Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) is very concerned about that whole summit thing that happened this week. She has very sincere hopes that Donald Trump not be Donald Trump anymore. "I believe that he needs to send a very clear message to the Russians particularly President Putin that we know for a fact that they attempted to interfere in the 2016 election. […] President Putin is not our friend. He is our adversary and I would hope that the president would start treating him that way."
She also "hopes the president makes it clear the United States will not tolerate Russian attempts to meddle with our elections." As if the occupier of the oval office would do any such thing out of the goodness of his own heart. As though the Senate of the United State was totally incapable of doing anything to influence that outcome she so desires.
Meanwhile, she's more than happy to consider giving her vote to allow Trump to make another lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court, feigning the responsibility she says she feels as a senator. ""I take this responsibility very seriously. I am amazed that some of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle who took a position on the nominee before he was even nominated before we even knew his identity. That's not the approach I am taking. I am doing a thorough review of the extensive paper trail."
Pfft.
She played the same game with the last Supreme Court nominee from a legitimate president—Merrick Garland. "Considering a Supreme Court nominee is one of the Senate’s most important constitutional responsibilities," she intoned. "That is why I have called for the Senate to proceed to the next step by holding public hearings." Also, "My meeting today with Judge Garland left me more convinced than ever that the process should proceed. Public hearings before the Judiciary Committee would allow that the issues that we explored in my office today to be further reviewed and analyzed by the Senate."
And what did she do to make all that regular order happen? Zilch. Nada. Not a goddamned thing. Collins is not going to take her job seriously unless we force her to. It worked once before, on Trumpcare. We have to make it happen again.
The people of Maine need to call her on it. Directly. Every day. At her office numbers: (207) 622-8414, (207) 945-0417, (207) 283-1101, (207) 493-7873, (207) 784-6969, (207) 780-3575, (202) 224-2523. In person this weekend while she's back home.
