It would seem that Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY-16) is ready to go home as he appears to be committing political suicide-by-stupidity. Tuesday, he was caught in a classic “hot mic” snafu, as he attended an event about race and police brutality:
Rep. Eliot Engel became engulfed in yet another controversy on Tuesday after he was overheard on a “hot mic” saying he only sought press attention at a local event on the unrest over police brutality because of his upcoming primary threat.
“If I didn't have a primary, I wouldn’t care,” the New York Democrat told Ruben Diaz Jr., the Bronx borough president, as he asked for time to speak at a news conference on local vandalism.
He followed that with the pretty standard backtracking, but I think it’s safe to say, primary or not, that he really doesn’t care, at all, primary or not. Period. Add in that he was recently called out by the Atlantic for not having been to his district since, well, since a long time? Yah, he’s done. He’s been in Congress since 1989. That’s enough.
His opponent in the June 23 primary, Jamaal Bowman, is a great choice. He checks all the boxes. He was just endorsed by another of the D-primary candidates who recently dropped out of the primary and has momentum. He’s a Dad, Husband, Teacher, small-donation-driven candidate who has shown he cares about the city. Isn’t it about time this part of New York City, right next door to AOC’s district, got the representation it deserved, not the continued representation (being charitable) of a man who, while he has done his share, clearly has lost the thread?
