Tom Daschle needs to resign as Minority Leader

Face it, the Dems need someone who can take the hardline on this Administration, who can force discipline in the ranks (bet US Senators like to be referred to as ranks, eh?), who can be out there campaigning in the presidential election.

Daschle cannot do this. He is crippled by his heavily conservative state. He has to have at the back of his mind, the vision of Tom Foley, Speaker of the House, voted out by his E. Wa constituency in the early '90's. E. WA is a lot like S. Dakota in demographics.

We cannot afford to keep such a weak leader in place. Look, today while we were celebrating the outcome of last night's debate, Porter Goss, the newly appointed head of the Uber Intelligence Agency reneged on his promise of bi-partisanship made to the Senate during his confirmation hearings. Goss appointed 4 Rep. political hacks to key positions in his agency. Daschle had his hands tied during the confirmation hearings because of his desperate re-election battle. We Dems end up once again like Charlie Brown when Lucy pulls the football away at the last minute.

And even if the Senate goes Democrat, Daschle still is coming to his job from a position of weakness as his constiuency will not change their basic conservative orientation. We need a leader in the Senate. Not someone hobbled like Daschle. And sooner rather than later.
