So...having read a large number of articles about gerrymandering, I’ve been seeing quite a few right wingers in the comment section saying something along the lines of “We’re a Republic, not a Democracy!!111” I seem to recall reading the same thing when people were complaining about how Trump (and Bush before him) were elected despite losing the popular vote. I gather this is a meme in right wing circles that allows them to wave away our failures of democracy.
Here’s the thing: a Republic is just a country where they have elected leaders. That’s all it is. It’s a system in contrast to a monarchy or other system where rulership is hereditary or something. Observe this dictionary definition:
Republic: a state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch
Now observe this dictionary definition of Democracy
Democracy: a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.
So yeah...shut up your face.
Also, just because Nazi has “socialist” in it doesn’t mean Nazi’s are left wing. A party can call themselves whatever the heck they want, and we judge them by how they govern and not the name.
