Calls to censure Donald Trump are starting again. Censure in a non-binding rebuke of unacceptable conduct and is defined as:
A formal, public reprimand for an infraction or violation.
His latest vulgar comment certainly qualifies as a censurable action along with his refusal to reveal his finances, and violation of the emoluments clause. Although censure has no direct effect on his actions as President, it does cast a cloud over his conduct. And, the political fallout will have both present and future repercussions. What would a censure resolution accomplish:
- It would be a public rebuke to Trumps present and future conduct.
- It would reduce the possibility of his re-election. No censured Senator or Representative was ever re-elected.
- It would require the Congress to re-assume some of the duties they ceded to the President over the past 80 years.
- It would identify the Members of Congress that support a measure of decorum in the conduct of the Government, and those who do not.
- It could shore up the Republican Party in the upcoming elections if they could show even a minimal modicum of decorum. Unlikely!
- It would be a slap in the face rebuke to the public who blindly voted for him out of Party loyalty, change or the racist, white supremacy that now permeates the Republican Party.
- It would force Congress to put up or shut up, on something, anything.
Will it happen? I’m not holding my breath. They will only censure if there is sufficient public pressure to do so. Another issue where you need to contact your Senators and Representative.
