The Presidency has always been a platform to espouse political and policy positions to the public. The term Bully Pulpit originated with President Theodore Roosevelt. The term originally meant excellent, superb or wonderful.
Now, with Donald Trump, it has taken on a more sinister and, yes, evil and dangerous meaning. Trump has used the presidency to more than castigate or excoriate his ‘perceived’ enemies. He has taken to some very vile name calling — Lying Hillary, Pocahontas, Little Marco, etc — to paint them as enemies, not the opposition who, in America, has a right to espouse a different viewpoint. And the brunt of his name calling, and bullying, seems to be towards women.
His supporters are now engaging in bomb attempts on his ‘perceived enemies.’ And, it will not stop until he stops engaging in bullying language and tactics. That appears unlikely, given his past behavior and comments at the Rally last night.
The question is: How do you deal with a bully when the Bully is the President? He not only will not stop name calling and bullying, he does it because he exults in it. Translation: He gets his rocks off on it. The Bully Pulpit has now become the BULLY PULPIT.
What can be done? Very little at this point. The only options are the 25th Amendment or Impeachment, or getting him to resign: all of which are unlikely as long as the Republicans are in charge. This is why the upcoming election on Nov 6 is so important. We the public, must send an unmistakable signal the Trumps conduct is unacceptable, and will be contained. Otherwise, his bullying will reach new levels of unacceptable conduct.
VOTE like your life and future depends in it. IT DOES!
