More than 100 House Democrats are demanding Stephen Miller’s immediate removal from the White House following the release of emails that reveal the Trump adviser’s close association with an anti-immigrant hate group and further expose his radical views, writing in a letter that “a documented white nationalist has no place in any presidential administration, and especially not in such an influential position.”
That position has been to create and help implement anti-immigrant policy that has more recently resulted in the obliteration of our asylum system. Following a new rule seeking to send vulnerable asylum-seekers to Guatemala, one long-time asylum officer said “it appears that virtually no one crossing our border will qualify for asylum, except in exceptional circumstances. It’s like a virtual wall.” These policies are killing families.
“Miller’s emails and the sentiments expressed in them are incompatible with public service and render him unfit to shape any policy—immigration or otherwise,” said Reps. Don Beyer, Barbara Lee, Ilhan Omar, Bonnie Watson Coleman, Bill Pascrell Jr., Norma Torres, Bill Foster, and Chellie Pingree, who led the letter. “We refuse to tolerate white nationalism and xenophobia in the White House or elsewhere in the United States. Mr. Miller must be fired immediately.”
While groups and advocates have long been calling for Miller’s removal from the White House over his policies of mass deportation and incarceration of brown and black people that have been clearly rooted in white supremacist ideology, these demands have become louder following the Southern Poverty Law Center’s release of Miller’s emails, with nearly 60 national groups saying the white supremacist needs to go.
“Supporters of white supremacists and neo-Nazis should not be allowed to serve at any level of government, let alone in the White House,” their letter said. “Stephen Miller has stoked bigotry, hate, and division with his extreme political rhetoric and policies throughout his career. The recent exposure of his deep-seated racism provides further proof that he is unfit to serve and should immediately leave his post.”
