Republican vice presidential candidate and man reconsidering his life choices Mike Pence went on Meet the Press this morning to reassure the American public that his ticket would, in fact, respect the results of the November election no matter what.
Actually I'm overstating that. Pence went on Meet the Press to whine that the press was shamefully ignoring the latest Wikileaks dumps and the press is unfair and why doesn't the press have anyone like Mike Pence on but sure, if you're going to press the point, Mike Pence can assure America his ticket won't be calling for the violent overthrow of the government if their manchild nominee loses the race as everyone predicts he will.
DICKERSON: Another thing [Trump is] saying is that the election is rigged. My question is, is that a responsible thing for a candidate to say?
PENCE: Well, I think what Donald Trump is talking about is frankly what appears to be the monolithic support of the national media for Hillary Clinton's campaign, their willful ignorance about the avalanche of hard evidence. [...]
DICKERSON: But Governor, is it a responsible thing—
PENCE: We'll respect the outcome of this election, John. Well, look, let me be very clear. Donald Trump said in the first debate that we'll respect the will of the American people in this election. The peaceful transfer of power is a hallmark of American history. And elections really get tough. But the American people are getting awful tired of this two on one fight with many of you in the national media doing half of Hillary Clinton's work for her every day. [...]
First, let's all recognize that it's a wee bit abnormal for a vice presidential nominee to have to reassure voters that despite what his own running mate is saying, there will be a "peaceful transfer of power" if he loses.
Second, Mike Pence may still be writing checks here his running mate can't cash. Trump famously shot down Pence's reassurances about his campaign's stance on Russia during the last debate; he may very well undercut Pence on this one as well.
So someone should probably ask Trump directly. Just to make sure. The Meet the Press panel afterwards wasn’t convinced either.
