choice should be clear: you are either for hate or against it. Those who support Trump and his message of hate (loudly or silently) say so much about who they are as people. To me they are not just Trump supporters, republicans or conservatives — they are (whether they want to admit it or not) the enablers of hate. And those who fail to accept the importance of what’s at stake for us by choosing a “more pure” third or forth choice still fail everyone whom these hateful groups want to hurt and will act as enablers of hate too. As people we’ve come to a fork in the road and must make the choice.
