I’ve had a number of people tell me, both on this site and on my Facebook feed, that we have to back Biden because his poll numbers are best against Trump. Only beating Trump matters.
I don’t buy this. Even ignoring the fact that Biden is riding his name recognition a year and a half before the election and has nowhere to go but down, it is incorrect to say that beating Trump is the only thing that matters. Millions of people are going to die of climate change if we don’t do something about it extra soon. Is Biden the right person to have in office, potentially for 8 years, in order to stave this off? I really don’t think that he is, so electing Biden is likely to mean a lot more people die than have to if we elected a more progressive president. Do we not care about those people? Even if you think he’s better on climate change than I am, do you think he’s going to be a strong champion of women’s health care? Universal health care? That he is going to strongly oppose private prisons? All these things are life and death issues, and if we choose Biden we are not doing our best to care for those people. I submit that caring only about getting Trump out of office is a position of privilege.
