Abortion as a Woman's Right

There have been diaries today by JMS and Scott concerning abortion. Scott brings up the intriguing "West Wing"-style compromise: Universal Healthcare for tougher controls on abortion.

I must say, as I said in his diary, that I am willing to discuss that deal. For you see, I have never seen abortion as a woman's right. It is not a right akin to free speech rights and voting rights. I believe abortion must remain an option available to women in their first trimester if for whatever reason they cannot have a baby and adoption is not an option. Further, abortion needs to remain a medical option in the later stages of pregnancy so that a mother's life can be protected.

I am an anti-abortion pro-choice Democrat. I am not a right wing FReeper or troll and I think my length of presence on this site establishes that.

But I want to hear a calm discussion of this. Convince me otherwise, why is it a right?
