White Police Officers save a Black Life... MORE OF THIS PLEASE!

How many black lives have been destroyed by institutionalized racism in majority-white police departments? Too fucking many.

It's horrifying and dispiriting. Shaun King, an excellent diarist here on Dailykos, has recently published the tragic story of Samuel Harrell, a mentally-challenged African-American inmate at New York's Fishkill Correctional Facilty who was beaten to death by mostly white prison guards.

But occasionally, occasionally, there are stories of good police officers who do their jobs right. In Seattle a few days ago, for example, several white police officers pulled over an African-American man who was reported driving erratically. When the driver told the police officers that his wife was in labor in the back seat, the officers called an ambulance and assisted the woman with her birth. When the baby was delivered she was not breathing. The police officer cleared out the baby's mouth and stimulated the baby to start her respiratory drive. The baby started crying and, according to the article, is currently quite stable.

"You have helped deliver a precious gift," the family wrote to the police in a note. "We are so grateful."
