The last time Republicans shut down the government, in 2013, the shutdown stretched for more than two weeks and was a major blow to the entire U.S. economy, costing an estimated $24 billion. While many of the heaviest burdens fell on people who were already vulnerable, they spread across the entire population:
While the Trump administration is working to keep national parks open, at least in theory, we could see many of the 2013 shutdown’s other effects replicated if Republicans continue on the path to shutdown.
