In a tough re-election fight against Republican Susan Sweetser in 1996, then Rep Bernie Sanders got a key endorsement when feminist writer and activist Gloria Steinem came to a campaign event Burlington. The event was to highlight his support among progressive women. When it was Steinem’s turn to speak she began with these words:

"I'm only here today to make Bernie Sanders an honorary woman."

Bernie went on to comfortably beat Sweetser and later called the event with Steinem "the nicest moment of the campaign."

I understand that Gloria Steinem is 100% behind Hillary in this election, but she does recognize Sanders is 100% behind Women’s Rights.
