I had a long day at work, and I must admit I was surprised this hasn’t already been noted in another diary. For a party that has placed diversity as a core value, we should give ourselves some credit for once again overcoming small minded politics. In whatever messy way they got there, Democrats in a mid-western state in the United States of America said they wanted their next president to be a gay American. That’s not nothing.
I get that this site is largely Warren country, but even if he isn’t your guy, moments like this shouldn’t go by unnoticed.
- It was 1987 (a 30 year old adult ago) that homosexuality was removed from the DSM, banishing the notion that it was a mental health disorder.
- It was 2003 (a teenager ago) that the Supreme Court struck down anti-sodomy laws, which effectively decriminalized homosexuality in America.
- It was in 2015 (a toddler ago) that gay marriage became legal in the United States.
- To this day being gay is not a protected class in many states or at a federal level.
I am not gay myself, so I can’t say whether Mayor Pete is gay enough or the right kind of gay, which are both ridiculous things I’ve seen said about him. But regardless of that nonsense, I am proud of my party. We remain committed to a more inclusive America, and we do so with our actions.
