So, I’ve now read my thousandth article/blog post about how Democrats shouldn’t alienate Trump voters. The people who write these are no doubt wonderful people I would be proud to call my friends, and I don’t want to bag on them. I can’t help but notice though that I’ve seen exactly zero articles/blog posts from conservatives about how they should not alienate Clinton or Sanders voters.
In fact, Republicans have gone the other way, and it’s worked spectacularly. They traffic in tribalism and fear of the other, and their voters turn out for midterm elections and eat our lunch. What’s to be done about it?
I hope that most of us don’t want to traffic in fear of the other. Still, I think it would behoove us to generate a strong party identity and not be too soft on people who don’t support progressive policy. We need to fight for things and that means that we are against the other side in a clear and decisive way. I don’t think anyone has to hate Trump voters if they don’t feel like doing so, but they did screw things up spectacularly and I don’t think we gain anything by avoiding pointing that out. If they want to switch to our side they actually should have to switch, not have our side become soft and mushy enough to include them.
