• In case you missed it, President Obama gave Vice President Biden the Presidential Medal of Freedom:
• Scientists join the resistance with archiving projects to maintain access during anti-science Trump regime:
There are several different archiving projects, many of them being run in partnership with the Environmental Data and Governance Initiative (EDGI), a group founded as a direct response to Trump’s election. The movement is informed by previous actions taken by conservative administrations in the US and Canada, as well as the antiscience rhetoric of Trump and his cabinet picks. The George W. Bush administration systematically changed scientists’ press releases, misrepresented scientific findings to Congress, neglected or deleted information on government websites, and dismantled the Environmental Protection Agency’s library system. Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s administration deleted or changed climate information on the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources website, and former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper restricted government scientists’ access to the press. Researchers expect to see similar measures under Trump.
• How to change minds when facts won’t do the job.
• California mobilizes against Trump regime, and it’s more than rhetoric:
"One thing that should be made very clear is that one election won't change the values of the state of California," Kevin de León, the Senate president pro tempore, told Mother Jones. "What we would say to the incoming Trump administration is that we hope you find value in what we do in California—by growing the economy, creating real jobs that can be verified, reducing our carbon footprint, respecting immigrants for who they are, and recognizing that diversity, a rich mosaic of different hues, is actually a strength, not a weakness."
• Two Chinese companies plan to build giant solar farm at Chernobyl: They estimate the one-gigawatt solar power plant built on 6,200 acres in the exclusion zone to the south of the Chernobyl plant will cost a billion dollars. Neither the Chinese nor the Ukrainians have announced what safety measures will be taken in building or operating the plant in an area of radioactive contamination.
• EPA and California Air Resources Board accuse Chrysler of selling dirty diesels:
The accusation covers Jeep Grand Cherokees (from 2014 to 2016) and Dodge Ram 1500 trucks powered by 3-liter diesel engines. It’s 104,000 cars in total.
“Once again, a major automaker made the business decision to skirt the rules and got caught,” CARB chief Mary D. Nichols said in a statement. For its part, Fiat Chrysler issues its own statement, saying company officials believe the vehicles meet all requirements, have provided “voluminous information” in response to EPA requests, and that the carmaker “intends to work with the incoming administration to present its case and resolve this matter fairly and equitably.”
• Poor black children far more likely than poor white children to attend high-poverty schools:
• Michelle Goldberg rips Mike Pompeo, the fanatic who will soon be CIA chief:
If a normal Republican president had nominated a figure like this to head the country’s major foreign intelligence agency, there likely would have been a lot of attention paid to his apocalyptic religiosity and Manichaean worldview. Amid the fire hose of lunacy that is the Trump transition, however, Pompeo’s extremism has been overlooked. It’s worth pausing to appreciate the fact that America’s CIA will shortly be run by a man who appears to view American foreign policy as a vehicle for holy war
• On today’s Kagro in the Morning show, Armando joins us again to sum up the new rules for DC: there are no rules. In our lightning round of weekend smartness: yet another NH legislator drops a loaded gun; neo-Nazis can’t make the trains run on time; Marine Le Pen’s in town for the taco bowls.
