Polls are now closed in Louisiana, where voters are choosing candidates in races for statewide office and the legislature, with the contest for governor headlining the day. Under the state’s all-party primary system, candidates must take a majority of the vote in order to avoid a runoff, which would take place between the top-two vote-getters on Nov. 16, if necessary.
The leading contenders in the governor’s race are Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards and two Republicans, Rep. Ralph Abraham and wealthy businessman Eddie Rispone. Edwards alone has the chance to win outright, as he’s consistently polled in the upper 40s, while Rispone and Abraham are both hoping to force a second round.
