Yesterday, before the "Access Hollywood" story broke, I heard a television “pundit” wonder aloud whether the next debate would be the charm. Will Trump change? Will he correct course? Will he pivot? My first thought was that Republican Party (the Anti-Democracy Party) must laugh every time the media brings this up, as if this wasn’t the presidency we’re talking about, as if one restrained debate performance would nullify the dysfunctions he has so prominently displayed throughout the entirety of his life.
Still, I knew that if he did, somehow, perhaps with the aid of chemistry, pull off a not completely unhinged performance in the next debate, if he “pivoted” in the phony lexicon of the media, Republicans (The Anti-Democracy Party) would fall over themselves yelling, “There! There! See that? He can be President.” And the media would, in all probability, listen to them seriously, discuss their claim seriously, and seriously pronounce it a game changer.
Now, we have video of him with his ubermisogynist ego (and neediness) in full display. But this cannot have surprised anyone. The timing, the specific disclosure, the stunning undeniably of it would have been a surprise, but no one, especially establishment politicians, could have been surprised at the content. These politicians all were part of the pretense, the horrendous and dangerous lie that he’ll be fine once he pivots. They all used it for cover while knowingly laboring to put a dangerously unqualified clown in the presidency of the United States for sake of the Party (The Anti-Democracy Party).
So, will this video change anything? All the hoopla was, as always, generated by the media more than by any grass-roots uprising, and the media likely will find some other shinny object to obsess over tomorrow. And Trump’s done as bad as this on a regular basis, including, at a minimum, his attempts to undermine our electoral process with innuendo and conspiracy theories, and his stiffing subcontractors, small businesses, and defenseless workers. His “apology” screamed insincerity while making it clear that nothing will change except the depth to which he will sink. He could not even issue a clean apology without trying to drag others into the mud, without pretending it all was just a distraction, and without saying, explicitly, that the mud was about to get much deeper.
It’s up to Democrats to kill this pivot foolishness, or will be back upon us in no time. It is years too late for him to “pivot.” We know exactly who he is, and no single performance, no matter how polished, will wash off that stench.
And it’s too late for the Republican Party (The Anti-Democracy Party) to walk away from him. It is too late for Paul Ryan. It is too late for Mitch McConnell. It is too late even if they both were not still trying to hedge their bets. And Representative Jason Chaffetz deserves no credit and no respect for turning fully against Trump, not at this stage and not for lying about Clinton as he does so. These people are despicable.
More than that, these people, along with forty-plus percent of the electorate, have lost contact with reality. Trump, his Gish-Galloping surrogates, and a profit-driven, craven, and incompetent media have done this to us. Republicans (The Anti-Democracy Party) and much of the media now will try to compound that sin. Democrats must not allow that. Anytime anyone talks about a pivot or change or display of presidential character, anytime anyone pretends that Trump is a candidate to be taken seriously, the campaign needs to point out that it’s much too late for that, that if it ever did happen, it would be a compete and absolute lie, just like everything else Trump does or says.
