When someone hates you because of who you are, there is virtually nothing you can do to make them like you. President Obama came into office naively believing he could win over the hearts of Republicans by bending over backwards and placating them at every turn. His decision to retain Republican James Comey as FBI Director, was part of that plan as was his decision to retain Bob Gates from the Bush Administration as Secretary of Defense during his first term (and their are many more high profile Republicans in his cabinet).

President Obama has appointed more members of the opposing party in high levels of his cabinet than any other President in recent memory. Obama has offered more than just olive branches to Republicans — he’s given up whole trees. What did he get for all this effort? Unprecedented Republican obstruction, unbridled hate and racism — just an overall climate of disrespect of derision of him as a person. This has to be worst investment ever by a president.

Now as Comey goes out of his way to give his fellow Republicans an assist in their flailing campaign I’m sure the President must be looking back with some regrets at this folly of an appointment. Victory on November 8th would not just be a victory for Hillary, it would be a victory for the Obama legacy.

In an ironic twist, President Obama has inadvertently created the greatest threat to his legacy by virtue of him been nice to the people who plotted to destroy him from day one. James Comey was his olive branch to Republicans. Instead of appreciating the President’s kind gesture, the cunning Republicans took that olive branch, sharpened it and are now trying to use it as a weapon against him.
