Weekend Open Thread Dec. 16, 2017

So, what’s to eat? When you hit the trail, what are your favorite meals to cook, snacks or treats? Do you keep it low-key, or enjoy cooking something special in the great outdoors?  Any guilty pleasures or things you wouldn’t be caught dead eating in other circumstances (SPAM or roast beef hash anyone?)

Blueberry pancakes
Blueberry pancakes anyone?

I’m up early, but the rest of my camping crew often rolls out of their sleeping bags at varying times over about two hours, which makes cooking something elaborate for breakfast and keeping it hot hard to do. So, I usually keep breakfast really simple: boil hot water for coffee/cocoa and oatmeal, supplemented with fruit or pre-baked goods. It’s quick and easy clean up, but it does make me envious when the smell of pancakes or bacon wafts in from other campsites. We do try to more ambitious cooking for lunch or dinner.

So what are your favorite camping foods, recipes or hacks for good eating? This is an open thread, so post away on food, snacks, or any other camping topic you’re hungry for.
