Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) gets away with being called a "moderate" Republican because she continues to get crappy coverage like this tweet from The Hill: "Collins suggests she won't vote for Supreme Court nominee who doesn't support Roe v. Wade."
Is that what she actually said in the linked article? No. Not at all. This is what she said.
"I view Roe v. Wade as being settled law. It's clearly precedent and I always look for judges who respect precedent," Collins told reporters on Wednesday, referencing the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion nationwide. […]
Asked if she had concerns about a potential nominee due to their potential for being the swing vote on abortion-related cases, Collins demurred, but signaled she preferred someone moderate.
"That obviously would be my preference but what I'm most looking for is a Justice that will follow the law and the constitution," she added.
Anybody who Trump is going to name to the Supreme Court isn't going to give a tinker's damn what Susan Collins thinks is "settled law" or what her "preference" is. And she knows that. She's been around this block. Again. And again. And again. And every time she gets away with acting the moderate standing up for women, for the LGBTQ community, and an actual functioning representative democracy.
This time the stakes are far too high for anyone—Planned Parenthood or Human Rights Campaign, who've both recently given her awards, or the traditional media or her constituents—to give her a pass this time.
