All week Mr de Villepin has been in constant touch with Colin Powell, his opposite number at the State Department. He has been the more forthright in his comments and was the first to call for Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide to step down. In unmistakeable diplomatic language he said Mr Aristide bore a heavy responsibility for the crisis and should draw the appropriate conclusions to end it.
Mr Powell quickly followed suit, in a more cautious tone. However, French diplomats accept Washington has to tread more carefully in an election year regarding any new foreign entanglement, not least in its Caribbean backyard. The US was also the principal backer of Mr Aristide's rise to power and is reluctant to be seen overtly pressing for the overthrow of a democratically elected leader.
That this Franco-American co-operation is visible at a time when German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder is in Washington for the first time after the fall-out over Iraq is an added satisfaction for French diplomats who maintain that France was never the disloyal ally depicted by the neo-conservatives.
LOL, That's precious. Almost priceless. Must make the Freeper Blood Boil.
